PS3 2.10 firmware update - Image 1

Heads up! Sony UK has announced that the next PlayStation 3 firmware update could be coming in tomorrow, a month after the last version came out. Version 2.10 will have a couple of new features, including the new Voice Changer function and DivX support.

For this new firmware update, you'll need 120 MB of free space on your unit. For now it seems we won't see the system go BD-Live yet, but the system is going up to Blu-Ray Profile v1.1 allowing picture-in-picture interactivity for certain Blu-ray discs.

Also, according to the Blu-ray website, the new Voice Changer function will be able to support in-game chat. Hopefully this indicates progress towards in-game access to the XMB.

Here are the reported updates from the UK PlayStation site:

Voice Changer feature:
  • You can change the tone of a voice that is input from an audio device such as a microphone. High and low-pitched tones can each be adjusted to five preset levels. You can vary the tone when using voice / video chat under Friends.

Music

  • You can now select [Type 3] as an option under Settings > [Music Settings] > [Bitmapping]. This bitmapping process was developed specifically for the PS3 system to enhance audio playback.

Video

  • DivX and VC-1 (WMV) have been added to the types of files that can be played.
  • Blu-ray Disc Profile 1.1 is now supported.
  • [BD Data Utility] has been added.

Update:

The page that made the firmware update announcement seems to have been been pulled out from the Sony UK website, as well as it's corresponding entry on the Spanish Playstation website, so there is a possibility we won't be able to see the firmware go live tomorrow.

The website said (before it was pulled down), that "an update to the PS3 system software was released on December 18, 2007." The phrasing in the past-tense suggests that there might have been a slip up - as some people now assume, the page probably wasn't meant to go up until the firmware update "was" made available.

We'll have to wait for news from Sony to confirm what happened and what the status is with the firmware. Hopefully, the info stated in the update was accurate and was just posted prematurely. We'll keep you posted on updates as soon as we get them.

Thanks to Mentality and YaMi_SeNsEi for bringing it to our attention!

 » Finally!

It's gonna be really intresting testing the DivX Function. :)

   Re: Thinker - 2007-12-17
 » Agreed

For me, I have several Video/audio files on my Computer which I would prefer to stream onto the PS3 rather than copy my files. Now, if the PS3 is going to be able to stream WMV files, then I don't have to convert many files. I can stream them directly. Hooray!

...bring on MKV HD support instead, its the year 2007 isn't it ? wasn't divx considered good quality in the 90's ?

WMV video files, do people actually use those ?

Except for random pron downloads...

   Re: CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS - 2007-12-17
 » To ~~

A lot of websites use WMV and give no other choices that the PS3 will support so yeah I am happy to see that I will be able to view them through my PS3's web browser, I hope. One of my favorite websites is Gametrailers.com.

 » YES!

Hopefully it doesn't suck like the 360 version I have the 360 and have data disks of avi container files and it will not read any of them.

 » yikes

whoa. you guys are right indeed! it seems that the page has been removed! or, at least, temporarily re-paged somewhere else, maybe. and we double checked. that really is supposed to be the link.

if you want to double check for yourself, you can see the bluray.com post (we linked to blu-ray's site in the article body). they linked to the same page. and also, the same error. if you check other sites reporting the news, they source the same page too.

strange indeed... thanks for pointing it out, guys!

DivX and WMV support :D Glad to see Sony finally adding more support so we don't have to resort to "work arounds" just to view media.

 » WMV Support!? Yes!

Now I can browse my favorite websites that use WMV format using the PS3 web browser! Now only if we had updated flash support and a copy and paste function in the web browser.

Nah man, every site I checked has the same link, and they all dead, I think this is a slip up, I aint to sure now weather to actually expect this update tomorrow or sometime in the near future, no doubt it is real, but just a wait at hand. Saying that though, I am extremly hopeful at seeing it tomorrow. Who knows....

you guys said:

"The website said (before it was pulled down), that "an update to the PS3 system software was released on December 18, 2007.""

You say it must have been a slip up because it was past tense and probably meant to go up after the FW was released, but did you guys miss something?

Look,

"an update to the PS3 system software was released on December 18, 2007"

Yes it says past tense, "was released on", so yes it is meant to go up after the update goes out... butt... it fully says the date the FW went up!

December 18th, 2007!

Which is tomorrow, so then that little text says that it is supposed to come out tomorrow since in the future they will say it came out on the 18 :P lol.

So it really is comming out tomorrow? Looks that way according to the text.

Only time will tell.

maybe it's just that the voice changer will work in game chat like the game have now... no in game message... that will be the best feature they can do.. anyway let's see if the update go live or if it was just a mistake...

 » [Updated] Ultimate Head-to-Head Grudge Match.

(Just for your reference) If a game is released on PS3 about one year later than on X360, almost no one buys the PS3 version because the (PS3) game is ancient then (1 year is considered extremely old in gaming world); moreover, millions of people already own the same game for PC or X360 (they obviously don’t buy again); Therefore, PS3 versions of Bioshock and some other games are total ‘jokes’ (no one buys these ancient games).

