Activision blizzard - Image 1There's no doubt that Activision Blizzard is now big enough to be a serious competitor to EA, and it seems that the new giant is willing to go toe-to-toe even in the annualization aspect of publishing. Don't look now but we may all see a new Call of Duty game every year from here on out.

This was hinted by Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick who said that they'll be publishing a new Call of Duty in 2009. He said they'll do this by "leapfrogging" studios.

The assumption is that Kotick means studios will be alternating between Call of Duty titles from now on. Treyarch is currently finishing up Call of Duty: World at War (PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii, DS), leaving Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PC, PS3, Xbox 360) devs Infinity Ward free to develop the 2009 game.

We have no idea what the setting of the 2009 Call of Duty will be. At this point, this blogger is just figuring out how to squeeze in a new Call of Duty game to the yearly expense list.

 » NUMBER 6!

In my opinion, World At War is going to bite. Yay, MORE WWII action. Can't wait. (Why can't we have a decent WWI title? Or maybe an excellent Vietnam War game?)

BUT... if Infinity Ward does a sequel to COD4 with COD6, then it's going to be fantastic. It would be great if they could incorporate a MAG-type server into it.

 » alternation

If you look Treyarch and Infinity Ward alternate for each Call of Duty so if thats the case World at War will be Treyarch while the one who made Call of Duty 4 Infinity Ward will be making this one which would mean that its most definitely gona be good.

 » Is it just me?

Am I the only one to have noticed that Call of Duty: World at War is not being called Call of Duty 5 at all?

It looks to me like World at War is almost like a spin off (even though it's going back to the games of old) from the Call of Duty series.

I reckon the 2009 game will be Call of Duty 5 and will still be set in modern times. Obviously I could be wrong but it just looks a bit strange not being called Call of Duty 5.

» They should just split into 2 series

let the original Call of Duty stick to the WW2 theme and branch off a modern warfare series as standalone

 » So that must mean

the Romans had a shot at COD 3?

   by xploren - 2008-08-03
 » This early?

Sounds like it's only a spin-off, not an official numbered one.
