Blu-ray - Image 1It seems that Blu-ray players will indeed be seeing substantial drops in prices this year. While most Blu-ray players are usually around the US$ 1000 price range (a very notable exception is the PS3), but Sony's announcement of the $US 599 BDP-S300 is likely to be first in a wave of inexpensive Blu-ray players.

Sony Electronics president Stan Glasgow had previously commented that the year will see substantial drops in Blu-ray player prices, but, according to IT Wire, a drop of 60 to 75 percent in around 18 months would be unusual. Previous experiences with home entertainment gadgets have proven, though, that there are critical prices - sweet spots, if you will - at which almost everyone will go out and buy the new device.

Although Sony has previously complained that DVD players became a commodity product too fast, perhaps this time the company has its sights set on Blu-ray movie sales. The same thing happened with DVD players. When the players became widely available and affordable, movie sales also skyrocketed.

Will this spell Blu-ray's ultimate victory? Leave a comment and let us know what you think.

 » No where near enough

They price drop is no where near low enough until it drops to about $100 the average householder will not care one bit about it and will just carry on quite happily with DVD...

 » ...

Don't forget that DVD's are about half the price too. A new format will take over, just not as fast as Sony would like it to.

   Re: Supergrover (Unregistered) - 2007-03-05
» needs to be a little cheaper

I remember buying my first DVD player in 1998 for about $300 and during that period the players were doing pretty well and definitely took after they dropped to around $150.

At $600, the price is still too high for mainstream but is still low enough for the upper middle class; which is quite a number of people.

going from $1000 to $600 is a pretty big price drop for only being on the market for what? 4 months?

Actually it was for 2 weeks in January NOT Two months and they are still playing catchup in overall sales and that is without the Intenal HD-DVD which is not in the 360 as standard yet.

 » Sony's victory is inevitable

I don't think they need to drop to as low as $100.00 for it to become the norm. Probably lower than this recent price drop but not that much lower. High Definition is becoming more and more popular and sought after each day and prices are dropping on on HD TV's every day too. So Sony will definitely be victorious this time around. There will not be a repeat of the Beta Max fiasco. They have say too much backing and too much of a lead to lose this time around. The market place is perfect for it as it stands right now.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-03-06
» keep your wild speculations to yourself

You say blu ray will win only because HD TVs are selling more?
There isn't much of a lead, in January blu ray sold 1,000 more. That didn't stop $ony from declaring victory though. It was as pathetic as george bush declaring victory after ousting saddam. HD-DVD has good backing, but no hype system or forced HD movie player sales with a game system set up like sony has.
My god people are stupid.
Back up your predictions with facts, not meaningless BS you made up.

I say if Blu Ray players sell for 300 BR will Win.

I think having BR players sell for that price would really help BR and could win.

It's BD not BR. Blu-ray is one word. that would be like calling dvds dvs

As soon as normal everyday people make the switch to HD in the next 2 years when HD broadcasts begin to be sent out, thats when Blu-Ray will take over.

In TWO YEARS LOL thats a lifetime in electronics, I bet you something new and cheaper, more economical more friendly etc will hit the shelfs and that will be just about the time dvd sales start to slow..

» Did you have any doubt...???

Common twice as much capacity full HD (1080p) and not 720p and 1080i for nearly half of HD-DVD movies. The battle for blu r was won ever before its concept...

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-03-06
» I only doubt your intelligence

I don't even know what you are trying to say. More storage doesn't necessarily make a storage medium better. HD-DVD has better picture with more advanced compression technology. That and the fact there's just as many HD-DVDs to choose from at the store as blu ray discs.
$ony's arrogance is the only reason there is 2 HD movie formats. Why support them for screwing consumers in order to make more money?

 » Blu Ray is LAST

Keep kidding yourself Blu Ray has won something, it is in LAST place in the real world, the DVD sales and rentals in One day are proberly more than Blu Ray can muster in Six Months, Non PS3 people dont care about Blu Ray BUT a hell of a lot of people have heard of HD-DVD and that is why they are letting it speak for itself and yet you need to tell everyone Blu Ray has already won etc etc , Keep Dreaming...

