Blockbuster chooses Blu-ray 5:1 - Image 1

Does this mean the format wars are over? Well, for Blockbuster, it seems just that. Associated Press just released a statement that Blockbuster will exclusively carry high-def discs in Blu-ray format in 1,450 of their stores. This decision came from an analysis done in 250 branches where they carried both Blu-ray and HD-DVDs. It was found that more than 70% of the consumers rented out Blu-ray discs over HD-DVD. Blockbuster senior VP of merchandising had this to say:

The consumers are sending us a message. [...] I can't ignore what I'm seeing. When you walk into a store and see all this product available in Blu-ray and there is less available on HD DVD, I think the consumer gets that [more studios are releasing films in Blu-ray].

True enough, most major studios are supporting the Blu-ray. Another factor, of course, would be the release of the PlayStation 3, which gave the Blu-ray format a big push in sales. It's now believed that Blockbuster's decision could be the first step in shifting the balance and will allow other retailers to follow suit.

The North American HD-DVD Promotional Group, however, sees Blockbuster's decision as unfounded. Ken Graffeo thinks that basing their move on the Blu-ray flims' success over the first three months of the year was too short-sighted.

Despite it all, Blockbuster will still keep renting out HD-DVDs in their original 250 locations and online. But as it stands, that's 1,450 stores with exclusive Blu-ray, and 250 offering Blu-ray and HD-DVD. Now do the math.

BLU RAy suXXZ just like PS3, jk, jk, .... I think HDDVD sounds too much like DVD, thats why they're losing

Is this a case of Sorny paying off Blockbuster to only carry blu ray? Maybe they are using their monopoly to strong arm Blockbuster... oh, wait, they aren't MicroSux, it just might be that blu ray is better. ;)

Why the heck do you guys care, you are the consumers, you win. Not them. Besides, if this is a bad idea... it ereminds me of how blockbuster decided not to rent out ds games...major mistake.

   Re: John-Jack (Unregistered) - 2007-06-18

It's nothing like that at all.
Sony have used used the PS3 as a device to get Blu-ray as the main next generation format, thus securing them about 5 years as the main supplier of media. They used US, the gamers, as the cost to do so.
It's sickening.
But I'm *****ing happy that the hypothetical War is over, two disc formats is too much.

You fools are freaking stupid...

I (and 98%) of other 360 users didn't buy the 360 to play movies....we bought it to play games...

HD-DVD VS Blu-ray has nothing to do with videogames....yet somehow you PS3 Fanboys seem to think it does...

It'd be awesome if MS added a blu-ray add-on to the 360, then you fanboys would have nothing on the PS3 and 360 would not only do better games, but movies as well...

I still wouldn't buy it though....and 90% of other 360 users wouldn't either...and ya I know it's not going to happen because it's partly sony's...and really, sony need to hold on to any little advantage they have at this point...

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-06-18
 » .

can any blu ray owners spell care? wtf is "cair?"

Then they make comments about broken XBOXes, when XBOX is a game console, has nothing to do with HD movies really, and they don't have widespread problems with breaking.

I couldn't give a rat's ass about what blockbastard thinks, because I stopped renting from them after they charged me a $6 late fee for one night late and turned it over to a collection agency. Seems like a pro blu ray company to me.

But really, good for you. Now you are guaranteed to be able to rent blu ray movies and play them on your "game console" and then when you forget to return them you can pay some ridiculous late fees you can convieniently pay to a collection agency with no effort on your part. Can you even rent PS3 games at blockbuster yet? The PS3 section is so small it's really hard to find.... Of course you already have the 2 games there so what would be the point?

   Re: Eclipze_ (Unregistered) - 2007-06-18
 » Re:Shatterdome

Actually the 360s blu ray would still be a add on.. we have ours built in right out the box. And by the time the 360 has the blu ray add on the PS3 will have better games dumbas5 8^(_
But i agree that fanboys are over reacting.

Mr Common Sense just because one person cannot spell care doesn't mean they all can't oh my god I spelled care right oh god I did it again .    Re: Eclipze_ (Unregistered) - 2007-06-18
 » Re: Mr Common

Your not seeing the full picture. The 360 is the game console for games only. The PS3 is a multimedia game console...
Its like saying if you buy a HD-DVD and never use it... (since blu ray is built in) its obvious were going to use it. My game console isnt only for games and you keep forgeting that fact.
And just like i said, saying PS3 has no games is a dieing lie, By the end of june you cant say 5hit bout that.

   Re: CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS - 2007-06-18

Don't you think an XBOX fan boy like yourself can spell XBOXs correctly NOT XBOXes. Maybe that is another word for a divorced game console or something. because it costs money! think about it! 360 is winning because its cheaper! PS2 won because it was always cheaper. Thats all it comes down too. UNLESS you gain the status that the iPod has, people dont refer to portable music devices as MP3 players but iPods. Its all about the cost of the product.

Blu-Ray has to do with videogames too. It's used to play games on PS3 currently (no disc space problems like with Xbox 360. For example the Team Ninja director said to IGN that "as usual we couldn't put in everything we wanted due to disc space limitations")

What happens next generation when Blu-Ray is the standard for video games and Sony doesn't want Microsoft to use the format on their next console?
It would be dead on arrival.

So actually, the only thing sony has to do is push bluray as the next gen format, make Xbox360 use it (make -> indirectly) and bwam they win. Its a win win situation. For sony..

   Re: MGSROCKS1 - 2007-06-18
 » Your forgetting though

Microsoft is trying to push the DVD format. I already have 5 DVD players including my PC so Microsoft isn't concentrating on watching movies using DVDs, they are concentrating on the games. Sony needs Blu-ray to win thats why the PS3 costs so much.

