long live blu-ray!!!
BluRay Rocks!!!
Yeah now I can see blu-ray movies have just start on the shelf in the uk's small town atm...
But there is no HD-DVD so far, only I can see them in London so far.
blue-ray movies are everywhere. even convenience store like 7/11. HD-DVD are scarce cant even remember the last time i've seen one.
but wait you think thats good?
no its not! when not a lot of people support HD-DVD we are also loosing the ability to watch HD-DVD exclusives. of course you know the legion of movie maker alliance on their side.
trust me having both sides is good, having half and half makes it whole.
The minidisc was very popular in Japan, but didn't take off anywhere else.
I'm not too concerned about Japan's movie sales.
this is exactly what i said 3 months ago. people kept saying "but people dont care about blu-ray. they just want to game". although that may be true to an extent, when you own a PS3 that has a blu-ray player, you WILL use Blu-Ray over DVD if you have the chance simply because you have the capability.
Anakin! "Yes my lord."
The reason why i like blu-ray is because i get to watch more Animes...LoL
Is it 3:1 or 2:1?
2.6:1
Actually there is "a clue" as to whether or not the PS3 is helping Blu-ray movie sales:
http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=117
Quote:
"While many have doubted the effect the PlayStation 3 would have on the format war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD it's hard to argue with the numbers. Blu-ray sales are up 700 percent since the mid-November launch of the PlayStation 3 and other Blu-ray players from Sony, Panasonic and Philips.
According to a recent survey by Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) of over 10,000 PS3 owners, 80 percent indicated they will buy Blu-ray movies and 75 percent said they use the PS3 as a primary device for viewing movies."
intended use is as a DVD player? No wonder the games suck.
Wii and 360 are the DVD players with the crappy games, PS3 is a Blu-ray Player
They never said they bought the ps3 to watch dvd's...This isnt even about dvd's idiot.
Also If you cant read it says the ps3 is what they'll primarily use to watch movies.
Dont be an a**. If you buy a ps3 and it has the ability to play blue ray, why wouldnt you use it? I mean i would gladly pay to watch my favorite movies in hd. It doesnt mean that people are buying the ps3 to watch movies it means that people are using the ps3 to its greatest potential. Also look at the near future, who has better games coming out? The only title that Im interested for the 360 its halo 3 and assasin creed, the other titles that are coming out are all freaking shooters. The ps3 has motorstorm, ff, assasin creed, mgs4, the cool game from the makers of jak and daxter, gt4. For the wii there are also some really cool games coming out.
may i remind everyone that the ideal standalone blu-ray player costs about $1,000. Not only is the PS3 a good blu-ray player, but it does a bunch of other stuff and still is cheaper than a quality standalone player
does not play DVDs.
So it's not a "DVD player with crappy games"
You're a real dumbfkk aren't you?
more players are out there for blu ray...{ps3}
= more people there to buy and play their movies
@Theone
"Wii and 360 are the DVD players with the crappy games, PS3 is a Blu-ray Player"
So the Wii is a DVD player eh? That's certainly news to me. Mine categorically does not play DVDs, maybe I've been had. I might go to the shop and ask for a refund :/
@Me Myself and I
While the findings of Nielsen VideoScan seem fairly believable, (though I don't know if they hold any bias) I find it hard to reason why anyone would blindly believe statistics and information presented as factual, when they come from places such as blu-ray.com or SCEA (two of the most highly biased factions in this whole charade).
Anything that comes from the metaphorical mouth of any company that has vested interests in the outcome of such events should be taken as propaganda and/or marketing. I don't care if Nielsen VideoScans results are accurate, whatever blu-ray.com or SCEA says is said to drum up support for them by excessive exaggeration of the facts in order for it to appear more in their favour.
Duhhh.
http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Industry_Trends/Disc_Sales/Finally:_VideoScan_Releases_High-Def_Disc_Sales_Numbers_/456
Hi def digest reviews both Blu-Ray and HDDVD so they are not biased. Also, they provide an actual liable source for the data.
Thank you Kutibah for correcting this ostrich that wants to keep his head in the sand and pretend all is well for HD-DVD.
It's not actually sales. I read on news.bbc.co.uk that some of these "sales" are actually Coupons given out by Sony to get cheap or free Blu-Ray Movies.
Nice to see that Sony's superior technology is winning. Cheap doesn't always mean cheerful :P
you have incorrect info. Sony included 5 $10 blu-ray rebates with the initial launch PS3's. however, these only were for launch blu-ray titles, not new ones. they were for only 10 specific movies.
yet, how does this matter? people are buying the blu-ray movies for a REASON. you dont buy something that you can't play. so both ways, it shows that the Blu-Ray market is large as people are certainly buying in large numbers.
Toshiba has had a 4-month promotion since Nov 2006 for 3 free HD-DVD movies via mail for any Toshiba player purchased. Last month, Best Buy also ran an additional 2 free HD-DVD's (any) with each player purchase for 1wk. They ran a buy-one-get-one free with a small number of BluRay titles the next week.
