PlayStation 2 - Image 1Following the NPD Group's report for September, Deutsche Bank analyst Jeetil Patel believes that it may be the beginning of the end for Sony's PlayStation 2. According to the report, software sales for the console fell at a faster rate than was first seen last month.

Patel describes the PS2's decline as inevitable but it's unclear whether the decline (which came sooner than expected) was due to "consumer transition to next-gen software or weak spending patterns amongst the low-end consumer." This may be a wrench in the gears for Sony which plans to commit to the console's 10-year lifespan.

"Needless to say, with tougher comps ahead for PS2 software sales, we think that the PS2 may finally be on its way out of the industry for good" says Patel. Although software sales may be down it remains that the PS2 console continues to sell, and continues to be one of the most played consoles despite the presence of the next-gens.

The decline in software sales may be explained partially by the lack of backwards compatibility for the new PlayStation 3 consoles, which was once explained to also boost PS3 games by limiting the console to only play that format. Perhaps the backlash of the absence of backwards compatibility is that sales for PS2 games suffered.

Patel also observes the underperformance of two of Electronic Arts' franchises: NCAA 08 (PS3, Xbox 360, PS2) and Madden 08 (PC, Xbox 360, PS2, PS3, PSP, Nintendo Wii, and DS). He believes that - in the light of a very "competitive environment" with competition such as Activision, Ubisoft, Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo during the holidays - EA may introduce a price cut in November if the games continue to underperform.

 » Yea...

Im sure HALO 3 had nothing to do with it...

The PS2 is the best console right now, and untill the 360 or PS3 wins this annoying war, it will stay the best console...

   Re: iamback(unregistered) - 2007-10-21
 » a few things:

a. finally, I'm getting closer and closer to buying the PS2. I'm buying the PS2Slim once they cost $20, since that's the only good price for one.

b. You forgot the wii. Right now it's the best. Sure the graphics aren't as good, but as long as you aren't a graphics w h o r e it's the best system out. That and a lack of DVDs...

c. I like all this backwards compatibility bull. I mean, the Wii has backwards compatibility with all the Nintendo systems! Well, except the virtual boy and DS... But, hey, who cared about VB, right? Heck, their backwards compatibility is so good they are compatible with their old RIVAL's systems...

So, please, no BS about "it's to expensive to provide backwards compatibility"... If nintendo wii (1/2 as cheap as its closest competitor, and about 1/3 the price of the ps3) can do and stay under $300, there's no excuse for these "powerful next gen uber systems" to not feature backwards support.

Hey, SONY and MICROSOFT: it's called emulation. Maybe you should stop trying to waste your time preventing it via "firmware updates" and spend more time finding a way to make it profitable. RETARDS!

   Re: Shadownet - 2007-10-21
 » I didn't forget the Wii..

It's not a videogame console, it's a toy....
The Wii doesn't just suck at graphics, it also fails at story, online, and multimedia capabilities (can you play DVDs w/ it yet?).

and half your points are moot, how can emulation be profitable, if you can just dl roms? Sony is doing it (albeit slowly) with downloadable PS games. I'd rather be able to play MGS and FFVIII than Super Mario World 1-64. So the Wii may be ahead now, but the PS3 has more potential. Also, the fact that the PS3 and 360 are expensive means it's necessary to cut a few things out, I just dis agree with that being BC. Also, you fail to adress my main point, that HALO 3 was the reason that the PS2 software sales dropped.

Oh and it's the Wii that should be $20, since it's basically the GC w/ motion sensing...

PlayStation FTW

 » ouch.

fanboy much? lol.

Granted, yes, the wii is more of a gamecube. But nonetheless, is the PS3 not just a Blu Ray player that has a PS2 with advanced graphics?

Remember, the problem with "modern generation" gamers is that to you, "graphics are everything". But think about this: Still to date I have not seen a single boxing game that comes anywhere close to punchout. Why? Because of the fun factor of the game. Sure the graphics on punch out are horrific, but it's better than any "fight night" "ready to rumble" and "rocky" game I've played... Heck, even Tecmo World Wrestling is better than almost all the new "wrestlemania" and "wwe/wwf" games that have come out.

Graphics aren't everything! When Brawl comes out, that'll show you at least a glimpse of the true potential of the wii. Heck, I bet it'll even come close to matching Halo 3 sales, if not even beat it!

