PS3, Wii, 360, PS2, Gamecube, Xbox - Image 1Frank and Ben of Arstechnica recently had an online debate regarding the importance of backwards compatibility for this generation of game consoles. Frank played the affirmative while Ben played the negative. Both men raised good points on the matter, citing nice examples to back up their solid arguments.

Frank opened the debate by saying that more than anything else, backwards compatibility is a very big bonus to gamers. He cited the negative press surrounding the PS3's woes regarding the matter. News broke out last week that the European version of the PS3 carries new hardware specs but will have limited compatibility with PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games. Frank said that for the prices that the PS3 commands, Sony ought to dish out more value to the end users.

He said that owners of this generation's consoles who did not have the predecessor to their machine will eventually feel the need to play legacy titles of the old console. He also said that old games help make the long wait for big releases more bearable. He indicated too that backwards compatibility can be beneficial to the economy of the game community, saying "not only does it help to increase the library of a console, but it also helps to push old content for which the sales had long since dried up."

For his part, Ben said that the issue on backwards compatibility is a silly one and should die out in time, citing the time when Team Xbox got a lot of heat when they announced their plans for 360 backward compatibility, but the buzz died down and now, most of the haters don't even want to talk about the subject.

The truth is, Ben says, is that "I buy new consoles to be able to play new games; the ability for that console to play older games is a distant second." He also said that if gamers want to play old games, getting an old system shouldn't cost a lot and isn't really hard to do.

The two men then went on to try to debunk each other's logic, but ultimately everything boiled down to examples set in the premise involving end users.

The debate could have gone on and on, but at the end of the day, we say that the individual gaming habits of gamers will decide it. For our part, we say that backwards compatibility is a very important plus for consoles. Sure, it may not be remotely close to being the be-all and end-all when considering which console to get, but it does sweeten the deal significantly.

In the perspective of a gamer, Frank established a good point when he talked about wanting to play classic games from the console that you never had. What he didn't discuss is what about those of us who did own the old system and are planning to or are already owning the new one?

We say that there's such a thing as games that never really get old for us. There will always be that handful of games that you'll never really be over with no matter how many times you've played through it. There will always be a time for fans when they would want another run with Cloud and the gang. There will always be Final Fantasy VII, fighting game fans who will crave the button-slapping madness of Marvel Versus Capcom 2, heck I even get visions of Dig Dug sometimes! Bottomline, it's virtually impossible not to miss old favorites and for that purpose, backwards compatibility is very handy.

Sure, we can always get the old machine and be perfectly happy playing the old stuff, but it just costs a bit more than most people would assume and it's really a hassle when you think about it. Sure, we can all get refurbished gear and spend a hundred bucks or less, but why spend that money and have to exert effort to go out and buy it if you already have backwards compatibility? That money could gave been better spent on a new game or two. If you get an old system, you'll also end up having to set it up again and find space to accommodate it. Not the case with backwards compatibility.

In the end, the question is why go through all the trouble when you want to play an old game when you can just pop it in to your new system? You decide.

 » YES, dammit!

I have to say I'm really tired of this question being asked.

Yes, we do. I got through 3 ps2's before I gave up replacing them when they broke. I never got the chance to play GT4 or the latest MGS or FF games. I figured I'd wait 'till the PS3 came out to play these. If the PS3's back-compat is broken I'll be waiting until their's either a couple of killer-app games for it or 'till the fix the back compat.

Likewise on my 360, I really want to play Rallisport Challenge 2 and a bunch of other classics and can't.

It's really frustrating that homebrew dudes can get pc's to run old games but those who built the hardware can't.

how do you guys break your ps2s?

I have my first shipment ps2 in my car right now. my car is sometimes parked outside and the weather in the bay area (CA) gets pretty cold. my car doesnt have the smoothest ride either. people sometimes bump it with their knees. and when i pop in a dvd or game.... everything is koo.

i guess im lucky and picked the right ps2. Pick the box in the back next time. that way you know people didnt mess with it in the store.

your stories make it seem like the ps2 is worse than a ford

BC is so important, you can often offset the price of a new console by selling the old one or trading it in, adn provided the new console has BC you can keep all the games, as you don't get much for them on trade ins.

It was only a matter of time after sony announced the bastardized euro and aussie version before the sony *****suckers, sorry I mean fanboys, started backpedeling and saying that BC is not that important.

   by umm (Unregistered) - 2007-02-26
 » oh god

i could care less about BC.... my old system is still there. Maybe its good for the poor ppl who trade whole consoles in for credit towards a new one, but i dont sell the previous version.

And for the record.. Sony got a lot of heat because of crappy Backwards comptaibility mainly because that former head of Sony (kitaraga or someting?) spent an entire YEAR bashing the xbox360 because it wasnt fully BC either because of the problems they had with Nvidia. He kept saying over and over That if youre not fully BC your system is trash. His contant mud slinging was a marketing ploy, to get ppl not to buy 360 because it was supposedly cutting off the older generation. NOW he is eating those words, and peopel are argy because of the big stink from BC that he made, and the PS3 BC is severely lacking.

Again BC is a bonus, but its something i dont even use.... so i dont care.

Hi , heard of the Wii's virtual console? thats had over 1.5 million games downloaded, nothing new, all classic games.

'Nuff said

   Re: Crow (Unregistered) - 2007-02-26
 » Uh...

Yes, I've heard of Wii Virtual Console.