You sir, are a *****ing moron. Blu ray has already won, so shove your HD-DVD up your ass, where it belongs. BD is 3:1 over HD-DVD and leading in EVERY category. It is tied with hardware standalone players, but in about a month, there will be a huge gap.

We will be taking your 360 next, idiot.
Goodbye.

 » not yet

"BD is 3:1 over HD-DVD" was reported by Sony.
If it's right, it's just because of the PS3 not the BD player. If xbox360 has built-in HD-DVD oh sorry Sony.
BD's sold well this time because most people with PS3 use it as BD player while they don't have games to play.
Sony says you have 5 hours HD movie with BD but there is no movie has 5 hours run time out there--->BD is good for TV series. And it's cost me 600$ for 5 hours HD moive player, noway I rather get a PS3 to do the job and omg I can play FFXIII and MGS4 with 500$. I save 100$ to play the electricity bill. Iam sorry my English is suck.

» Poster above I agree with your no games comment

You have got to remember that most PS3 owners are more likely to be buying films than games as its not exactly as if they have a good range of games worth buying, so if they get a decent game release expect to see the Movie sales drop.

   Re: Zen (Unregistered) - 2007-03-05
» Good point (in a way)

There are always game droughts at certain points of the year and even more so on the next gen platforms, therefore if your comment is right than BD sales will go up during these droughts and that is another reason why BD will rule you all! Mwaaaa Haaaa Haa Ha!!!

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-03-06

PS3 is having a 1 year game drought.
XBOX 360 had one too, but it only lasted 3 months, now it's over.

I'm still shocked that spinning disks cd/dvd/harddrives are still around. I figured the move to memory moduals would be already around by now. I do know that it's cheaper to do so on disks then memory, but oh well blueray will probably take over dvds. This was Sony's big mission plan to sell their blurray tech. (hence why they are in ps3's)

» The PS3 a good choice for Blueray player

After researching the HDCP situation, it looks to me that the PC media center solution is fraught with video card HDCP support problems, and while I bought my PS3 for several reasons (playing games, running Linux with multiple cores), the turnkey nature of the device as a BD player is less troublesome than the alternatives. I have already started investing in BD media and I am VERY happy with the visible quality at 1920x1080p.

   Re: qweqq (Unregistered) - 2007-03-06
» Blu Ray is not a good choice for PC

DVD is leading, NOTHING ELSE COMES CLOSE...
Blu Ray in a console is rubbish, PC is best and then standalone players of any format.

HD-DVD has better picture quality actually.

 » There's no WOW factor

IMO.... There is no WOW factor like when the consumer changed from VHS cassette tape to DVD disk. Same when we changed the audio cassette to CD. There was a hugh difference in quality. And now that is not the same, for the AVERAGE user.

Looks like Duck, Walks like a Duck, Hmph! Must be a Duck. Except the duck cost $30.00 per movie, vs $15.00, DVD. And if your want to play your duck then, it's going to cost whole lot more.

My 70$ 4 years old DVD player and 10 years old 14' Sony TV still output sharp colorful and bright image after all the hard-work time. They and the DVDs will still be around for more 10 another years. Sorry HD-DVD or BD see you then if you survivor.

And...
Studios releasing movies on Blu-ray Disc can choose to use VC-1 or H.264/AVC instead of MPEG-2
Blu-ray Disc allows conventional AC-3 audio tracks at 640 kbit/s, which is higher than DVD/HD DVD's maximum, 448 kbit/s.

Video codecs they both use
MPEG-2
MPEG-4 AVC
SMPTE VC-1

Dolby Digital Plus support is mandatory for standalone HD DVD players at a maximum of 3 Mbit/s, while optional for BD players and support up to a higher bitrate of 4.736 Mbit/s.

In addition blu-ray has more support

"MAJOR” studios are committed to the format. That is to say Paramount and Warner, Fox, Disney/Buena Vista, Lion's Gate, MGM, and Sony/Columbia are all behind the Sony backed format.
Universal is thus far not also committed to releasing its films on Blu-ray.

And as the ps3 is the cheapest blu-ray player on the market ill compared it to the $500(ps3) vs. $500(hd-dvd) or the $400 premium xbox 360 not much differences in prices
as you can buy a hd-dvd disc $2s cheaper than a blu-ray disc .
