We don't know if it's sheer trust on Blu-ray formats' durability or just plain dislike of Adam McKay's acting skills, but torturing Blu-ray discs, specifically copies of Talladega Nights, seems to have become a favorite pasttime nowadays. First there was this guy who submitted the Blu-ray disc to the steel wool scrubbing routine, now we have Joystiq putting the format to what they call the supreme test. |

YAY IM FIRST HAHAH!!!!!! ok jus wanted to say holy crap a blue ray disc can stand up to alot of abuse and keep kickin atleast i kno i wont have a problem wit scratches on my games unless someone decides to "accidently" drop it onto a butcher knife haha
Haha the guy owned that Disc it can stand up to as much as a normal DVD or CD. Remember when they said they would have to put them in cases like UMD's lmao
Interesting Video
When u put the disc in it will only read the first part of the disc right? So if the scratches are in the middle or end of the disc then the PS3 won't have trouble till it reads from that part of the disc, like if you try to play 1/2 way through the film. So unless you watched the whole film each time I don't think it's a fair test
they should have scratched it from inside to outside. this test was probably rigged by sony.
ya....it was rigged by sony lmfao
anyways, it shows that the player still recognizes the disc and can start it. try doing the same to a normal cd/dvd. the players are designed to check over the disc before playing for malfunctions. most likely, a cd/dvd player will refuse to even recognize a disc scratched up that badly. it has nothing to do with the data in the middle. it has to do with it being able to still see the damn blu-ray. plus, the pizza cutter and wool steel clearly scratched the entire surface from outside and inside
You would need to have checked every single bit on the whole disc to know whether it really can stand these things. Obviously, some of the bits of the movies or whatever will have been got, but I wouldn't be surprised if all they had done is checked to see if it would load initially which wouldn't be affected.
Still, it's good to know they dont die too easily if it has been done properly.
Whats with the orange things on the top of the tv. anyone else see it?
probably some decoration or something... but what is the message that pops up at 1:25? i don't have a ps3 so i couldn't tell if it was a normal thing or somthing
It was a message saying he had been disconnected from the network or something along those words.
the BD player can do all that with ease......the x360's 2$ dvd player cant even read unscratched discs properly
Never had any skips with my 360. Good try making up unbelievable BS though.
he played nights of fire form gundam wing at the end. and it wasnt rigged by sony he had a 360 theyre so i doubt sony would show that in there video.
whats the name of that last song
its R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts. lol...its the first tune i ever learnt on my geetarrr XD
probably would have washed it off after the steel wool test. I don't like the idea of tiny metal shavings in my optical drives.
I was thinking the same thing. Let's see if he doesn't screw up the fan, or short circuit some other component.
The problem with the blu ray disc's coating is that it is expensive and too hard. The slightest misalignment can cause it to colide with the laser which is much closer than a DVD player's. I can't wait until there's reports of the blu ray drive's laser getting misaligned after 1-2 years like the PS2. By then you'll have 10 or so games so you'll probably just buy another PS3. You think I'm making up stuff, but that's exactly what happened with the PS2.
^^^ thats the biggest load of ***** i have ever heard. i've never had any problems with my ps2, except with the blue disc, and i still have my bulky version. and all i had to do to get my blue backs to work was just add a little bit of duck tape to the top so it would be able to grab better, you know....since they'll a few inches smaller than the regular dvds. you did know right?..................
So you tested that duct tape trick with the PS3 too huh? I fixed several PS2s and I had to painstakingly adjust the laser distance and test it with each disc type. Old and new DVD game, blue DVD game, DVD video, and PS1 game to see if it worked.
Remember that this protective coating is only in Blu-Ray Discs and not any other format (yes, I am looking at you HD-DVD!). For those of you saying that the coating is too expensive, try looking at the price of Blu-Ray Movies compared to the price of HD-DVD movies. You see, the consumer doesn't get the bill, so why should we care? You can also see this in the price of PS3 games compared to Xbox 360 games (I know, they are DVDs, my point is that they don't have the protective coating). The prices are the same. Remember, we are talking about the disc and the protective coating, not the drive.
@Mr. Common Sense... The Blu-Ray drive in the PS3 is of high quality. The DVD drive in the PS2 wasn't as high quality. A simple google search would show you that. There is a big price difference between the PS2 (when it launched) and the PS3 (when it launched). As they say, you get what you pay for. Please don't compare the two drives.

Someone really hates the movie, Talladega Nights.
Xbox 360 = Last year- just keep letting me spend money to catch up to the ps3's technolgy
Ps3 = Newest and the best bang for your buck system..
Wii = get what you pay for , no online play and baby like games and game play
the guy rubbed the steal wool, ballpoint pen and pizza cutter against the cd so gently. It wasn't till he got to the knife that he actually tried to scratch is. he could have easily ruined it with the pizza cutter had he tried.
