HarrisonPhil Harrison started 2006 as the new president of Sony Computer Entertainment's Worldwide Studios. Just after almost one year of manning the post, Harrison became an instant household name (to hardcore gamers at least). He is known to make comments here and there, sometimes discussing things that truly matter.

Harrison recently talked about the past year and what lies in 2007 for Sony. The good thing about him is that he never denied that Sony indeed had a shaky year. Choosing to look at the brighter side of things, the official mentioned that 2007 is just around the corner and suggested that the war being fought on hardware domain now moves to software and content.

Furthermore, he insisted that users are becoming more and more important to companies. Aside from being consumers, these same people are now being looked at for ideas and suggestions on how to improve the gaming industry. According to Harrison:

The video-game business for the past 20 years was about shipping closed experiences. Somebody made a game. Gamers bought it. They played it. End of story. Next year you're going to see user-created experiences in a number of interesting ways on PlayStation 3.

Aside from that paradigm shift, the official is also suggesting an industry makeover. The comment was made after discussing PS2 title Bully (the game was created by Rockstar and is about a boy and a troubled prep school). Harrison lamented:

I fervently believe that the biggest challenge we face is that our industry is referred to as 'video games,' and games are supposed to be fun. Games should deal with fear, should deal with comedy and with death. They should deal with peril, with drug offenses. I'm not sure how we can escape when the leading brand is called PlayStation.

Most importantly, Harrison reiterated that they are bringing back PSP game Loco Roco "in a couple of new ways with some new friends in the future." Finally, he couldn't help but brag in the end about their console's hardware prowess. As we all know, the PS3 is an advance technology given its controller, multiple processors and constant firmware upgrades. "Nobody will ever use 100 percent of its capability."

$ony is the only company that has ever thought "if we make something somebody will buy it." What? Now they say they will listen to what gamers want? They should have done that before coming up with the PS3. Microsoft has always done this as they must exceed the competition to stay sucessful. It's funny how long it took $ony to realize they just can't do whatever they want and stay sucessful. Too little too late $ony!

Thats the funniest thing I've ever heard, Microsoft listens. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
If there is a company that is more arrogant than Sony that is micro$oft.

Why don't you state some examples instead of thinking you're a f*cking comedian. MS added 1080p support, a HD-DVD add on, homebrew support, is constantly adding support for backward compatibility, and is even redesigning the XBOX 360 controller. They issue firmware updates regularly with USEFUL features. $ony has a well established track record of not supporting their products well and not adding promised features either on time or at all.

 » uhh... my head hurts

All those things you listed that Microsoft added for gamers (even though the HD-DVD cant be used for games) are all things Sony has had in the PS3 from day one... So im really trying to figure out what point your trying to prove....

With the PS3 coming out a year late of course it comes with things the XBOX 360 did not. Microsoft has added pretty much everything the PS3 came out with but is still cheaper, except the HD-DVD. Backward compatibility on the PS3 is a joke as the playstation 2 plays games with better graphics. Yeah the XBOX 360 can't play every game but they look much better and play all the best games. $ony's firmware updates so far really haven't improved anything important. Playbots (PS3 freaks) have been complaining to $ony about downscaling resolutions to 480p on certain TVs but where's $ony's solution? What about sixaxis interference issues? Where's the descent games I know you are asking for? The XBOX 360's launch games were better than the PS3s a year ago. Phil here just announced they need to START listening to what gamers want. That's the point why is it so hard to understand?

"Nobody will ever use 100 percent of its capability" ...is that thanks to the constant firmware upgrades?

That's actually true nobody will ever use 100 percent of it's capability. $ony won't let you because they're lazy and greedy. Just look at the PSP, it can do a lot thanks to homebrew. If people relied on $ony's support, the thing can't do much except give you reasons to buy more $ony products! Buy a PS3 to play PS1 games. Buy a location free transmitter to watch TV on the PSP. Buy a camera to take crappy pictures and 15 second movies. I hope consumers wise up someday...

Ughh......Common non-sense...You-Are-Annoyin

i,m sure that your xbox360 is so fun and addictive that you spend your entire time in the ps3 forums.

well....too bad you simply throw [false information].

1)xbox360 in 2years time....mark my words.....[will not be able to play 1080P movies because of the HDCP protocol....and you need HDMI port that is HDCP compliant to do that]...and dont reply before you go and understand what HDCP is..

2)xbox360 wont play games at 1080p because TV manufacturers will [NOT SUPPORT VGA ANYMORE]...