   Re: hahaha (Unregistered) - 2007-06-18
 » nope

MS is concentrating on the PC. the Xbox is a defense cuz MS thought playstation was gonna take some of the PC sales away and become a multimedia center without MS Windows.

MS would rather have you download media instead of having you store it on a disc. That would keep people using the PC AND using windows.

 » About these "games"

How many really good games does 360 currently have? Honestly theres only a handful, so why is that everytime i visit one of these sites i see 360 fanboys preaching about the "amazing 360 games". Theres only GoW, Forza, Oblivion, Vegas, Graw, Graw2, Condemned, anything else really? Not that i can think of... PS3 only has Resistance, Motorstorm, Oblivion, and soon to be Darkness (which i think is a multiplatform title) and Vegas. But with a years headstart you would think 360 would have more good games, but it seems like thats not true at all despite what 360 fanboys claim. One good game doesnt make a console worth its cost.

what the heck is a blu ray? is that like, laser discs?

   Re: ackeejag (Unregistered) - 2007-06-18
 » lazzzzzzzzzzzer disc

no HD-DVD would be the laser disk of this generation. it will forever sit on you stereo of shame of wasted money. if only they could make HD-DVDs about a foot longer in diameter it would be perfect. this is really good news for the blue ray format that sony created. and since the ps3 is the cheapest blue ray player to date (as well as a very powerful gaming system, photo viewer, mp3 player, internet browser etc.) people will buy it as their BD player. THAT is why this is good news for the ps3. its not that hard to figure out. people for the most part are not rich so if they want HD movies they will go for the "cheap" ps3 to do it with some extra perks to go along.(this is for non gamers ofcourse) if your a gamer you probably buying one because you know some awesome titles are just around the corner

me wants FFXIII nows!!!!!

Nice job. U explained it so no1 can twist your words. I bought my ps3 for Killzone 2, Mgs4, and of course FREE online. And I got news of Home which added to the reason.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-06-19
 » Nice going....

PS3 owners enthusiastic about blu ray have no idea what they have done.

There's going to be a lot of format wars from now on since you always give sony the thumbs up every time they want to make exclusive profits off all new media unlike with DVD. Looks like DVD will be the last time there was an agreement between companies to produce a single movie and media format so consumers and companies can benefit. Now only sony benefits, but acording to fantards that's a good thing right?

Who would want two formats?

Is either one better? Does a higher Gb count make it better? Watch a movie and compare each. Is there any difference?

Blu ray deserves to lose simply because sony is the reason there is a format war. That's all I'm advocating. Sony's greed is the reason consumers are getting screwed. Sony even admitted DVD was too cheap and that's the reason they invented their new format, and they were unhappy with their share of DVD profits so they came up with blu ray and did not seek approval of the DVD forum.

I'm going to miss DVD. Too bad sony's greed had to ruin such a good thing.

 » mr. non+sense

the fact that the movies look just about the same is the reason the extra space makes blu-ray the winner. Movies studios need more space so they can put in more extras and charge you more money. I'm good with blu-ray the hd-dvd people are in the way of progress. But that is M$ for ya, have people not buy a truely next-gen product in favor of your half-a$$ almost next-gen product. Look at the 360 and look at hd-dvd. They both just missed being truely next-gen. THat's because M$ won't sell you anything you won't have to upgrqade in four years, it goes against everything they believe in.

 » Im pissed off.

Im subscribing to Blockbuster online and I get pissed off because 70% of BD movies are not available. Im left with old or *****ty BD movies. PPL be renting lots of BD movies! Oh well, I have 15 BD movies myself and all I have to say is "F" renting movies.

   by Datnizzle - 2007-06-18
 » Why sense, why?

Why are you even posting on this, you don't care you have a 360, Next-gen DVD's have NOTHING to do with the 360, sorry. Your comments mean nothing, because you know nothing of the subject. Do you have a blu-ray player or hddvd add-on, nope. Do you keep telling us how happy you are with dvd9 (which the ps3 will play too)? Yes. Why bash blu-ray when you could care less. How dare Sony make a next gen console and not use media disc from the last-gen. Would anybody have bought a ps2 if it used cd's, and cd's are still around. CD's don't cut it for games anymore, like dvd9 won't in 2-3 years.

   Re: PS3 Fantard (Unregistered) - 2007-06-18
» somewhat related to your post

Games have nothing to do with the PS3.

Really, they don't.

All sony did was drag the playstation name through the mud, and screw over every hopeful gamer hoping for another successful PS2.

   Re: Eclipze_ (Unregistered) - 2007-06-18
 » Yea PS3 Fantard...

They draged it with Killzone 2, Mgs4, Warhawk, Final fantasy, Lair, Heavenly sword and all the other games im missing. 360 fanboys aren't accepting that the PS3 is a MULTIMEDIA system, PS3 users get good games along with movies, music, videos, and free online... The PS3 (unlike 360) lets you do way more than just play games.
If there draging the PS3 threw mud than the 360 must be the mud

Where are those games now?

Hype doesn't mean s*it. Show me results. What I have seen of those games (real game footage anyway) has been less than impressive.

   Re: Datnizzle - 2007-06-18
 » ?

What games does the 360 have? A bunch of average games, at best. What you got coming up, more average games. I'll be playing MGS4, Warhawk, maybe killzone watching blu-ray discs, and playing all the decent games you get 'cause they'll be out on both, except the awesomely average Halo 3, from the clips I've seen I'd rather have WarHawk.

» Another nail in the coffin.

HD-DVD just keeps losing more and more support by the day. Its no wonder blockbuster chose Blu-ray. Its supported by way more movie studios than HD-DVD. It also helps that the PS3 is the cheapest blu-ray player you can buy. I didnt actually see blu ray winning but its becoming more and more clear what the outcome is going to be.