So, if all these free HD-DVD's are being included in sales numbers (unknown), who's the one really skewing the numbers?
for all of you wanting real numbers, go here:

Blu Ray and Hd-dvd ! yer right, you just forget one thing the HDTV is still just a gimmick, its fine if you want to play next gen games or Movies but for NORMAL TV shows the picture is crap its blocky and the closer you get the worse the picture looks,so stop hyping up the HDTV as it will be years before HD TV is broadcast as the norm and at the moment HDTV is just an overpriced PC monitor that can also show TV broadcasts BADLY.
HD-DVD is the FUTURE of TV. You can already see everyone starting to move towards wide-screen broadcasting. It will only be a matter of time before HDTV becomes the primary format
The US Govt (Congress) has mandated that in 2009 all analog terrestrial broadcasts will end, so that the FCC can resell the same bandwidth as higher multiples of compressed digital channels. If you've seen HiDef in the store, or briefly at a friend's house, you haven't seen HiDef. There are occasional compression artifacts depending on the quality of the broadcaster's encoder used for the show, but those DON'T exist on either BluRay or HD-DVD (that's the whole point of those formats). I have a 1080p LCD, HD-DVR, and both format players. There is a difference, and it is not a gimmick. A gimmick would be 3-D glasses and a 640x480 television of yesteryear. Full HD can be so clear it is almost like 'real' 3-D.
Blu-Ray will win .. end of story..
More supports witin all industries...
check out the board of directors ...
lol! HD-DVd.. pwnt
The statement that people with PS3's will buy blu-rays because they can is very valid....this was Sony's main strategy and the reason they forced blu-ray on anyone that bought a PS3...
I'm just wondering, why anyone with a PS3 would actually buy movies...with linux on board and the media players available, why the hell are you buying $40 movies ?
I wonder if this includes all free Blu-Ray game that comes with the PS3, hmmm I wonder. Of course it does, this isn't a big deal. That Will Ferrell crap is going multi-platium and it's one of the worst movies of 2006!
Just watched Mission Impossible 3 last night on blu-ray on our new Sony 60" SXRD.
OMFG. Stunning. Movie theaters are in big trouble. By far the best movie in the series btw.
The PS3 has turned out be such a fabulous piece of hardware we went out and bought the SXRD from Sony. What a t.v. as well. Stunning picture. Cnet has a great tips and tricks article on tweaking it.
Anyone who doesn't think that people are also using the PS3 for blu-ray are fooling themselves.
In fact the "shortage" of games is looking more and more like a master stroke of ensuring blu-ray took off...I know we initially bought more blu-ray discs than we might have otherwise bought. And it will now be very hard to go back to DVD's - ensuring continued blu-ray purchases in the future from millions of PS3 owners. HD-DVD is in deep deep trouble. Deep trouble IMO.
Once you see a few movies on blu-ray your not going back to DVD - they just seem flat in comparison.
Even more interesting is I've starting using the built-in browser which is a much bigger deal than I originally thought.
For example I can go to sites like www.musicovery.com and pipe an endless jukebox of music thru the sound system. Save images from flickr and display them on the big screen - high res pictures look fabulous btw. You can actually play your imported music and the sound from websites at the same time for a sound mashup. Both streams play flawlessly at the same time. Fun and hints at lots of future possibilities with sound mixing...
Does the 360 now allow me to browse what I want or is it still locked into live only content and what MS has decided is best for me? Curious to know if they changed that.
SACD is next on the list to test out. I hear it's phenomenal.
Incredible value. Games, blu-ray, dvd's, sacd...truly a next gen system. The synergy is undeniable. Blu-ray is certainly part of that.
The quality of this machine is so apparent it doesn't surprise me we aren't seeing the high failure rates we saw and are still seeing with other consoles.
Upgrading the hard drive in the future is quick and painless..sweet. Very sweet.
Everything has gone so swimmingly I think I'll look into the whole Linux part as well..working on a 60" screen is starting to look very appealing.
So in the end a PS3
=
Xbox360
Xbox Live
Media Center PC
Standalone HD-DVD or Blu-ray player with HDMI
Standalone SACD standalone player with HDMI.
Never knew much about SACD before but it looks like it is to cd's what blu-ray is to dvd and since that difference has been significant enough, time to start checking SACD out..
All in one box with only two cables coming out the back. Sweet.
Waiting to see what happens with the HD Eye-toy and it's rumored motion detection
Suck on this you xbox fans =)))
Dont think that im a PS3 fanboy though..
I own xbox360 and i like it.But it's just pains me to see how narrow minded people attack PS3(and Sony) not knowing the potential it holds.
And it all reminds me of those people (sorry not good at History) were trying to prove the fact that Earth is round and got killed for that lol.
Sony has my respect for all their products never failed me. I dont have PS3 yet but im going to get one 100%.
And i know it wont be a waste.
Even tho i own Xbox360 i kinda hope PS3 will kick its ass!
p.s. oh and by the way there's usualy lots of comments and shouting from xbox fans. where are they now? did they finaly realised they lost the fight? (bite me suckers!!!)
