He's a future astrophysicist, a martial artist, a College Degree holder at the age of 11, and he doesn't like video games. Child prodigy Moshe Kai Cavalin graduated with honors from East Los Angeles Community College just last week, and made it known to the world that he thinks video games are "a waste of time."Before you go attacking the kid, hear what he has to say: "I feel it's a waste of time playing video games because it's not helping humanity in any way." Okay, that is definitely flame-bait material, so I'll just have to remind you guys that he's only 11 years old. He may be a college graduate at such a tender age, but that doesn't mean he doesn't stand to learn anything new anymore. He's got his whole future ahead of him, and am sure he'll one day find the time to change his mind about his graduation statement - especially with college comfortably tucked out of his way. Gaming has essentially made technology increase by leaps and bounds. The demand for bigger and better hardware has changed the world. Wasn't it just reported that the Folding@Home project hit the petaflop level due to the PS3? I know that Folding isn't really a game, but looking at that protein and making it move around has to constitute as something right?

Sure, it itself might not be "helping humanity", but it's helped in the same way war does, though with slightly less catastrophic consequences. Very few of humanity's greatest acheivements were made on purpose, most are simply the by-product or something else.
Though I must say, even for an 11 year old, he does sound like a self-righteous little brat to be honest. It's nice he wants to make the world a better place and all, but what goods that if we don't relax and enjoy the world being a better place.

That's an interesting way to put it, I suppose the demand for video games has influenced people to make better technology but that doesn't change the fact that when a person is actually playing them they accomplish nothing. Much is the same with many forms of entertainment, not just video games.

He is right in an aspect of it and wrong in another.
He may be right in the way that it really doesn't help humanity to sit at home on your @SS all day and play video games when you could be going out playing a sport or doing something more constructive than leveling up your Paladin.
The other aspect that he is wrong is that video games help with emotional baggage that people carry around all day, every day. Much like movies, tv shows, and books, you sometimes just need an escape from reality just to deal with the stress of everyday life.

I kind of partially agree with him, but you can say that about a lot of things, when i eat a a bag of sweets, it's not helping humanity, but it tastes nice.
If you play a game online, you might meet people, talk to them and 'help humanity' somehow that way.
To be honest i think he's just a naive little kid, who's head is to big for his body.
I think i see a Bruce Lee portrait behind him too, he's probably been fed all the stuff about inner peace and 'being at one with yourself'.
Oh and by the way WHO CARES WHAT HE SAYS? he's just a random kid, i'm sure there are plenty of 11 year old college graduates out there just as smart as him, if not smarter, who have a different opinion.
I can't believe i just wasted my time writing all this...

What makes playing a sport more helpful to humanity than playing a video game? Let me ask everyone this. Can you tell me of ANYONE out there that never does anything that anyone could construe as a "waste of time"? What is the definition of "wasting time"? According to this kid, it's anything that doesn't help humanity. That just sounds like the politically correct response, and I would expect more than that from a genius. Seriously, if you aren't "helping humanity" by doing something, all of a sudden it's not worth doing? Some people actually don't have the means to do things like go to college and take karate classes. That doesn't make them or the things they do worthless. Hopefully he realizes that when he grows up.

As was said in the article, he is only 11 years old.
He's not old enough to vote, in the U.S. at least.
His opinion of anything doesn't really matter until after he hits puberty. And all that really is, is an opinion, no need to make a big deal of it.
BTW, sports in the mainstream give people something to be entertained with, it is more active and is 'supposed' to involve being healthy and living life to the fullest.
My turn to ask you, TranceKuja, how does playing a video game compare to the thousands of people who go to watch sports at ballparks and stadiums?
Heck even the actors/actresses who star in plays/movies.

it is a waste of time, in the true sense of the words.
but is it a bad thing....NO
if we didnt have time to waste we wouldnt be doing it.
its a by product of our need to waste time.
and certain games can keep the mind sharp.
some people read books.
some play games.
some watch DVDs.
thats why its called SPARE TIME.
it may not help humanity but it sure helps us pass boredom.

