Blu-ray - Image 1It seems 2007 really is shaping up to be the year of Blu-ray. After getting a lot of support from various outlets and having a steady stream of releases, Blu-ray has now become the first high-definition video format to sell more than one million discs. As the icing on top of the cake, it managed to reach this milestone in less than a year.

According to TMCnet, sales figured published by Home Media Research reveal that Blu-ray disc sales accounted to 70% of the high-definition movies sold during the first quarter of this year. The same HMR figures also showed that "nearly three out of every four high-definition movies sold in March were on Blu-ray."

"Blu-ray Discs have been outselling HD DVD by more than two to one since the beginning of the year and the gap is steadily widening," said Andy Parsons, Chairman of the Blu-ray Disc Association's U.S. Promotion Committee and Senior Vice President New Product Development at Pioneer Electronics.

"It's exactly what we've said all along would happen - the strong support for Blu-ray among movie studio and equipment manufacturers means that consumers have more choices when it comes to players and titles. And they're choosing Blu-ray by an ever-increasing margin."

As a PS3 owner, if you believe this report, I,m glad blu-ray is winning.

 » Blu Ray is winning nothing nor is HD-dvd

Blu Ray is winning what ?, the DVD9 as in the 360 has sold 1000,s of millions discs and is still the householders choice so who do you think it is really winning ?.

Check out the DEDICATED player sales like it or not the HD-DVD is outselling the Blu Ray player.

Did you not also see this news on TMCnet to? -

One of the main backers of the Blu-ray Disc format, South Korea's Samsung Electronics plans to release an optical disc player this year that will play both Blu-ray Disc and the rival HD DVD format, it said Friday.

http://www.tmcnet.com/usubmit/2007/04/13/2508543.htm

And who is Blu-ray Disc Association's U.S. PROMOTION Committee !!!! anyway ??.

 » HD is the future

yea of course DVD's are still outselling blu ray. But you have to look at the fact that HD technology hasn't been out that long only a year. Same thing happen with dvds it took a while before everyone made the switch to dvds. Same thing will happen in the next five years. Everyone will make the switch to HD tvs then they want the best picture so they will start buying Bluray and HDDVD movies whatever format wins.

Currently, five Hollywood studios exclusively support Blu-ray Disc: Columbia Pictures, MGM, Disney, Lionsgate and 20th Century Fox (Columbia Pictures and MGM are owned by Sony Pictures).

Four Hollywood studios support both Blu-ray and HD DVD: Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema (the former two are owned by Viacom, and the latter two by Time Warner).

Two Hollywood studios exclusively support HD DVD: Universal Studios and the Weinstein Company.

Thats who supports Bluray and those who support HDDVD

 » @ CV

Why doyou people think dedicated players mean...anything, really? Movie studios don't care who sells more dedicated players, they care about:
1:Consumer base-Dedicated HD player or not--if it plays the disc, that's good enough
2:Profit. More discs sold+profit for movie industry. More dedicated players on the other hand...means nothing to them.

Besides, do you really think there isn't a single person with a PS3 that bought it because of the BD feature? Really?

   Re: datnizzle (Unregistered) - 2007-04-24
 » to cv

360 did not introduce dvd9 to most people. That was around for years befor the 360, so give that up.
Why would I spend $800 on a "dedicated" blu-ray player when I can get a PS3 for $600. It would be stupid to buy a stand alone player.
There are already duel players, that helps neither side.
Blu-ray is winning period. You know Sony pictures owns the rights to half the movies EVER made right. They could keep blu-ray alive with just them and Disney signed on.

blu-ray is great, even if you have a 720p TV. I just can't bring myself to buy regular dvds anymore. Its old technology.

