Pure Blackrock - Image 1

If you can remember a previous article about developer outfit Terminal Reality preferring to work first on the PS3 version of any multiplatform game, then here's something that may interest you. A game developer working on racing title Pure expressed his disagreement, saying that Sony's platform is more "specialist." According to Jason Avent of Blackrock Studio:

I don’t know if [starting on PS3 is] easier. I think that because of the way the PS3 is architectured, it’s more specialist. There would be advantages in making it the lead platform so that you do stuff first on PS3, so that you tailor yourself to it. But you have to tailor it to 360 as well in order to get the most out of it.

Avent also said that Blackrock Studio started to work on Microsoft Xbox 360 games before, but they have recently assigned more team members to work on Sony PlayStation 3 games. "We had feature parity in about January and now we have frame rate parity. Effective, there is no lead format," he added, referring to work on the PS3 version of Pure.

Apparently, Blackrock Studios has a peculiar way of making sure that both versions of Pure (PS3, Xbox 360) will be the same (or as good looking) as the other version: the programmers in the team are all competitive, and team members all want to make sure that their work looks good (or even better) as the other team's.

Pretty much an interesting look on how developers go about in making a game. Check this space often for more info.

» He didn't seem to disagree about it being easier

He basically said you can't have a lead platform since you have to optimize for both in the end anyway

This is why Pure will flop and Ghostbusters will end up being a good game.

Rockstar said it's way easier to start on PS3 (what they did for GTA4 since it was supposed to be exclusive at 1st) so I trust them. I mean, one of the thousands involved in the game could have said it's not true, but they didn't.

And anyway, the guy didn't said it was not better to start on PS3, he said you needed to specialize anyway, that's what he said...

It's almost a "thumbs up for PS3 lead platform" statement... He just said he didn't know since he didn't try.

 » Well..

You should also get your facts straight as when asked about the GTA4 launch pushback they stated it was because 360 was the lead platform and was finished, but the PS3 version needed tweaking still and they wanted a simultaneous release....

Also, GTA4 was never going to be exclusive....MS already won that bout long before GTA4 was officially announced...

Well... I don't think "Won" is the right word to use, more like "bought".

Also, WHY does everyone argue about this dumb *****? Just enjoy the games and forget the politics.

Why do we worry about politics? Because this is a NEWS site, you dummy.

Why do YOU come here for?

a poster on the PS3 forums went into great detail as to how and why the PS3 is more difficult to dev. The long and short of it was Sony has to directly support noob and avg. devs.

If a dev. house can't afford to learn the system, then they'll create an inferior product. And, generally release dates are for the platform that'll make them the most $...and right now, that's not the PS3.
