Sony PlayStation 2 Slim - Image 1Sony's pride, the Sony PlayStation 2 which recently celebrated its 7th anniversary, is still going strong and will even get a new redesigned model. What can only be described as a "compact" Sony PS2 with built-in power supply is expected to be on shelves early 2008 with a US$ 99 price tag.

According to MCV UK, Sony is able to manufacture PS2 units with built-in power supplies at a lower price. After posting 120 million PS2 consoles sold, it looks like Sony is still putting money on the old horse. Giant publishers Eidos, Ubisoft Entertainment, and Atari believe a price-cut should help revitalize sales figures.

 » wtf..

Are they trying to make it smaller than the PSP or something now?

I wouldn't say smaller but rather they're losing the power supply and make it built in instead.

they said compact..
i don't think it can get thinner than 1 in.
Maybe it'll be smaller than the psone... That'd be sweet. They should release a screen for the pstwo. I don't like the third party ones..

» Its not smaller you dip****

Its called cheaper materials. Since they haven't forgotten the PS2 owners are people who doesn't even have a PS2, this makes it easier for them to buy. Plus compact actually means size decrease but not smaller. For it to be smaller it would have to have height, length, width and weight to be decreased. which isn't the case. Please learn the difference between compact and small. Perhaps your school is slow on the education. Damn the school system is failing it seems.

i dont mind using the AC/DC adaptor as long as the new model looks cool like the old sony cd walkmans.
a very thin and light ps2 would be awesome,
and since its so small, have the sixaxis/dualshock3 as its main controller too. so the unit can do without the old ps2 controller port. just USB for charging and or other peripherals.
wifi is also a plus.

ps, i will totally buy 1 even if a already have a ps2.
and even if they price it at 150-200$.

oh and also make an extra compatible LCD monitor addon
5"-12" screen 480i,480p,1080i(scaled) resolution, i will also buy it for around 200$.

every kid will also want those of what i mentioned SONY.
hint hint

I think it would be great if they could make some inbuilt upscaling system for the games like the PS3.

Probably yes in the future, but dont forget tha the ps3 has a built in power supply. Its current size also helps the console to control its heat better as well.

So I would personaly never buy a smaller version just to be sure it stays cool all the time unless the new smaller version prove's to be reliable..

They should include a Blu-Ray player in it, haha. I kid, I kid.

Wow I might care if I already didn't have 3 PS2s. I like the old style ones the best because they don't overheat and have the motorized tray. I think the new slim PS2s are made too cheaply and are somewhat unreliable.

I guess this would be a good complement for 40gb PS3 owners to play PS2 games that don't have a PS2 already.

why are they still wasting their time with the ps2? they have already redesigned it. they should focus more on the ps3...

   Re: kitenai - 2007-11-04
 » think about it.

i mean come on, the PS3 will soon stop playing PS2 and PS1 games. There are literally thousands of games in the library that will be unusable soon. Also there are still plenty of people who never got around to getting one believe it or not and not everyone is willing to shell 300-500 dollars to play some video games(ie xbox360 and ps3). the old system still has alot of life in it IMO and to think otherwise is just an uneducated guess.

 » Kitenai is right...

Even though they have sold 100+ million units, there are billions of people in the world....of course videogames are not a priority to most people and even $100 maybe too much.....if they can make ps2 and sell it for 100 and under, even more people would buy it...

 » actually

The 40gb PS3 still plays PS1 games