Long live Sony
If you bought a XBOX 360 for games, what do you need a PS3 for? If and when Blu ray players are reasonably priced, the 2-3 good games available for the PS3 will not make it a worthwhile purchase because it will stay at $500+ for at least 3 years.
This is stage 1 of the fall of the big internet anti-sony hate campaign. I can't count the amount of times people on (for example) Digg called Blu-Ray the next Beta. Well they will be eating humble pie soon!
Even will the PS3 struggling gaming wise Sony makes a profit off BR sales.
nice contingency plan.
Just Imagine when the game library builds!!! :)
And most of the PS3 games already out are great: Resistance, RR7, Genji (IMO), and Motorstorm soon...
I can't wait untill the next gen when microsoft is forced to use Blu-Ray in there next Xbox, then you'll see the Xbots saying "Blu-Ray is so great!! and it looks better on the 720!!"
I think Jettic's comment is right-on. Unless Microsoft does something soon, I think there is the real posibility we'll see an Xbox 360.1 with a BluRay drive. The fact that they released the add-on HD-DVD drive doesn't really show confidence in that format, since it's an afterthought (and a poorly-matched one aesthetically, at that).
The only interesting thing I will say is that I happened to look at the Midway Battlestations box for the 360 the other day: the label indicated support for 480i,480p,720p,1080i, AND 1080p. ---Does this signal the coming of an HDMI-equiped, HD-DVD -equiped 360.1?
Certainly, although I have both formats, I'd love to see HD-DVD tank. My point is, I think it will unless MS goes 'all-in' like Sony did. If not, they and all the 360-fanboys need to take a reality pill. The format war is going to end before it began, and the Xbox 720 will be a reality in as premature a time as Xbox 360 followed Xbox.
Damn! Most of the "AAA" games for PS3 are rumored to be coming out in 2008! I hope I can wait that long while I see so many good 360 games coming out before then. I'll just have to overhype blu ray until then so hopefully people will buy a PS3 for blu ray.
6 million Kids from 12 to 22 years.
1.- Their parents bought them an Xbox360
2.- THEY TAKE OVER THE INTERNET TO IMPOSE
THEIR HATE OVER SONY
Why is it more likely a parent would buy a XBOX 360 over a PS3?
I guess I wouldn't know since I've always had to buy everything with my own earned money, but I like value, choice, and quality games so I'm a XBOX 360 man.
This isn't about hate for sony, it's hate for using thier game division to promote and support their owned movie studios, TVs, receivers, cell technology (which they are trying to implement on so many other things) and of course blu ray products and technologies. It seems gaming is the lowest priority to sony with the PS3, and they are doing a genuine disservice to the masses who supported their previous consoles.
Note to sony, I don't want a product that tries to give me reasons to buy other products for your company, I want a game console that gives me a reason to buy games for it!
I just did my first share in helping Blu-ray win the so called HD-War...
I bought MI:3 from Best Buy...
I sure do like watching my Blu-ray movies in 480p on my HDTV.
http://digg.com/gaming_news/PS3_BluRay_movies_don_t_display_in_HD
I hope that the ps3 sales get better. Come on sony fans support the BEST system ever made. as far as the format wars, even thou blu-ray is catching up, I still wonder how is hd-dvd winning. I watch tv up to 3 to 6 hours a day. the main channels I watch is: tech tv,both mtvs, all the bets, fox, nick, cartoon network, and comedy central. and as of now Ive never seen an hd-dvd commercial. but Ive seen plenty of Blu-ray commercials. I still only actually seen one hd-dvd, but Ive seen walls full of blu-ray. Are these figures real??
The problem with the comparison at the moment is the content avaliable for people to buy on HD-DVD. Studios like Warner have slowed down the releases of HD-DVD because of complaints from Blueray that releases were coming out on HD-DVD first, mainly due to blueray production problems halting its release. So when more titles come out on HD-DVD (when blueray get their ass into gear) then sales figures will be completely different. I think most people with HD-DVD already have most of the titles avaliable and are just waiting for new ones.
You want a comparison that isnt like any of the above BIASED ones above try these type of links other than just the ones you want to believe.
http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/05/warner-home-video-provides-first-hd-dvd-vs-blu-ray-c

/2006/08/05/warner-home-video-provides-first-hd-dvd-vs-blu-ray-comparison/
To get link to work it looks lik you have to paste both parts into your browser as it seems to long to show as one line on this post.
It might not have been biased at the time, but it is hardly representative now. Since they did the original comparisions Blue-Ray has had two major improvements.
Dual layer discs started appearing to allow a higher bitrate on MPEG-2 movies, and publishers started using the AVC codec for Blue-Ray.
Go find a disc coded in AVC on both platforms and compare them if you actually want to be unbiased.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE... QJ.. What are you doing. If you want to make a story, do it. But don't quote that xbox fanboy mr common sense in anything again!!! He is the least qualified source you could ever find. I thought you read the comments.
