Blu-ray disc association - Image 1

Now this may seems like an overambitious claim but the Blu-ray Association which includes high flying companies from the world of business such as Sony, Dell, Apple and Warner Bros. to name a few, today told worldwide media that they were aiming to replace the DVD storage format within three years. Frank Simonis, the Blu-ray Disc Association's European chairman, said "within three years it will just be Blu-ray," doubting the credibility of the BRA's arch-rival: HD-DVD.

Of course, Blu-ray is currently in the lead when you count the amount of players that have been sold as Sony's PS3 comes fully-equipped with a Blu-ray player, whereas HD-DVD doesn't have the advantage of console support, although an attachment can be purchased for Microsoft's Xbox 360. Sony Computer Entertainment said it had sold over 1.84 million PS3s in Japan and North America and that one million PS3s are ready for launch next week in Europe, giving Blu-ray a bit head start.

Here's where it gets interesting: the big guns behind HD-DVD claim Blu-ray is outselling HD-DVD by five to one because the technology is being sold in the PS3, and that movie sales are still level; however 20th Century Fox claim that weekly Blu-ray film sales are three times higher than that of the HD-DVD format.

At the CeBIT technology trade show Sony reiterated its target to have sold six million PS3 game consoles by the end of the year which will once again add to the Blu-ray sales figure, but to get rid of standard DVDs in just three years is a very big claim. Can they do it? Tell us your view in the comments!

If Blu-Ray/HD-DVD players are $50 and titles are $10-15 it's possible, else no.

» 99% of the population DONT CARE ABOUT BLU RAY

LOL what is the point in this news! by THE BLU RAY Association!!!,

Other than PS3 owners No one cares about Blu Ray its as simple as that, you can walk into a shop and buy a $120 DVD recorder with hard drive that can record all day long, pause live TV etc etc etc or you can buy an expensive player that does NOTHING other than a slightly higher picture that you can only see if you buy a very expensive TV.

Its going NOWHERE.

 » hmm

although blu-ray most likely will dominate the market, im sure dvds will still be around for a while. Especially in flea-markets and poorer countries DVDs will most certainly still be sold. I mean VHS only died out a few years ago so i'd expect dvd to have a similar lifespan

   Re: senjutsu (Unregistered) - 2007-03-16
» dah, DVDs are there for another 5 years I'd say

Because at 1000$ NOBODY CARES but in some years , maybe in 5 it'll cost like 100$ or even less, so it's gonna be an OBLIGATION ( with the price drop over the next 5 years of the HD TVs ).

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-03-17
» I hope you die a slow horrible death blu ray

The blu ray association can lick my nuts. Does anybody care about the predictions of a scam front company set up by sony to mislead the public about blu ray? They're totally taking advantage of the dumb consumer because somehow they're spreading news that's speculative at best. So far they have said blu ray has won after 2 weeks of better movie sales, they constantly announce predictions blu ray will win and apparently HD-DVD will be wiped out, and now they act like HD-DVD isn't a threat anymore and don't even mention it.

People are forced to buy a blu ray player with the PS3 so they're winning because of that? Movie sales of blu ray and HD-DVD are still level! How could anyone believe fox and what they say about blu ray sales being triple?

Is there a HD-DVD association spreading lies about HD-DVD being the only format in 3 years? Did they say HD-DVD won during all the months it was totally whooping blu ray? I'm suprised what the blu ray association and it's partners are doing isn't illegal.

I will never buy a movie or player for blu ray.

This really is just marketing fudge. Of course DVD's wont be DEAD in 3 years but I think BLu-Ray has a GREAT chance to be THE leading next gen format and having many poeple switching over by then.

   by Gryff33 - 2007-03-15
» Yes, but not the way they mean

I believe DVD will be dead within three years, but it won't be replaced by Blu-Ray OR HD-DVD; it will be replaced by digital distribution, which has been gaining popularity since before the new disc formats came out.

   Re: Zen (Unregistered) - 2007-03-15
 » Digital Distribution

That may be true but only if bandwidths increase to allow quicker downloads/streaming - worldwide.

   Re: Constantinecy - 2007-03-16
» I would agree with Gryff33 and Zen but...

Let%u2019s take for example Japan, the got optical fibers connections!!!! Man we are talking about huge bandwidths (2.5 megs/s average)... and yes in Japans digital distribution will prevail as it is doing so now...

But America with its *****ty connections and worse Europe will not see this coming for many years to come unless they replace their public internet connection substructure. Which will cost them billions....naa I don%u2019t think so...
Microsoft and the American government will see to it that things will not change why?
Because they have enough problems with super hackers messing with their mainframes as it is, imagine giving the common hacker 5 10 20 times more bandwidth capabilities....