What do you mean, "how does it compare"? It's pretty much the same thing. You're sitting there watching other humans run around, or you're sitting there watching pixels move around. That was exactly my point, playing a sport is just a way to keep yourself entertained. Just like playing a video game. What it all basically comes down to is the attitude that "my entertainment is better than your entertainment" and anyone that is even halfway intelligent know such an idea is stupid.

You didn't read my comment, I wasn't comparing both forms of entertainment I was comparing video games to the entertainers.
And at any rate I already agreed with you in my 1st post before you even posted.
I was giving another view on the subject that people may or may not want to look at, but if it offends you that much I'll stop.

It wouldn't offend me. What anyone chooses to do with their time is their choice and no one has a right to take that away/attempt to put them down, making it seem it's not worth doing. Carry on.

» he has a point
if he wasted time playing games, he would not achieve what he has.
most of us might achieve much more in our lives if we would not spend so much time playing games.
during my studies, when i gave up pc gaming i quickly found a lot of spare time for myself. it's like giving up smoking - minutes that you would usually spend going out for a smoke quickly add up, and you discover you have quite a lot of free time for yourself.
i used that extra free time to learn some new things, which in turn helped me to get a decent job. so i kind of agree with the statement that games are a waste of time.
but i don't think games are a total waste of time - they are a great way to relax once in a while.

Obviously games are a waste of time, so are movies, television and chatting on forums.
If you can't realize that games are a waste of time there is something wrong with you.
The thing is, most of us like to have some rest and relaxation in our lives and do not like to constantly be working and over-achieving.
Like everything in life, you need a healthy balance.

Martial arts are a waste of time too. It's not helping humanity in any way. Neither is going to college with adults.
So how do you get through college at age 11 again? Do they just say "wow you got a high test score! Why don't you go ahead of the other kids a couple grades?"
Public school in america is so retarded kids don't want to learn.

» worry about the kid
I don't really care about what the kid said. He's entitled to an opinion despite a lack of information. I'm just a little worried about his life/future. I mean, at 11 he's a junior college grad as well as involved in martial arts? How much time has he spent building meaningful relationships with kids his own age? If most of his time has been spent with older generations, he's not forming the same-age peer bonds that are valuable to the psyches most people, if not everyone.
I hope his parents aren't pushing him to be more than he himself wants. I remember stories on child prodigies going to college a few years back. My teacher found an update on one child and found that he was so unhappy that he dropped out of college as a teen and disowned his mother. I can't help but wonder if we're going to see something similar in this kid's future.

Lol, a community college. And he was simply forced to learn that fast. Most grade schools only teach you so much at once, it's not like the brain has to be on some "level" to learn what he did. Genius my ass.
And gaming isn't a waste of time. Games were created for fun, and having fun and enjoying your life is more important than anything else. This kid probably tried them and sucked such hardcore ***** at them. Probably played for like 2 minutes because he thinks he's the most intelligent being on the earth that he'd instantly adapt or something.

Because part of the aging process below 18 (to my knowledge) involves the brain expanding and developing abilities like logic and what ever else there is that fully grown adults are capable of doing with their brains. I don't remember. Maybe it's in wikipedia. (more info I mean)
My point is, I've played video games since I was 5 or 6 and I still play them today. The difference is that over the years I have become a better player. We're not talking about experience on a single game either. I've had most of the consoles.
Time has allowed my brain to enhance my video game performance.
It is no wonder to me what the kid says. He obviously has had little if not any play time. Lastly, it is nothing more than media candy, it's one of those "oh hey this will make great news" articles. At least 1,000,000 people with an IQ below 120 have said video games are a waste of time. Hell, I knew a redneck who said it once.

The younger a person is, especially kids his age, the easier it is for their brain to take in information. It explains why I go on Generic FPS 12: Part 2 and get an actual challenge from some 10 year old. They adapt so friggin' quickly, it's unreal.

