CES 2008: Sony touts BD Live, Blu-ray transfers from PS3 to PSP - Image 1

The next generation of portable cinema viewing has just been demoed to the public at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), and surprisingly it's stemming from Sony's camp. Samples of Blu-ray movies were successfully copied from a Sony PlayStation 3 Blu-ray drive to a Sony PlayStation Portable's memory stick, as part of Sony's new gig known as BD Live.

BD Live web-oriented service appears to be Sony's approach to interactivity as well as portability, but it isn't limited to copying low-resolution movies to portable players. Other abilities include ring tone downloading and other media content to a BD Live media player.

David Bishop, president of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, said, "There was always the promise of greater interactivity. You'll see that coming in the new year," though more details on what else BD Live will offer were few at best. Expect more in store as developments roll in.

A whole lotta kudos goes to TheSilenceOfNoOne for the tip!

 » low res

not really, it won't be a high res version of the movie. If you want it on your psp, maybe, but I am sure sony is covering their a**es with DRM.

   Re: Someone_PR - 2008-01-07
 » well..

they are not so dumbs... it will have some drm or copyright in it to be only played in the PSP... thats why they still don't launch it since a year... if something that sony have in mind is the security.. anyway the movies to the psp will be only at 480p... so... the blu ray movies will keep sellingg because if someone buy a blu ray movie is to watch it in 1080 isn't? will all the features in it...

   Re: redbrick - 2008-01-07
 » possibly locked like BEATS

....they could lock the movie to individual PSP's like the 'Beats' game. Perhaps connect the PSP with the memory stick with a USB cable.

 » Well...

It's gonna be hacked I'm sure just like the PSP was by Dark_AleX, Blu_AleX, or someone else then everyone will be pirating Blu-Rays. They'll probably even get it running in 1080p somehow. Honestly, this is a bad desicion for Sony to make since Blu-Ray is doing so well right now. They don't want to loose there supporters due to piracy do they? That's why the PSP isn't doing that well, cause all the game developers are too scared to release new games for it due to the extreme ease it takes to pirate those games and run them on it.

 » @Justingraziano

You are half-correct on one statement about someone will hack the Blu-Ray, but the rest of what you said is... ridiculous.

1080p is impossible on a PSP because the PSP only has 480x272 resolution max. So the best a PSP can do is 272p.

As for the piracy issue, it started way back during the old days of video gaming. The main reason why there are few IP's on PSP is because the cost and time constraint. Developing a game for a PSP takes as much as resource as developing a game for a console.

If piracy is the main reason why developers are backing out to make titles, then what can you say about the PC gaming? PC gaming has been and always been the most pirated department of the gaming world. Yet, we can still see games, good games mind you, coming out for the platform.

 » well...

If they want to hack this feature to be able to rip 1080p movies off of a BluRay movie,
They will have to hack the PS3, because the ps3 is the one that is doing the ripping here.

The psp on the other hand, is only recieving data from the PS3. There is nothing the PSP does in this process instead of recieving Data, the resolution the PS3 rips to is set on the PS3.

So this is the same as saying people shouldn't develope bluray drives for in their computer because someone will write a programm to rip them to a HD.

   Re: Vipre77 - 2008-01-08
 » The PS3 won't be ripping anything...

This feature will simply be copying a pre-formatted copy of the film from the blu-ray disc to whatever target device is connected, be it a PSP or laptop or whatever. (i.e.: The film will come pre-ripped and stored on the BD-ROM. The PS3 just copies this file over.) In last year's CES, Sony showed this feature as well and indicated that they wanted it to export to a variety of mobile devices, not just PSP.

That said, the PSP can handle 720x480 video. The video contained on UMD Video discs is at this resolution. The PSP simply downscales it to fit the 480x272 screen. The higher/original resolution is still used when a PSP Slim is connected to a television and outputting at 480i/p for standard NTSC/ATSC resolution.

Actually I ment get the movies ripped in 1080p so they could be copied to another device from the Memory Stick (like a PC, Mac, or even another PS3) then viewed in 1080p. And the PSP IS easier to pirate for then the PC. Just think about it. Most PC games require a serial number, online activation, a hacked .exe file and more in order to run without a disk. A noobish pirate isn't going to bother getting all these for every game he/she wants to pirate but on the PSP the hardest part is installing the custom firmware and then...poof! Extremely easy piracy. Just download the game, pop it in the folder, and it runs! No hacks, no nothing. There also often much smaller then PC games which means the pirates with slower connections will download more PSP games then PC games (1.8GB compared to over 8GB in some cases).

 » Thats hella kewl!

Man, thats one of the kewlest ideas I've seen yet! Being able to port a movie from a blu-ray over to my PSP is awesome!

Also, you don't need 1080 anything to enjoy a movie on a PSP considering the resolution of a PSP screen is like 400x200 (its slightly different, I just dont remember the exact resolutin) so even a 480p sized video is MORE than enuff to enjoy on your PSP. Consumers forget (or dont know) that all "HD" is, is a larger resolution than we've had before. 1080 (which is 1920x1080) looks great on a huge HD tv, but won't look better on a PSP due to it's screen's resolution.

» slim and lite tv out

How about the tv out for the psp slim. The UMD movies look pretty decent on a hdtv with the component cable. If you can view the converted blu-ray movies that way it would be nice.

 » Great Idea For Sure!

For the longest time I wished Sony would have allowed people to do something like this so they wouldn't have to buy two versions of the same movie to get the best of both worlds! I hope they allow you to copy the low res version to the hard drive so you can have your whole movie collection to download via remote play. That would be awesome!

» It won't be that easy to pirate these movies

bet it will be just like the PS1 games from the PS store. It will be specific to the PSP that it is uploaded to. You'll have to register the PSP with your PS3 and the PS3 will create a KEY or Liscense on your PSP so that the content will only play on the PSP that it was intended for. Sony is far from dumb.

   Re: Sembazuru - 2008-01-08
 » Agreed

I expect Sony to key or DRM the PSP video file to the PSP that is linked to the PS3 that ripped/copied the video file. I just hope that I'm not tied to the PS3 for archiving and re-installing the files to my PSP. I would like to store the PSP video files to an external HDD through my laptop so when I'm travelling I can access my collection where ever I am. (And because the video file is keyed, Sony doesn't have to worry about not knowing me me well enough to know that I wouldn't put the files up on bittorent.)

 » my opinion...

why pirate a 25(or 50) gig movie? such a waste of time. well if a low-res movie, ripped from the ps3 to psp is a gig, then what is the size of an HD(1080p) movie, 10 gig? and like the person above me said, Sony have enough info about me or us because its keyed. After all Sony isn't that dumb.
