This was an inevitable outcome from the beggining, why pay the same and get less space and features? Thats why Blu-ray is superior and it has the next gen format vib as opposed to HD-DVD which feels like a beefed up DVD.
Something I dont get is that we all know what Microsoft means they can buy a continent if they wanted..why dont they buy out Sony and get it over with once and for all....????
Just joking here...

» why would MS want sony?
The only thing sony can do right is make TVs.
They lost 2 billion dollars last year.
Sony needs to stop making "game consoles" and laptop batteries if they want to make money again.

You sure have no idea what the hell is going on do you. Microsoft has been selling a lot more consoles but they have actually lost more than Sony seeing as how their entertainment division is 5 billion dollars in the hole. When Sony drops the price and the upcoming games hit the market , Sony's position is going to start changing in these console wars.

Dont forget why MS wanted to get into consoles in the first place. To protect the PC.

Haha BLU-RAY rocks! It's kicking hd-dvd's butt all over the place! That teaches a lesson to all those haters saying adding blu-ray in PS3 was a mistake.
Once BR it's been established as the only next-gen format, PS3 will gain the some advantage as PS2 did with a dvd player.

My laptop runs Ubuntu. Way better than XP or Vista, IMHO! The point is that it was purchased as they almost entirely are with an OS that I did not own! You see what you are paying for is a license to use it on one PC. You never own it ever, Micro$oft does! When was the last time you saw an ad for a new PC or laptop advertised as preinstalled with the latest linux system? You don't because they are all preinstalled with Vista now.
That is the simple truth!

» Dram on PS3 owners your console is even flopping in Japan and it is being beaten in software sales by the 360 there as in the rest of the world to
Lets put it in the real world, the 360 has the best selling drive in it,its the same one as in almost every home in the world be it in their dvd system or their PC its called DVD9 and it will be here for years and years and the time it goes away there will be a whole bunch of new formats and much cheaper than Blu Ray and Hd-Dvd.
And the Wii has the weakest drive but is kicking the PS3 arse and lesser so to the 360 aswell.

Okay 95% of the people here are biased or they have one of the consoles and don't realise they are. In the long run prediction of facts, figures and opinions and the reason for all this debate is either:
a) you buy a ps3 and you get the (basically won) future of high definition dvds in a built in blu ray drive that comes in the ps3.
b) yet in the xbox 360 you get the better gaming console.
so it all depends on really, whether you want your gaming console to play games with, or if you are more interested in the overall features of the console i.e the gaming and playing back high definition dvds etc.. then yes, go for the ps3... or read on...

i mean XBOX owners might not need a Blu Ray right now. But its not bad to have it available in your Next Gen console too ASAP! atleast PS3 owners are already set in the years to come.
so its nice to hear that Blu Ray had pickup up the sales against HD DVD as what i had predicted since 2005.

MS will probably release a dual format add on eventually. If not I will wait and buy a stand alone dual format player. You will always be stuck with just blu ray.
I can get any movie I want on DVD for now, and my 360 upconverts the output to 1080p.
Oh no I'm missing out on a slightly sharper picture, wahhhh!!!!!

If you want to buy a stand alone Blu Ray in the near future that would be fine. But when are you planning to buy it 2 yrs from now? 5 yrs from now?
How much is a stand alone Blu Ray today?
2007 year - $1000
2008 year - $650-1000 (maybe)
2009 year - $500-650
2010 year - $400-500
2011 year - $300-400
2012 year - $200-300
2013 year - $200-300
2014 year - $100-200
for additional $200 i wont wait until the year 2014 just to buy a stand alone player. sorry to disappoint you but when did a console became a success using a add on. remember what happened to the PS2 when SONY decide not to include the Online Network Adapter and a Hard Drive. the online was not that successful. for me Blu Ray is for gaming...movie is just an added bonus. just my 2 cents

I don't care what any player that you have upscales it's resolution to. It is only taking a 720x480 picture, running it through an algorithm, and trying to guess what it originally looked like. It will never be a truly HD source so stop saying that it will.
On the other hand BD starts HD and stays that way all the way to my HDTV. It is an apples to oranges comparison.

MS does lose quite a bit since they have invested alot of support in the HD DVD format.
If HD DVD fails, thats one more reason Ms wont drop the price of the Xbox360 to make up for the loss.
Remember, Microsoft is still recouping the dept from the original Xbox, Software Development for the Xbox, Xbox360, software development for the Xbox360 and HD DVD drives.
In the last gen, only Sony and Nintendo made a profit from the consoles. Microsoft is still the only one who didn't profit from last gen.