Intelligent but not smart.
Games teach us a great deal about other cultures - it was gaming that inspired my love of Manga, which in turn made me friends in Japan who I'd never have met otherwise.
Gaming fosters friendly competition, provides new ideas and acts as an outlet for writers, artists and software engineers. It also creates jobs and supports the economy.
But then, he's 11 years old, and he clearly understands nothing about social science, economics or the value of friendships forged through shared interests.
Still, if he is a genius, maybe he'll get it in another 6 months ^^

I agree with this statement from Acteon, he's clearly intelligent, but being intelligent isn't being smart, someone already mentioned it, although he's achieved a lot he's probably not going to be very happy due to lack of social skills to develop friends in his age group, sure your able to talk to adults, but that doesn't change the fact that your still a kid, no matter what you do they will always think less of you. As for his statement yes its a waste of time and no I believe it does help humanity, remember when the PS1 was first launched the crime in the US went down significantly, I'd say that's helping humanity.

I will have to disagree on that one.
Please define "video game" and what sort of video games you play. I am sure there are many upon many video games thats been made to help kids learn in an interesting/interactive way, it is true a picture will be easier to remember than just plain words. And I am pretty sure most of you have been touched and learnt more about life through out the stories from these games, its not like ALL games are bad and meaningless. Actually, I'll take that back, even meaningless games does have purpose and a good purpose, which is too release tension and pressure for the big bad world out there for aldults so they are able to cope and move on in some situations. Its funny how he does martial arts and saying this at the sametime, sure he can say its healthy now, I am sure he will change his mind after he breaks his arm.

If I met him I would smack him in he head as he's the kind of kid that deserves it. What a smartarse.
I bet he also doesnt like anything to do with sex. How can you complain about something you have never experienced?
I bet he'll be the next 40 year old virgin.

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY! Also I read on a different site that he also wants to get into scuba diving. How does that help humanity? Doesn't he seem to want to be an astrophysicist, not a marine biologist? lol

I went to a community college as a child too...
Anyways, most people aren't trying to help humanity in their daily lives, but they are trying to have fun. If he wants to be a boring guy all his life fine, I'm here to have fun yo.

» Genius?
What is a genius? I'm sure this kid could lecture me on Astrophysics all day, and kick my 20-year-old @ss with his crazy Bruce Lee skillz, but I could just as easily talk about Shakespeare and the Romantic poets all day long, and put me on a football field (English football) with him and I'd have him all over the place. I know he's 11, and it is impressive that he's got a College degree, but that's ALL he's a 'prodigy' for.
He'll have hardly any friends, no hobbies and a boring life. I play videogames, and have done since I was very young, and while some games are there simply for a quick blast (fighting games, racing games), there are games that do actually qualify, for me, as a proper means of entertainment. For instance, Final Fantasy VII has at least as good a story as anything I've read, and the strategy that goes into playing it well (as well as the likes of C&C) do actually contribute to intellectual skills. Also, I play guitar. I'm not in a band, and I do not sell my music; it is just a pastime. But do I think I'm wasting my time? Absolutely not. I think this kid better realise, quickly, that hobbies are not a total waste of time, because without them we'd go insane.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to play PES.

» Agree with above
Video games teach us a lot about culture and other things, peak interest in other areas. And much more.
The kid clearly isn't as smart as his status makes him out to be, to say video games are a waste of time is to say films, music, theatre, paintballing, and anything else recreational for that matter is a waste of time.
Gaming is another form of entertainment, although it does overlap into other things like community (Home/LBP), intellect (puzzles), culture/history (A/C, CoD).
All these things are a part of life that inspire creativity. As a university student myself, of Computer Science & Electronic Engineering, I feel we need things like games, music and all other things I mentioned, plus more in order to relax. THe workload can become quite stressful and without a way to "wind down" people wouldn't perform as well as they could.
That being said, without the creative inspiration of games and the like our intellect and academic studies would mean nothing because we wouldn't be able to apply a creative mind in order to produce something new and original.
As a final note, how much of his childhood has this kid lost to that? And how much will he REALLY have "achieved" by the time he reaches the age I will be when I finish my university degree next year ready to go see the world.

» Agree!
Yeah, I completely agree with you there mate. Get his mommy and daddy away from him, put a PS3 or PSP in front of him for a few hour and lets see what really happens! Plus the majority of this so called "prodigy kids" are very narrow minded and only see things one way and will not get de-railed no matter how right or wrong they are!