So my end of the story is that yes Blu will be for all of you!! But not in three years...5 perhaps

 » can't happen

Many, many people can't get high speed internet. It's easy for the city folk, but take a stroll out in the country and next to no one has high speed. One of the major reasons only half the people with ps3's have signed up for sony's network. Heck, my street was finally able to get dsl just a couple months ago and I'm only 10 minutes from a city of 300,000.

Ok when they say blueray is going to take over in 3 years they don't meen everyone will have it they meen that most of people will have it and use it, kind of like the dvd player when it was starting not everyone had it but it had taken over. You look at last years movie commercials they were still advertizing VHS but most people had DVD. It will take over but the people who can't afored it will stick with DVD.

 » Digital Dist SUCKS

I can't stand downloading movies. The problem with digital distribution is nobody wants to watch it on their PC monitor and distributors wont let you move it to a new medium (DRM). Also, even with high speed you are going to run into problems download long HD videos. I did a bit torrent on a 40gb file, that took me about 5-7 days. Even with great speeds you lack quality. Where I would see a future of videos in a storage medium that allows an on screen display where you select your movie, digital distribution is not NEXT. They may be next next gen or even next next next gen.

You can download movies/tv shows on YOUR TV

 » Xbox360 TV downloads

Not a chance any-time soon sonny-jim, it just isn't worth it, bandwidths just aren't good enough from a customer point of view, not for the 360 service (not yet anyway) and especially not on a global scale.

   Re: Vecha - 2007-03-15

not just for 360
   by Vietone - 2007-03-15
 » ...

Digital distribution will never be big for HD movies because even if you have a T3 connection, downloading a 1080p movie is well over 20GB and that takes even a T3 connection a long time to download.

DVD may not be totally phased out, but in 3 years, with the way Blu-ray is getting releases, it might just become the dominant standard, that alone will drive down the cost of players and media and become the new standard.

   Re: Vecha - 2007-03-15

there are HD movies far less than 20 gigs

never? Who are you? Both MS and Sony have said Digital distribution is the future, are you saying they are wrong?

   Re: Lurker (Unregistered) - 2007-03-16
 » Blueray is still unfinsihed

Blueray has one month of sales jump and they say they have won. These guys are a deluded as QJs very own Vietone. HD-DVD still has better quality, and outsold Blueray for an entire year, now its about 2to1 for blueray. But this isnt even a drop in the bucket compared to dvd sales. And they havent even got Blueray fully functional yet, none of the interactive features are done. Im a huge Hd-DVD supporter, but i really see both formats going the way of laserdisk. And vietone, even with a 10MB connection, i can download a 4 GB DVD is half an hour. And a Blueray movies is over 20GB, becasue its MPEG2. VC-1 encodes are closer to 15GB on the norm.

3 years sounds a little to soon but who knows what will happen in the meantime. In a year or two when a lot of people will own Ps3/blue ray player things could drastically change.

 » DVDs...

I don't think DVDs will be ousted in 3 years. I think HD-DVDs will be ousted in three years, unless HD-DVD gets some real studios under its belt.

   by WTF!?!?!?!?! (Unregistered) - 2007-03-16
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

Something else to consider:

Cheap HD-DVD players are now on sale for $500 when BR remains at $1000.

Also, the first hybrid unit has come out for sale (or is soon) that plays all three.

As soon as these units hit the $300 mark then it will become pointless to continue pressing DVDs.

It will make more sense to build HD players that downsample for those with no HDTV.

   Re: moo (Unregistered) - 2007-03-16
 » Na

Blu ray is at $500 with ps3.

Digital distribution is a *****e idea currently, it may take off in 15 years when a large proprtion of people have broadband speeds in excess of 25Mb/s. Blu ray will become the dominant format in many areas due to its storage space.

   Re: WTF!?!?!?!?! (Unregistered) - 2007-03-16
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

True, I didn't think about the PS3 pricing. However:

1. The average person probably wont think to buy a game console for just the player.

2. Isn't the 20GB model limited with 1080 output?

3. So the 60GB model is $600 USD (convert as you need).

   Re: Crow (Unregistered) - 2007-03-16
 » No.

The 20 gig model is EXACTLY the same as the 60 gig model, minus the larger hard drive, integrated flash memory card readers, and integrated wifi. Both are capable of 1080p HDMI output with 7.1 surround sound.

   Re: WTF!?!?!?!?! (Unregistered) - 2007-03-16
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

Very well then.

Can someone explain why the HECK stand alone BR player are $1,000???

I think even if these hit the $500 mark then more and more rental companies would stock BR. As it stands my three local Block Busters do not carry BR or HD-DVD.

if they want to gain some ground they better drop the prices to make competition.last nite i purchased (Blue-Ray) Casino Royale at my local best buy. for dvd it was on sale for $15.99 but for blue-ray $29.99. somebody outta let these ppl know that dvd is strong competition along with online rentals like netflix and blockbuster. 30 bucks is a 2 month subscription on either carrier. i think im better of just renting flix rather than owning them its pre-cursor to online dls.
