Blu-ray vs HD DVD - Image 1The Blu-ray Disc Association U.S. has released an official statement in response to the move made by Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks Animations to join the rival HD-DVD camp a few days ago.

Andy Parsons, the Blu-ray Disc Association's US president said that the announcement made by the two giant entertainment firms was untimely, considering the momentum enjoyed by their format.

"Blu-ray title sales continue to outpace HD-DVD sales by nearly a 2 to 1 margin, and major retailers have expressed a strong preference for Blu-ray," comments Parsons.

The Blu-ray Association chief adds, "Moreover, the price delta between HD DVD and Blu-ray players has been greatly reduced in the past few months," and he pointed out that this is a trend that's bound to go on until issues regarding the cost of Blu-ray technology disappear.

"Under these circumstances, we can only imagine what could have enticed Paramount to walk away from a format that is clearly selling significantly more software than the HD DVD format," concludes Parsons.

Excellent move by microsoft...This will put some sony fanboys butts on seats. Expect HD-DVD to have a big boost and soon beat blue ray. Oh yeah, it looks as though were heading that way for sure. I think the next 2 years HD-DVD will become the no.1 next gen disc and in 4 years there will be a new xbox 3 which will have a built in HD-DVD this will trually destroy blue ray.

anyways its not just M$ money that has been used to pay off these no brain movie companies its from the whole consortium. why strive selling BD movies when you can easily have 150 million bucks, easy money is efficient ain't it?

"hd-dvd consortium which Micro$oft is the leader."

Toshiba are the leaders VSG, HD-DVD is their format not Microsoft's, not Intel's, not Paramount's etc.

MS is the leader.

Microsoft are NOT the creators, the leaders or the main force behind HD-DVD, Toshiba are! MS are just one of a number of companies backing TOSHIBA's format.

"The HD DVD group, led by Toshiba Corp. and backed by Microsoft Corp. and film studios including Warner Bros."

So, will you stfu now please. ;) I'm only kidding with the aggression but geez guys, why do some of you insist on making claims without ever checking the facts first?

Search the net and you will find confirmation of Toshiba and HD-DVD from countless sources, so give it a rest please. :)

You could just as easily say Toshiba paid them.

Yes Microsoft are part of the Toshiba headed Australian HD-DVD consortium created in April, but other members are Intel, Universal pictures, Warner Bros and Paramount.

Oh wait, what was that last one again? Paramount? Hmmm. ;)

what movie company is going exclusive blu-ray that isnt owned by sony?

thats right, none.

the results are in, just hope that the ps3 lasts longer than the dreamcast did. the nextbox in the coming years will make it just as short lived though.

atleast HD has quality movies, all sony-boys have to look forward to is spiderman 3. and the only reason sony is making that financial blunder is to give its stock some investment and they have already made tons and tons of money off that movie.

» HD DVD is far from over.

You can pick a HD DVD stand alone player for $240 ($330 for 1080p). So for the same money as the nearest Blu-ray stand alone you can have between 4-8 more HD-DVDs to watch.
Blu-ray has some good movies but HD-DVDs seem to appeal to my taste more.

by HD-DVD is still better (Unregistered) - 2007-08-22
 » Even on component cabling!

The reasons they gave is because it's true -- HD-DVD is better. Period. Cheaper, faster, etc. It's been out longer and the spec is finalized. The money Toshiba gave doesn't matter, it's nothing to Paramount/Dreamworks -- it's the technology that matters and the cost to produce.

» HD-DVD Cheats You. Read The Facts.

One example is here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_high_definition_optical_disc_formats

If your smart enough to understand it. You would have to be a fool to go with HD-DVD. Blu-ray has higher bitrate, more storage and per gigabyte cost, it is cheaper.
   by RexNox - 2007-08-22
 » guess this means...

No shrek for me.

   by James (Unregistered) - 2007-08-22
» It's about copy protection, not bitrates

The biggest reason to choose HD-DVD over Blu-Ray is Sony's insistence on protection schemes that provide no benefit, and in many cases make the end user's (i.e. paying customer's) experience hell. HD-DVD toes the line, but omits an extra layer of encryption at the hardware level.

Although Microsoft continues to support DRM, Bill Gates has openly called for an easement of DRM restrictions. As he says, DRM "just doesn't work". In fact, it drives up the cost for the end user (e.g. faster processor to handle the decryption) with no significant benefit. And in the end, the hackers win and the honest customer suffers.

As for more technical reasons to choose HD-DVD over Blu-Ray... Blu-Ray holds more data, but accomplishes this by thinning the protective coating on the disc (this is the primary reason HD-DVD can't match Blu-Ray's density... HD-DVD chose to have a thicker protective coating at the expense of lower capacity).

If you scratch an HD-DVD disc, your chance of ruining the disc is far less than the same scratch on a Blu-Ray. And with higher densities, the same scratch damages far more data than traditional DVD discs.

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/415/2

I personally refuse to support Sony in any way, but that's just my personal choice. Whether it's the 'rootkit' CD incident or the extra encryption processing required, Sony has made it clear to me that as a paying customer, I come last.

PS ~ last I heard, thanks to HDCP and the AACS system, Windows Vista was officially unable to play HD on any platform... even when the video card is HD capable, compliant, and even when the card has an HDMI out, the protection schemes downgrade the quality to non-HD resolutions. Anyone know if this is still the case?

Link:
http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/ati_nvidia_hdcp_support/page2.asp

PPS ~ I almost forgot... Sony doesn't want 'adult' movies on Blu-Ray (they made the same restriction on Betamax). Like it or not, porn is a driving force in electronic technology. The internet today wouldn't have the throughput it does if porn hadn't been the killer app for the internet.

Scream at me all you want, I'm just stating dispassionate facts. : )