 » if you ask me it's good for almost everyone

hopefully the makers of hd-dvd will get wind of this and shut up shop, that will mean that consumers won't be forced to pick movies on one format or another, they won't have to buy movies from one studio on bluray and movies from other studios on hd-dvd... that would be expensive and annoying.

in the end the rich get richer, regardless of who they realy are the consumer sees very little difference. i say just let one format win, and as bluray is kicking ass right now then that's fine... look at dvd there were no losers, whereas with vhs vs betamax those who spent a lot on betamax lost a lot... we need a quick outcome so that people don't waste their money.

 » blu-what!!

I owned 5 blu-ray movies so far... i am planning to get Dreamgirls on blu-ray next week baby... Think about the games on PS3... they are all blu-ray format anyway, so i think they had to do it to prevent piracy because DVD was ripped so easily... blu-ray holds 25GB for single layer and 50GB for double layers... so who da heck wanna make and big azz copy of blu ray to their hard drive? thats will need some more power to the computer and think about it, blu ray burner burn BD-R slow but read faster while the movie or the game is playing. There are studios behind blu-ray, like:

* Apple
* Dell
* Hewlett-Packard
* Hitachi
* LG
* Mitsubishi Electric
* Panasonic
* Pioneer
* Philips
* Samsung
* Sharp
* Sony
* Sun Microsystems
* TDK
* Thomson
* Twentieth Century Fox
* Walt Disney Company
* Warner Bros.

So, tell me blu-ray aint winning? Oh Yes, they will win!!

 » Reading all the news also LG have gone dual

Also LG have gone Dual format -

The news makes Samsung the second company to shift from a single-format stance and adopt the idea of a dual player than can read both types of disc. The other, fellow South Korean makerLG Electronics, launched a dual player in North America earlier this year.

   Re: Dj Natas (Unregistered) - 2007-04-23

will play HD DVD in 480P, thats it. You guys might want to do a little research, Toshiba will no let them do 1080P.

   Re: Advertising -

   Re: ???? (Unregistered) - 2007-04-23
 » UH Huh

well it doesnt matter if they are making dual format players because companies like Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema said that they were going to make movies on both format long time ago before blu-ray came out.

Whats going to be crazy is what Warner Bros. are going to make. They are making a double side disc that will support blu-ray on one side the HDDVD on the other. Now thats pretty cool.

I didn't want to become a part of this HD war crap, but ever since I purchased a PS3 I already bought 10 movies. To name a few, Casino Royale, Rocky Balboa, Black Hawk Down, Babel, The Departed, Crank, etc. The PS3 is really pushing a lot of people to buy Blu-Ray. It did it to me and I'm sure it's doing it to a lot of people out there...

I'm sorry you only have 1 good game on your system that has been out a year and a half. How do you xboys find the time to troll, Aren't you too busy calling each other racists names on Gear of war. Or are you still excited about getting a couple of ps3 games on your system, you know the games you guys didn't like anyway. Shut the hell up and get a job. That way instead of being angry you can't afford a ps3 (because your parents already wasted money on your 360 you never play) you can go get one, and stop being jealous. I'm sorry M$ tricked you into thinking the "next-gen" started in 2005.

If I buy a PS3 and blu-ray fails then I still got my PS3, where as a stand alone player is pretty much garbage.

I dont think there are enough movies on either format to justify a purchase just yet but blu-ray is just going to keep pushing ahead because of the PS3.

RIP DVD ?, do you really think DVD is going anywhere ?, I can go buy a HDMI DVD player for peanuts and every film around is available for it, it has sold countless millions of discs and will do for years to come, HD-DVD and BLU RAY are just fighting for the scraps as most of the world will alway go spend $40 on a cheap video system or $90 for the more fussy ones who want HDMI output than any of the other Two systems,and I doubt this will change until they can compete with lower priced DVD systems....

good news for bluray!!

This was obvious since the beginning. and I sure the ps3 helped bluray achieve that milestone. For those of you who wanted to stay away from the format war.... buying a ps3 automatically puts you in the war. This is good news.