BTW, another example of graphics vs gameplay: the original mortal kombat and (heck, I hate to admit it) even Street Fighter 2 are better than most of their graphically updated counterparts. Please, shadownet, don't be a fanboy of Sony or even a fanboy of Graphics... I strive to be honest. Yes, the wii sucks with graphics (I admitted that in my original post), but the wii strives to be a fun system, not a "Hardcore graphics and multimedia are the only things that are important" system. While the other systems clearly beat the wii in power and graphics, I have yet to find a "next gen" game that is actually about fun, and not about , "hey, you suck, noob! learn how to play like a pro, cuz you're worthless!". Well, except flOw. Admittedly, I kinda like that game. But hey, not to sound like a fanboy, but the wii's pointing capabilities would make it perfect for flOw...

Oh boy... I know I'm gonna be in for a hard fight... knowing how almost everyone at pspupdates.qj.net is a sony fanboy... oh boy...

 » ugh...

good job at missing the point again...
I dont care that much about graphics (they ARE important but not the most importnant). I car about story. Name three games on the wii with an amazing story. Can't? Cause the wii is about cheap games with no plot, just gimmicks. I see you compare fighting games, a lot of story there...

No, I'm not a fanboy. I just don't like the Wii. If the 360 wins, it'll still be a win for real gamers, not the non-gamers cropping up this gen.

   Re: iamback(unregistered) - 2007-10-21
 » you have a point

yes, you're right. i can't think of many games with actual story lines. However, that's because of two things:

a. I don't have any games yet. lol. my wii is still in some foreign country getting a wii key installed (I was lucky enough to have a db2 model, which requires some relatively advanced modding: something I'll leave to an experienced person). So, even if there are games with great plots, I don't know of any. However, I dunno... I think I heard the new Zelda had a great story. But I can't say for sure. I just want to point out that I think Nintendo's Ocarina of Time has (had?) the number one pre-order rate in the history of games (I think Halo 3 beat it, though). SO that's probably saying something. But yes, i know, it was for an older system.

b. Maybe we just have to give it some time? I mean look how long it took Resident Evil 4 to reach the gamecube- about 5 years after GC came out, it finally received one of the most acclaimed games of all time. So, maybe we just need to wait, and the wii will get "an uber cool game"... heh heh.

c. If I'm a fanboy of anything, it's the PC... Seriously, it just can't lose! I mean, hey, literally "anything you can do, I can do better!" Wiimotes? pfft... it'll just steal wiimotes via bluetooth drivers! What? the ps3 has superior graphics? Ok, I'll just upgrade to quad-video card configuration! Got blue ray? Fine, I'll just pop in a blu ray BURNER! Got a modchip? Ha! I'll just download a crack! See, it's good to be a PC fanboy! Finally, my favorite: oh, you've got 1080i? How cute! My PC can connect to whatever you can... but can your console connect to my monitor? Precisely.

BTW, the whole PC thing is not aimed at you Shadownet. Just saying in general that the PC is the true master of games. it's literally undefeatable (well, unless you talk about XBOX live, and other stuff purposely created to restrict users. But hey, that's a PLUS to PCs... we're not plagued by such stuff. Oh, and if you're gonna mention serial keys... well, that's what hamachi is for! heh heh. undefeatable.. ya...!

No your wrong end point.

If $20 is the only good price for you, than im sorry but you will be waiting another decade for that price, your better off getting a Sega Genesis or the original SNES or 10 bucks off ebay.

PS2 slim will hit for $99, also i suggest you save your money instead of buying BS with it.

Trust me... These things go down in price real fast. I got a dreamcast a few years ago for $8. And I've gotten plenty of PS1s for less than $20...

It sure seems like they'll be expensive forever, but give it another 3 years, and you'll see~

 » if u got money

how much would it cost for a quad-video card configuration i know bluray burner is around $300. thas some serious spending there.

   Re: iamback(unregistered) - 2007-10-22
 » agreed!

Yes, but we were merely comparing power. If cost is an issue (as it was with me) you'd buy a wii. If you want compromised power for a price, you buy a PS3. If you want unparalelled power, you buy an uber-PC.

If you want to be a loser, buy a mac. pwned.

mac comment: agreed...

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-10-23
 » .

If cost is the issue (and not stupidity) you'd get an XBOX 360 arcade for $30 more than a wii. Did I mention it has third party games that aren't ports of the last generation system?

 » curious

i got the 80 gig ps3, hate macs and i still dont know what to make of the wii, never really got into it. bu i get ur point about comparing power, i thought it was over all. (+pricing)

   by JaXeRiR - 2007-10-22
 » Well

some of us here buy the games and consoles OURSELVES! It's not like we all have parents who'd buy anything to us. And I wouldn't even want it to be like that.

We'll see in 15 years... You guys who always got everything for free on a crappy job living with your parents and we, like me and iamback who are on a good job making lots o' money and got a good apartment... We'll see trust me.

:)
