I have played many RPGs of each kind; indeed, RPGs constitute my favorite genre in gaming overall.
I enjoy the grand scale and epic feel that many JRPGs seem to have; predestined the hero may be to save the world, but that doesn't make piecing together his weakness and/or collecting artifacts for attacking the weakness or something similar any less fun for the final battle.
However, the freedom to simply enjoy the game itself, freed from the story is what I particularly enjoy about the WRPGs. Especially The Elder Scrolls games, where they of course have the epic main storyline, there is also the freedom to simply go off and do what you like, and have fun doing it. Most JRPGs don't really facilitate that type of gameplay.
So in the end, it's really just a matter of opinion: what do you like more: destined hero of legend, or killing all the NPCs you can? ;)
Hooray to tentacruel!!!
woot!
Also, I like the improvised Tifa picture :P
You want another iconic bad guy? Make a head crab. YEAH!!! HEADCRABS!!!
OMG, I'm acting like such a moron. QJ, please delete my obnoxious post.
Because headcrabs are in an FPS not a RPG....and that is not supposed to be Tifa...
Anyways, I agree with Mike...both "genres" of RPG have their good and bad spots, but both can be enjoyed wholeheartedley....unless you REALLY hate one type of story telling...
iamback... Its not Tifa... its Rinoa... T.T
Ouch. Feel free to label me an RPG noob.
BTW, to shatterdome, thanks for not flaming me into oblivion ;P
However, here's my comeback: you say that headcrabs have nothing to do with an RPG... Well, you can shoot them down with the RPG, so that's my stand. As for Rinoa... whoops, I guess I'm not as aquainted with RPGs as I'd like to be.
I'm more of a retro gamer. Seriously.
I started with FF7 but played every snes games on emu after that. Still, I never got into american RPGs, they don't seems to have any kind of story (like the elder scrolls games, wich really represent the american RPGs) and they seem to forget to be artistic. It's generally crude, just trying to remake another "real" environment without any kind of art style. Also, they seem to be more action than RPG without any strategic values. Anyway, I suppose it's just not my kind since I lot of people love them.
Anyway, I'm still waiting for eternal sonata on PS3 :'( (the only game I want on the x360... at least I'm gonna have it too on ps3 :D).
personally as long as it's RPG and it's a solid one i don't really care if it's JRPG or WRPG...
Oblivion will always be one of my best experiences in gaming but (i might be the only one with this opinion) i've been more immersed with Final Fantasy games, they have a way of hooking the gamer making everything more personal... i would say that to me JRPGs have more soul in them (for lack of a better definition)... even my PS3 wallpaper is a wicked pic of Tidus and the gang from Final Fantasy X... Lightning will grab that spot sooner or later.
They didn't put the master of all american RPGs.
Hint: Speaking of the "Devil", there shall be a "blizzard" of support for the new version of the RPG, once they make it like the game that makes people go "WoW"... Get the drift?
is like emos
Need to die!
i guess you havent heard of opinions and freedom of choice.
i prefer playing wrpg on pc while jrpg on game console.
matter of fact, wrpg is always straight to the storyline but jrpg has lots of side quests.
sometime side quests tend to make you miss out certain important breakpoint throughout the entire game that makes you rely on walkthrough. it could be hard but overall still fun.
i would say wrpg is easier to play than jrpg.
I personally like JRPGs more, because the whole atmosphere is always better than in WRPGs. In addition, the stories are always better, I think.
Actually very good article QJ, but it's a very personal question, what you prefer.
Don't like jrpg's at all...or well it's rare for me too loke one
when I play an Rpg I expect freedom, I expect too make
my own character and I expect to be able to do what the
Hell I want. Oblivion got me close to that.. it's ozing
artistic style.. jag look att the biggest city.. or the
aylied ruins.