Hes exactly right. MS gaming division is in deep ***** actually. They have a greater loss than Sony.
Plus they only wagered on HD-DVD because it was another chance to make an attack on Sony. And the possibility of winning the format war would mean they would throw Sony out of the competition, I geuss Sony made a smart investment in Blu-ray.

Even though I own a Ps3, here's what I think:
Sony cheated, they used the Ps3 to get Blu-ray into the market. Blu-ray is actually a better investment because of the space, you cannot increase the space other than creating more layers on a disc, which if blu-ray does, it can reach higher than HD-DVD, but some people complained that HD-DVD can write and read faster, well we can update the drives now can't we? But not the space. Sony used smart tactices to overcome the market, which I loved when people said "HD-DVD 3:1 Blu-ray" LOL, yeah that was before Ps3.

Blu-Ray even uses the same LASER wavelength as HD DVD... The big difference is improved focusing.
Blu-Ray had been originally designed prior to any of this HD DVD nonsense by a number of partners (Sony, TDK and others, including even MS and Toshiba) as the next step after DVD. Then Toshiba got too greedy and decided to betray their partners and rush an inferior and cheaper format, HD DVD, into the market.
Anybody who thinks that HD DVD is "righteous" or "better for the consumer" needs to have their head examined.

HD-DVD was approved by the official DVD forum (companies who developed DVD) in 2003. The DVD forum was started by the major electronics companies behind DVD to make sure compromises were made to ensure things like compatiblity and competition between partners wouldn't harm the format. The purpose of the DVD forum was to prevent future format wars like VHS vs. betamax.
Sony did not propose the blu ray format to the DVD forum for official approval. The DVD forum could not approve or deny it because it was never submitted! Also since the DVD forum was not involved, the blu ray format is still incomplete and compatibility issues with older players are inevitable.
Sony wasn't happy getting a peice of the DVD pie, they had to have the whole pie. They didn't care about supporting a single, consumer freindly format like with DVD since they didn't bother getting approval. It's all about the $$$$.
Sony is all about screwing both companies and people. Just ask the friendly folks at Lik Sank what they think of sony. If you don't know, they were a Honk Kong importer that sold Japanese PSPs to Europe. Now $ony sued them out of business, simply for selling their own products.

» You are truly unique!
You spell out how HD-DVD approached the official DVD forum etc... 4 paragraphs entirely full of nothing. You really are a treat to watch in action.
Do you want to know why Sony did not approach them? The answer is simple! They did not need to. They did not make a new DVD or propose a change to the old one. That is the problem with the HD-DVD camp. Instead of making a truly next-gen format like Sony did the HD camp just tried to improve the old one and they should have spent more on R+D. HD-DVD discs read just like an old DVD with the readable layer being .6mm deep in the disc. The only difference is the laser can read data chains that are packed more closely together.
BD on the other hand actually changed the way that the whole disc works. BD has it's initial layer only .1mm into the discs surface and therefore can continue to pack on the layers as it gets deeper into the disc.
You see that is why they didn't give a flying leap what the official DVD forum had to say. They were not trying to help them they were trying to make DVD's eventual replacement. They most likely succeeded!
Just because your post is long it is still worthless if it only contains fluff and opinions that are not based upon facts. Try again!

The purpose of the DVD forum is to get companies to agree on a single format. If blu ray was better and sony submitted it to them it probably would have been approved and there would just be blu ray!
It's all in the f*cking article!
I would support blu ray, if there was only blu ray.
But that would mean less money for sony.
It's well known sony wants to make the cheapest blu ray players and they want to stay on top of even their own partners, that's why they went around the dvd forum!
My god you all are in denial.
This folding junkie dumbf*ck just makes up excuses denying any greed on sony's part, when it makes no sense! DVD forum isn't about DVD only! It's about optical media!
What do you mean they didn't need to get approval? If they cared about only one format for consumers, they would have! The reason for not getting the approval is GREED!!!
Sony wasn't happy with DVD royalties, since Toshiba was credidted with most of the development work, and sony wanted something that would take more time to go down in price, they even admitted that!
I can't believe I supported a piece of s*it company like $ony all these years. MS is definately the lesser of two evils in my book. Unlike $ony, they make games for my games console and don't force me into this stupid ass format war with these dumbf*cks.