3)the HDCP protocol was requested by the movie studios....and HDMI was the result of this request....so HDCP is coming wether consumers love it or not.

4)microsoft must make an HDMI adapter that is HDCP compliant..[though i dont know how it can happen]...so it can play movies and games at 1080p......which means not only it will be more confusing for the consumers...but it also means that .[you have to pay for another adapter $$$$]...and will make the xbox360 even more bulky and [expensive] than it is.

5)the ps3 is the cheapest system.....costing 820$ and retailing for a low-as 500$ if we add the cost of HDMI cable..

500$+27$[HDMI cable]=527$ total cost

the xbox360 costing just 360$ and retails for 400$..[i,m not counting the core....since its nothing without HDD..whats XBL worth if you dont have HDD....???]

400$+50$[XBL subscription]+HDdvd addon 200$+and HDMI adapter (more$$) + [HDMI cables] 27$

result=677$+ [the price of the future adapter.]

with this...we have finished the price issue....be happy...by buying a 360...you are actually giving microsoft money....that company surely [LISTENS] to you
-----------
Do not hate me....plz...its not my fault....what can i do..???...microsoft is a small company ya know.....they cant give you everything in one system....they have to make profit from every unit sold....they need the money....dont blame them for an [incomplete system].. :)

oh..well...i wish i could help you...but........Goddes...help them... :D

 » Don't hate me because I'm smart

True, my XBOX 360 is fun and addictive but I also have a PSP so I read this on the PSP section. You're making a lot of assumptions here. HDMI is a pathetic attempt by movie studios at keeping movies from being copied by downgrading the picture to 480 if HDMI is not supported. Many HD tvs (especially LCD and plasma) have VGA in and why would they stop supporting it? Oh yeah you said so. The XBOX's VGA output will continue to support 1080p with movies since no studios have implemented the copy protection BS and have not announced they will. The XBOX's HD-DVD add on is one of the first available players, and making the movie not compatible with HD because of copy protection would be stupid for the movie studios and hurt sales. This will not happen for a long time if at all. If MS needs to make a HDMI adaptor then what's the big f*cking deal? Also how many people have a tv that supports 1080p and of those how many can tell the difference from 1080i? The PS3's HDMI cable is $60 more and not included anyway. I would not buy the HD-DVD add on and would rather get a stand alone player when they are cheaper. I have a choice, and if you buy the add on for the XBOX you get a second drive to reduce wear and tear on the internal one. Your argument XBOX is more expensive is pathetic as the PS3 costs more in nearly any configuration. If you buy a core XBOX 360 system and decide you want to add HDD, HD-DVD, wireless controller, etc. yeah it costs more but if you do that you're an idiot. You think by $ony taking a loss on the PS3 sale they're doing you a favor? They just have to make up that money somehow so you're still paying for it. I knew all what you said (everything that's true anyway) and you are proving nothing. I don't hate you, I just feel sorry for you with your brainwashed $ony superiority complex.

 » jeeze

really, if you really wanted a true next gen entertainment experience, you wouldn't buy a game system to give it to you. you would buy stand alone unit, which will last longer, have more features, and give you a better over all experience. microsoft knows this so they give you a choice.

   Re: ContrAss - 2006-12-19
 » christ...

not this again about "choice". Do you understand what choice means? Choice means options for you, money for them. Who the ***** is greedy then? And for your information, wireless isn't so wireless when the option is 100 bucks more. AND i can't understand why they would make a base sku without a hard drive when that was their shiznit for the original xbox. Oh yeah...20 gigs for 100 bucks. I forgot. Next they will release a 80 gig hard drive for 100 bucks, and give you the option to buy the 200 for a mighty 80 dollars :) Go team Microsoft!

» i hope everyone eats their words soon

the evolution of graphics for a console is fast. We all can compare Halo 1 to Halo 2 but i won't for this, because well...i want to use a game an xbot probably never knew.

Suikoden III has got to be one of my favorite games on the PS2, or any console for that matter. The game blew my mind with its fantastic art style and direction. The levels were vibrant and vast and the huge cast of characters you're able to obtain was down right awesome--edge by the way...the best!. Anyways, the game wasn't so much about graphics, it was the almost too awesomely awesome story told that made it stand out above the rest.

Point is, Suikoden III looks like ass now, but at it's time it was beautiful and fun. If i can get that same expirence on the PS3, in 2007, then I most certainly hope Sony proves all the haters wrong.

By the way, i got off topic and i forgot my point. whatever, i just had to write about that game anyways.