Anyways, I'm glad bluray is becoming successful. The format war is just confusing everyone and getting annoying. How many of you watch a really good movie (in theatres, or bootlegged) and all of a sudden dislike it cuz you know its universal...or sony, disney, fox. or how many times have you heard..."the bluray release list just doesnt appeal to me." VERY ANNOYING....cuz i know they WANT those movies.

anyways....go blu!!

..."the bluray release list just doesnt appeal to me." VERY ANNOYING....cuz i know they WANT those movies."

Yeah, I just heard "The Queen" is out on blu-gay. Awesome! All the blu gay movies are the best! There's no bad blu-gay releases. I own them all! Sony told me to buy them so I did!

Good luck being a sony profit tool moron.

ps3 has bluray.
buying ps3 + automatic bluray supporter. wheres the cunfusion in that?
sony's greed - never said anything about that.

bluray releases not appealing? annoying from people that watch spiderman, POTC... then say bluray releases doesnt appeal. i'll put it in your terms - I like windows XP, its very easy to use, but i dont like releases from Microsoft.

The Queen - never heard of it either. Think about other releases please.

Blu-Ray and HD DVD's are just a crock of beep! The human eye can only see so much as far as picture and clarity go. These things are built directly on the DVD/VHS side therefore there's nothing GREAT about them. Same technology just enhanced ever so slightly. Save your money, DVD's will be around for a long long time anyway.

   Re: rein - 2007-04-23
 » not as lame as you think

I do not doubt that DVD's will be around for a long time but you are way off on your assumption about the picture quality of BR/HD-DVD. It is a rather large gap in picture quality between HD formats and DVD. It is very noticeable.

   Re: I agree (Unregistered) - 2007-04-23
 » bingo

No doubt about it, BR/HD is all BS!

   Re: Justin (Unregistered) - 2007-04-23
 » wow, you're just so wrong

Watch both on an HDTV and tell me you can't see a difference. You must be half blind or have one sucky television if you think DVD is as good as HD DVD or Blu Ray.

   Re: damonous - 2007-04-23
 » The human eye is pretty capable

I 'm not sure what medical book Lame is reading, but it's an appropriate name. Unless you have really poor eyesight, and no means of corrective lenses, surgery, or therapy; there is plenty of detail in a good HD recording and a 720p or 1080p TV to see a difference vs DVD. Even with my glasses off, I can see a noticeable change in resolution and clarity. To extrapolate his comment, you could also say that DVD is built upon CD technology, only "enhanced ever so slightly" (because that's what it really is --remember, there was the short-lived Video CD MPEG1 movie discs --more popular in Asia-- prior to DVD). However, it seems that Lame has grown found of DVD.

   Re: Josh (Unregistered) - 2007-04-23
 » It's True

I've seen HD and BR both do not interest me at all. They've not fixed any of the flaws that were on dvd's for example with a higher disc space why do we need 2 disc BR sets of TV Shows? 10 Episodes should easily fit on 1 disc. Plus many of the new discs contain no new extras, I can get the same on a DVD. I won't be switching until the prices are way lower then they are now and by that time there will be another format. So I have to say that I do agree that this BR/HD is pretty stupid!

DVD is far from being a format that will surpass what the Human Eye can see.

The Difference between 480p to 720p is dramatic and the jump to 1080p is just as dramatic for people who pay attention to little details.

"A disaster overall"? --I suppose that's why Blu-Ray has reached the 1 million disc sell-through after 5months, where HD-DVD couldn't do it after 12months? It's quite clear that PS3 is the reason for Blu-Ray success. And, just because there are not 100 games available for it after 5months does not make it a "disaster". I can't think of a game system that ever had many games at the 5 month mark.

Why do you smell 360 fanboyism ? you seem to have got it wrong, the chosen format of the 360 is called DVD9 Dual layer nothing else take a look in any 360. and its also the format that proberly sells and hires more than a million every day so the time it dies the next gen console and drives will be here...
