Over on the Ben Heck modding forums, there's a new mod that looks quite good, and looks to be functional as well. A poster by the name of RDC has taken the innards of an Xbox 360 controller and placed it within the shell of a DualShock 3 controller. Here's the text from RDC's forum post: This mod is done with the PS3 board (original version) stripped of almost all of it's parts and the controllers daughter board kept intact (mostly) and the CL board cut to about the size of the battery in a PS3 controller. Rumble is in there and the mini USB connector/cable becomes the controller cable. The only thing I left out was the headset connector, which I'll probably add on the next one I make up. Also the L2/R2 isn't analog for the Triggers. That's because of the way the Sony daughter board is and something I also hope to get resolved with future versions. This reminds us, quite fondly we might add, of the PS3 controller placed into an Xbox 360 shell. Feel free to check out the forum post linked below for additional information and discussion on what RDC did. Related Article: |

does your controller get dirty like apple keyboards and such ... I don't mean if you don't wash your hands or anything - just in general. Serious question.

honestly,it does (though i clean it often cuz it was an expensive import).. like if i crab it after eating without washing hands first ect ect.. that kind of thing.
but its gunna get dirty either way do to natural oils on your skin..
best way is to clean it often with a cloth of some sort.

Why do I so often see people write DS3 when they mean PS3?. I don't get it, is it a joke?

» There's something SONY could learn from this picture.
....and that is the color contrast of the buttons are much better (apparent) than the current design used. I'm not sure I like it, but there is something to be learnt from this picture alone.

if I knew for a quality mod to replace the buttons on a ps3 controller for colored clear ones I would do it for a laugh...
I also miss that my launch 60 gig ps3 came with a semi-transparent controller - all my purchased controllers since then are opaque. Boo! But it's small potatoes - but still, if I break that controller I'm putting the casing on another one.

thought changing the button colour could already be done. I've seen modded PSP's done this way, even ones with LED's under the buttons.

hopefully this mod would also make the PS3 controllers not have the heft of a cheap-a$$ crackerjack toy made for midgets with abnormally small hands.

PS2 shape was better and PS1 (digital) controller had the best interior.

» Awesome stuff
This is awesome news, especially for street fighter fans (or at least the ones I know). The PS controller always felt better to me for fighting games (not so much for shooters). I played both the ps2 and the xbox versions of sf third strike, and man did I hate using the xbox controller. The 360 controller was somewhat better with the shoulder buttons, but it still didn't feel quite right. It's probably because the transition from snes to psx controls wasn't very dramatic. But anyway, it's always awesome to learn about mods like this.

» I would love this
I have both 360 & PS3 and would *LOVE* to be able to use the PS3 controller on the 360. Although it would need to still be wireless.
I'm wondering: is this mod really the easiest way to go? --Wouldn't it be easier to just convert the controller pulses from the PS3 controller to a wireless USB receiver? (I'm no controller-engineer, but I would have to think that squeezing the oversized 360 innards into a trim PS3 controller is more difficult.

» won't work
Because the SIXAXIS/DS3 is a bluetooth controller and the 360 doesn't support bluetooth.
Whether or not the internal wireless properties of a 360 controller can be put into the casing is a different matter.

now mikey lets not start this argument. we all know that its a nice, and comfortable controller. as a matter of fact, i played "i am legend" on bluray for like 2 hours straight and my thumbs are fine. didnt even need to touch the controller. no, but seriously its a well known fact that the ps3 is a bluray player that can play a few games here and there, thats why they dont need a fancy controller with force feedback or a new design after 20 years. i like how the biggest change with the controller has been the "evolution" of the thumbstick and dualshock. yet its a step back when you take away force feedback for some sixaxis bs that isnt even accurate. can you say kirby tilt-n-tumble? cause in japanese its pronounced "nintendo did it first and learned their lesson." the 360 controller isnt perfect but there are so many things that have evolved from the first god-awful xbox controller, it still isnt perfect but it's getting there. yet with these consoles and their proprietary next-gen-mediocre-at-best controllers, we need a company like sega to slap ms and sony across the jaw and teach them how to make a controller thats comfortable and versatile, yet upgradeable and inginuitive. i have tried controllers from the 2600 and colecovision to the ps3/wii/360 and the dreamcast and saturn controllers are the only ones that i have ever found to be nearly perfect and unique. one controller doesnt fit all, its common sense, thats why saturn, rip, had its regular 6 button 2 shoulder dpad for some games, and the 3d controller for others (bet you dont remember that). even nintendo understands that. the dreamcast evolved the 3d controller idea, which seemed to be the logical format for most newer games, and threw in a screen/memcard and a rumble pack. a screen on a controller, now thats something that can make a game more interesting. pick plays in sports games secretly, track stats, see live!vision players, have a text convo with someone between levels or during loading screens, display currently playing music tracks.....the possiblities are endless. wouldnt it be nice to have something like that? why not invest in something that adds to the overall experience instead of picking the safe route and going with what's always worked ok? its 2008, and aside from wireless for all, theres nothin to brag about on the aesthetic side of controllers, except nintendo who takes risks, cant mess with that. as weird as their controllers are, they seem to think things through before they unmold a single piece of plastic.

"yet its a step back when you take away force feedback for some sixaxis bs that isnt even accurate"
There is a reason why the DualShock 3 was not sold with the PS3 when it was launched and was replaced by the SIXAXIS. This reason was a lawsuit between Sony and Immersion, who designed the rumble feature in the previous DualShock controllers.
Whilst it was going on, Sony were prohibited from selling the DualShock 3. Once the lawsuit had been settled, Sony were able to go into production to mass produce the controller, which they launched after the existing stock of SIXAXIS in different regions had been sold.

» Street Fighter on 360
This would be great for someone who buys Street Fighter games for 360. The d-pad on the 360 controller is terrible for fighting games. Anyone with a 360, download the SFII demo and try playing with the d-pad.

» The 360 D-Pad is bad for everything.
Navigating through the Dashboard on 360 sucks when using the D-Pad, it is way way too easy to press up or down when you are trying to press left or right.

How about PS3 controller with PSP style buttons.
(PSP has glass like buttons which would look really flashy on a PS3 controller).
