PS3 - Image 1

Good news, Sony PlayStation 3 owners! The highly-anticipated firmware update that is version 2.01 is now finally available for download. So go ahead and turn on your massive black machines of next-gen video game happy, as it's time to get their engines tuned up with this update. Why? Because this one comes with a promise to make things a little easier for all of us.

So what does the update do, exactly? We're not completely sure, but some users report of boons such as the removal of freezing issues when trying to play DVDs on the PS3. There's also the deal about the PlayStation 2 upscaling being restored to its former glory, as well as the fact that they no longer fill out the entire screen (thus removing the nasty overscanning bit).

Please do note, however, that these changes are not yet confirmed, as Sony hasn't quite given us a changelog to go by. But if what they said earlier about this update is true, then it's a much-needed one. Try it out for yourself, however, and see what's changed.

Thanks to David G and pnkrok81 for the tip!

*UPDATE*: Lo and behold, we finally get the changelog to this not-so-mysterious-anymore firmware update for the Sony PlayStation 3. While it doesn't look like anything major has been changed with how it works, there's definitely a lot to celebrate about. Here it is:
  • Stability during playing some PLAYSTATION 3 format software has been improved.
  • Stability of System Software including Internet Browser and Information Board has been improved.
  • Stability of the upscaler for PlayStation 2 format software has been improved. (Playability of PlayStation 2 depends on model)
  • Remote Start] feature is changed to avoid unintended power on.
Improved stability with software and upscaling of PS2 games? A very nice update indeed. So get to downloading, PS3 owners!

 » ok guys...

as usual we make our own changelog...

i won't be able to update until i get off work, hope to read some insights later about what this new firmware actually gives us.

i think it's about time for me to get Assassins Creed now and hope that all the issues that i keep on reading wouldn't crop up.

Right after the update, Assassin's Creed froze(music and sound effects and camera movement works) the character, then my ps3 went blank. Beeped and rebooted but I couldn't play anything (games, dvd's, blu ray for about half an hour. I think Sony needs to make sure their PS3 games work before updating the ps3 for ps2. I just got Assassin's today and this is the fourth time it froze today. WTF?

BTW Thanks Sony for the new Socom 3/C.A. map pack and the updates for that. Those were desperately needed. NO MORE GLITCHERS!!!

This isn't a 0.1 update it's a 0.01 which typically doesn't add any features except improved stability.

Uh Its not Sony that made that game.. Its ubisoft and those other people.
Assassin froze the same way for me (which is not really suprising for me anymore), except idk where you get the "I cant play any games or blu-rays for a half an hour" part (thats kinda random.. never heard that one b4 lol.)

Still dont understand how people are blaming the system, when its the actual games fault that its freezing, So you should really say - Ubisoft should make sure there PS3 games are working right.

Srry if im trying to make a point but to me its kinda like saying a TV show makes the TV bad or somthing.. when its actually the people who made the show's fault.

is this true????

can somebody else confirm this for me??? what really are the bloody problems with Assassins Creed even after 2.01???

Assassins Creed isn't out here yet in Sydney (tomorrow is 1st day) but if that comment above is true i'll just skip the darn thing... no thanks Ubisoft... good gaming experience or not it's just not worth risking my PS3.

» Well im in America Quix

As far as i can see(min you i don't actually have a copy) but there isn't any problems with my games or anything its fine. As for A.C i don't think the bug issue is any need to worry. Although this is what i hear from others but they haven't had a single problem yet, im not either with any of my games.

@MCS you need to update your system i see no point of keeping an old firmware. Your missing out on themes and some good stuff

 » no thanks

I haven't had a single problem with 1.94, so until I don't hear any problems with a 2.xx firmware, I'm staying here thank you!

 » PROBLEMS

When I got the 2.0 update my system worked fine. C.o.D.4 had no issues but since the .01 update it is harder for me to connect to a game. I have also notice I get the controller issues from way back with it locking up and my character spinning or running out of control. I have yet to play A.C. when I do I hope my experience will not be marred by the issues.

 » woo hoo!

After the update to 2.01 I haven't had a freezing issue yet, and Ive been playing for like 3 hours, yay!

And that is with Assassin's Creed. I guess its a toss up of whether you have freezing issues with it on certain firmwares...