IT SUCKS! XD

They don't even have Zelda OOT yet, or any decent games for that matter. I've had that on my Xbox for over a YEAR. And, I got it on my PSP last MONTH, which, being portable, is inheriently small and I can play it wherever I am. I don't need a TV and that annoying-assed 'wand' thing that's supposed to be 'innovative'. (NOTE TO NINTENDO FANBOYS: 'Innovative' is NOT the same as 'good'. In the case of the Wii, 'Innovative' means 'a P.O.S.')

Oh, and 1.5 million games really isn't that much compared to the console sales numbers that keep getting shoved in my face by you dumbass fanboys.

 » Considering...

...Hmm , well , yeah it has OOT , thanks for pointing out the fact Mario Kart 64 and super mario world ,and kid icarus among other things aren't decent games, at least , in your opinion.

Yopu;ve had OOT on your xbox and psp for over a year? good for you , however Illegals meanns can't really be counted as part of statistic.

No inoovative isn't the same as good , however listeing to biased sony fans that proabbly haven't tried a wiimote , good for you , just odn't come crying back to Me when Sony east Nintendos dust this time around.

Facts are not to be denied , so far at least the Wii far outsells the Ps3.

1.5 million games is a far amount since your just following sony suit becuase they can't afford to make ps3s that won't sell, they try to cu costs and then pretend its not because the Ps3 sucks.

Go stare at video game boobs , thats all most sony fans do anyway , well that and shoot stuff all day.

Umm crow are you smoking crack? VC had better games then xbox arcade the first release. Now VC does have Zelda OoT, many Marios, Donkey Kong County, Gunstar Heros, Kage, Street Fighter II (and I have that for arcade too I like the VC one better), Kid Icarus, Ice Climbers, I can go on obviously but the point is VC just gets better and better and Xbox 360 arcade gets one old game a month maybe if that and usually something stupid.

Nintendo did right and can only go up. 5 million and counting ^^

 » rumors

Theres a rumor going around that they are doing software emulation in order to save cost and to upscale PS2 games as well.

http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=59112

Having the PS2 hardware in the PS3 while its being used limits its access to the PS3 hardware. Its possible that they wanted to provide better upscaling features and the only way to get that done is to do software emulation where they can use the PS3 hardware to the fullest.

The image of FFXII looks incredible and definitly not something off of a PS2.

   Re: Lurker (Unregistered) - 2007-02-26
 » Oh Snap

Sonys #1 fantard is here to save the day. It isnt news that sony was planning software emulation. But they also said that it would be implemented when it was fully working. The PS2 hardware doesnt impact the performance of the PS3, so stop trying to add your fantard spin. And now you all excited about upscaling, after your other fantard post saying Upscaling doesnt look all that better. Man, do you even remember what BS you spew. Its a fact, not rumors, that the PS3 is not going to include PS2 hardware anymore, and its been done only to save costs, nothing else. Becasue we all knew software Emulation was coming on the PS3, but it was supposed to be implemented when the backward compatablitly emulation software actually worked.

I said the Xbox360 upscaling was not impressive at all. I never said Upscaling in general was unimpressive since my Nvidia GPU will do it for me when i watch DVDs and it makes a difference then.

In terms of the Xbox360, using component cables, my TV does a better job at upscaling an image then the 360 on my Sony XBR.

 » are you serious?

Ofcourse we *****ing need backwards compatibility. I still can't believe Sony is following in the footsteps of Microsoft and taking that away from the European gamers.

I'm tired of having to make room for new systems, especially big, ugly ones like xbox. My friend got an xbox360 only to find that he had to keep the giant disgusting thing in his cabinet just to play his games.

 » psp= best bc ever

you can play almost every game perfectly except n64(kinda rubbishy still) and current gen/next gen systems...

idk, i still don't like how i pay money so i can play old classic games that i can freakin dl, in a few seconds...You can even use the 360 controller on your pc..

and most of them had slowdown issues, especially the gba ones.

Though I do have a psp now, I wont do it because it's illegal.

backward compatibility is a waste of time and money microsoft should have never supported it the only game the needed to support was halo 1 and 2 that is it, sony is also wasting their time as all the hit games on ps1 and ps2 is getting a sequal on ps3, nintendo was smart with it and did not have to make any investment as the wii is a more powerful gamecube but like I said backward compatibility is a waste of time and money.

ha lol the ps3 is even bigger than the first xbox what you got to say now playstation fanboys I guess ps3 is going to fail in Japan to the 360 and wii because it is too big lol dumb A** fanboys.

actualy i think they have a different kind of card for reading gamecube games thats ultra small. but anywaz, it depends if u want back compatability or not. some do some dont. Im satisfied with my wiis BC, it works great. HOWEVER, i have ownd all soney systems except the psp and ps3. why? they all crap out on me! my ps2 worked fine or ps2 games untill last summer, but the ps1 ability died out in the first year i had it! even after i got it repaird it stoped in 8 months. The ps2 slim works fine, untill it warms up. Then it wont load the next sceen. The psX i got used, did the same thing. The ps1 with the a/v cable pluggins (the one where its just like dvd players and stuff) was used as well, but the wierd thing was it wont read memory cards, even though they work on my new ps1 which is actualy the very first model i believe. its in mint condition. I hope it stays that way. the only problem i have is that one of my games (thatll load up on my other ps1) wont. its weird. I hate soneys system, but their games are good. Take away the games and u got a BIG peice of ****
