Researchers says Blu-Ray will drive PS3 sales - Image 1

Frank N. Magnid Associates director Mike Vorhaus has predicted that the Blu-ray drive of the PlayStation 3 will become its selling point in the future. This statement was based on the most recent consumers' DVD viewing habits on the PlayStation 2 (Sony.">PS2).

Based on information gathered by the team, over two-thirds of PS2 owners have used the console to play DVDs while 15 percent say they do this habitually. The trend has continued with the PS3, with a whopping 80 percent of those who own the console using it as a DVD player. One fourth of that number actually do so on a regular basis.

Judging from these findings, it looks like Vorhaus' prediction may become a reality. Historically speaking, there has always been a call for consoles to do more than just play games. Sony has decided to capitalize on this, and it looks like it will be paying off in spades.

Bleh. Games should sell PS3s.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-09-08
 » I agree

The Playstation console started a as CD add on for SNES solely for playing GAMES. Had a CD drive, so CD player was useful feature.

Playstation 2 also was a pure GAME console. Had a DVD drive, so the DVD player was a useful feature, and DVD was a universal movie and data format. It wasn't built around being a DVD player.

The Playstation 3 was almost built around Blu ray. The Blu ray player was almost a bigger selling point to Sony than the games. Problem is, many people who bought a PS3 are PS2 and PS1 owners who wanted a game console. Thankfully, I have a 360 so I can still get good games for now, but why is all the waiting necessary? When can I get some good PS3 games?

Hi MCS, now that you have a PS3, I was wondering if had a chance to try a wider sample of games. Keep in mind that when the 360 came out it too was lacking in a strong games library for at least a year. Anyway I do feel that while the ps3 gaming library is currently not as large as the 360, I do believe that is changing even now. Personally I can name some quite good games and while some may be ports and look better on the 360, they are still good games on the ps3. as far as exclusives. RFOM, Motorstorm, F1, Warhawk, Full auto2, Ninja Gaiden, Heavenly sword, and even Lair. I know it got some crummy reviews but I have noticed that it is a very polarized game and you will either love it or hate it. I personally loved it. I wont even get into Warhawk other than to say that as a big fps player myself, Warhawk has to be one of the most enjoyable game in that genre I have ever played and many many people will agree. It is an experience I dont belive is currently available on the 360 at any rate. Any way hope you are enjoying your ps3 as well as your 360.

 » Well

While games do sell Systems, this will actually make the PS3 the best system seller in Sony history, im thinking there sales will go far beyond PS2 with 150+million. and thats just on consoles, with BD and games i suspect Sony'sbiggest wallet of money in there gaming future, something MS has yet to do in the gaming market. So yeah this will actually provide major boost.

"The Playstation 3 was almost built around Blu ray. The Blu ray player was almost a bigger selling point to Sony than the games"
No duh wow it took you that long, BD has the highest potential to be the next big thing for media disks. And since the Space destroys DVD-9 and HD disc's you can see where im getting at.

"Problem is, many people who bought a PS3 are PS2 and PS1 owners who wanted a game console"
While some may have did you read the article here it reads this 'The trend has continued with the PS3, with a whopping 80 percent of those who own the console using it as a DVD player. '

So it seems 80% actually bought the PS3 for dvd player as well, so your many is actually non existence. So thanks for proving your little knowledge to everyone. And lack of reading ability.

» Totally agree with ya stealth

your logic using the aritcle itself truely makes Mister Common Sense (Mr. Dumb Sh(i)t) sooo much more dummer that he sounds. Mr. Dumb Sh(i)t please learn to R.........E........A...........D which is pronounce as read and try to understand the article....maybe if lyou try to keep both hands outside of the underwear while reading will help a lot......And because you are so dumb you would buy a system for just one feature of only gaming and probably will try to sue a company for giving you free stuff on with it doesn't mean the rest of the world shares your ignorance. Every person I know that has a PS2 has listen to music, watch DVD, and some watch DVD porn on the PS2......So if you think your lames ass wants to prove the article wrong, then go interview the 150+ million owners if or do they ever used their PS2 for any kind of multimedia and put that on youtube. If not you're stuck as Mr. Dumb Ass

I'm going to probably get Heavenly Sword and I hope it's as good as God of War. If it's a disapointment then I may trade in my PS3 for a new 360 elite. I'll probably rent Lair to see if the reviews are justified.

I have a PS3 and I love it. But Sony really have to get their act straight particularly their marketing department. Both 360 and the Wii have been marketed well. Just sell the PS3 for what it is. A video game console and don't emphasize on how its has a Blu-ray player built in or how it can run linux. Not every one that bought the PS3 cares that Linux may be installed in the PS3. Seriously Sony, get you act straight. More focus on good software as PS3 owners have already been informed to death on how powerful the PS3 is.

 » HE SPEAKS THE TRUTH

obviously a lot of people still want the PS3, no killer apps but almost 5 million consoles but when the the PS3 is being bashed or there is a new use for the PS3 SONY says nothing. PS3 timed exclusives are know from day 1 but when games for the 360 like Ace combat 6 come out there not known till the last minute.

» timing of new gen consoles cudnt be any worse!

genesis, ps1, ps2 generations all had nothing to wry bout since sdtvs were mainstream (obviously).

HDTVs are still among minorities....but it IS growing slowly. Until HDTVs become mainstream, i admit Sony will STILL have hard time if ONLY they rely on bluray - not to say theyre doing soming wrong, its just that the timing of new gen consoles cudnt be any worse. its not easy for sony to sell in 2days generation

» shut up and learn to read other comments

im not that stupid. I used those OLD RF CABLES from ps1 for my 16yr old TV and ps3!

let my clarify for those autism disorderly retards ie the guy above. Sony WANTs U TO GO HD coz they want u 2 go Bluray(nothing wrong with that)...........there is NO POINT in Bluray if the PS3 outputs in AV Standard Def.

 » A Few Words!

@ na2rul:

Excellent points! HDTV's are entering more households daily but their prevalence has not been established yet. Due to that reason BD is not going to sell the console to many people. That is why they are trying to build a bigger game library at the same time. My only question is why they don't advertise it's BD capabilities more often.

@OMFG:
Your language not only makes you look less than intelligent but you are also wrong. Obscenities don't make bad posts suddenly become good! Composite cables are an option but if you are using an SDTV then you won't even notice the difference that a progressive scan DVD player can provide let alone the differences that a BD gives over standard DVD's.

Read before responding! You sit in front of you PC and spew obscenities yet you were not even responding to his post with something that applied it.

My two cents.