[ Top X360 Exclusive Games ]
* Gears of War (90 points): Graphics! All you do is hide-shoot-hide-shoot-hide-shoot-(repeat this 9999 times more)
* BioShock (85 pts): Graphics & atmosphere! The entire game is only 10 hours long; no big reasons to replay
* Project Gotham Racing 4 (75 pts)
* Forza Motorsport 2 (70 pts): All those various customization is only for lifeless idi+ts
* Halo 3 (80 pts): It has almost same gameplay as the 3 year old Halo 2. Terrible and highly pixelated graphics in close proximity
* Burnout Revenge (70 pts): At first sight it looks fantastic, but once you played it for 1 hour then it gets extremely boring
* Dead or Alive 4 (50 pts)
* Mass Effect (40 pts): Its graphics is even much worse than the 2 year old game, Perfect Dark Zero; Horrible frame rate very frequently; the gun fight is terrible and laughable (just compare with any shooter game)
* Command & Conquer 3 (45 pts)
* Eternal Sonata (20 pts): ROFL
* Saints Row + Prey + Quake 4 (this ‘Joke Value Pack’ includes 3 games: 10+10+10=30 pts): Terrible frame rate all the time (LMAO) and X360 versions have bland graphics (ROFL); the multiplays are jokes, right? (LOL)
* Dead Rising (70 pts)
* Lost Planet (70 pts): If only a few things were right, this deserves 90 pts
* Crackdown (20 pts): Crap down!
* Blue Dragon (90 pts if your mental maturity is ten): or 20pts

[ Top PS3-Lonely (Only) Games ]
* Warhawk (90 pts): Technologically and graphically mind-blowing, because the map is ridiculously huge, ground combat is terrible, but the air combat is groundbreaking; this is the real bomb so far, a lot of X360 fanbots I know are mesmerized by this game
* SingStar (20 pts): Ok, this new PS3 release is lame! The graphics is suitable for PS2 console
* Unreal Tournament 3 (45 pts): Terrific graphics with atmospheric layout; balanced map design, weapons and many more; seriously, the soldiers (characters) move around as fast as the hedgehog, Sonic!!!; really, the moving speed (of ground soldiers) is a joke (this takes all the fun); if the developers reduce the walking (running) speed then this is 10 times better than the similar game called Halo 3.
* Uncharted Drake's Fortune (60 pts): Luscious graphics! but the entire game’s 5 hours long; the gunplay is weak as hell; brain-dead enemies (LOL)
* MotorStorm (80 pts): Top-notch graphics and technological achievement! The maps are too big (if the maps are smaller, then we can see more car versus car actions – this is MotorStorm’s strongest point)
* Heavenly Sword (50 pts): Gorgeous graphics! but the combat sucks a+s; and the whole game’s 6 hours long (and repetitive); no reasons to play again
* Resistance Fall of Man (70 pts): when you look at things closely they are very ugly and highly pixelated; average graphics in general! mindless run & gun garbage
* Ratchet & Clank Future (fantastic! 90pts, if you’re mentally 10 year old): or 30 pts
* Ninja Gaiden Sigma (30 pts): Same as Ninja Gaiden Black (years old!!!)
* Folklore (15 pts)
* Lair (10 pts): LMAO

 » EA new Shooter

Mean while the update downloads, i have received an e-mail from EA in which its an invitation to test out a new shooter game in LA; in which its just 20 min from where i live.

Here is what the e-mail says:

How would you like to visit Electronic Arts and play a new shooter game that is still in development?

Electronic Arts will be conducting focus groups at our offices in Los Angeles on Thursday, December 20th and Friday, December 21st. We'd like to invite you to participate!

The session will last approximately two and a half hours, and you will get to play a new, unreleased shooter title. You will also receive a free EA game just for coming!

There are four available sessions:

Thursday, December 20th
1) 5:00pm-7:30pm
2) 8:00pm-10:30pm

Friday, December 21st
3) 5:00pm-7:30pm
4) 8:00pm-10:30pm

Oh boy! Hopefully I get to qualify for this event.

Yes Hurray !

the update has finished downloading and the update features are

A voice changing feature has been added to enable changing of your voice pitch during chat. Your can adjust this setting under [settings] > [Accessory Setting] > [Voice Changer].

DivX and VC-1 (WMV) have been added as codecs that can be played under [Video].

You can now select [Type 3] under [Bitmapping] in [Settings]> [Music Settings].

It works...but totally screwed up...even when changing the FourCC code. The ID tag is screwed up. I put in a 24 minute XviD file and the time shows up as 5 seconds on the PS3 and only plays for 5 seconds...haven't tried a DivX file yet.

I downloaded WMV from Gametrailers.com and YES, you can save it to the hard drive and play it on PS3 the PS3!

I checked all my sources and all of them said the 18th. And, here we are. Due to the high level of complaints, we can expect another update soon. Not a rumour, just logical.

 » Compatibility

A few of my DivX files play now - but only the ones that played in the 360 with their DivX update.
Quality is quite good though - and the PS3 can skip through DivX files MUCH faster than 360.

Only thing I hate so far is the fact that the PS3 has to read EVERY DivX file on a DVD before you can play a file.
