PlayStation 3 - Image 1It's official: PS3 units are going to sell at US$ 499 in North America. After countless of rumors all over the net, mysterious ads sent in advanced, and claims that cheaper units went off the shelves, Sony finally gave word that they'll be cutting a hundred bucks off the 60GB model. "This news does not affect any other PS3 territory," said Dave Karakker, Sony Computer Entertainment America.

In addition, the 80GB PS3 models previously released in Korea are now flying over to the US. At US$ 599, the package will come with a copy of MotorStorm.

Price cut on the 60GB version will be effective come July 10, while the units with bigger hard drives will be shipping in August. An anonymous Circuit City manager claims that the price cut will take place on July 12, so some retail outlets might be a few days behind.

i waste a hundread on the 6o gb in january well i dont really need a million gbs honesly i had da ps3 60 gb for 6 months now and only used 3 gbs i think it will take years 2 use all 60 so iz a waste but good price drop just hope they dont change the controllers now

So really there was no price drop, just upgraded hard drives and no more PS3s with less capabilities. Even though it's not really like a price drop, I'm still happy that they did this. I find this in no way a move in the wrong direction.

 » ???

How can it not be a price drop? Before you had to pay 600 bucks for the 6gb now you only have to pay 500. Sounds to me like a price drop. To me the new model its a waste of money. Only 20 mor gb and a game that in a few months will cost 19.99? But anyways im still happy sony did this.

$100 price drop for the 60gb model - Good.

(it would atleast stop those Americans from complaining to some extent... i don't really know why they are the ones who always complain when they're having it easy compaired to other teritories)

the 80gb model??? not necessary... borders on being a bad idea even.

is that the americans complain so bad about the ps3's $600 price tag, but line up all night for a $600 iphone and say thats a buy.... hahaha.

the 80GB is a limited edition or something.

   Re: Folding Junkie! - 2007-07-09
 » Quixand!

I am one American that has never complained about what he spent to purchase his PS3! Still after they announce a price drop 4 months after after I spent my $600 + tax I have no regrets about my purchase.

I have no reason to feel bad about it. I felt totally secure about my decision to purchase an PS3 well before I went to the store to get it. I already knew that a was investing in a piece of equipment that was worth my money and then some.

Right now I think that this decision is a good one by Sony. They stand to lose even more money in the short term but in the long run installed base is more important and this will only give the PS3 a boost in sales.

Right now the only way that I would be sorry is if I had spent my money on another console and could have purchased a $500 PS3 instead. BD, streaming media over wifi, and great games for $500. You can't help but feel good about spending that much for what you will get with your purchase!

For people that were going to buy the 60gb PS3 ($599), now if they want can get a 80gb one for ($599), So its not a bad deal for people that have the $ for it.

Seems like a weak response to the whole lure of Apple TV / Live (+huge elite HD) thing. Great drop though... Soon I will have my PS3...

ps: I suppose that's why they said "no 80g for america right now" lol. It's because they wanted us to be WOW! OHHHH YEAHHH!! I'LL GET ONE!!

pps: x360 ELITE is prices around the same, is this a joke? I already bought an x360 and returned it since some red light was kinda boring(one), but I won't miss this offer, hell no!!! I've put the screen (link) as my wallpaper so I won't forget! :D

HAVE FUN! mouhahaa (and if you like x360 more, they're priced 399$ now, so M$ AND sony fanboys will cry of joice, and I'll buy a ps3 with a smile in my face :D (but not as much joy as the 2 kids who were opening their holiday gift... a nintendo64... if you don't understand, search youtube, lol).

People this price drop in the 60GB is just what Sony needed. Its already been rumored that the 80GB PS3 will be shipping with a SixAxis Rumble controller. This explains all the delays in game developing for the PS3. GO FIGURE! Anyways, WOOOOOOOOOOOOOT Price Cut Baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thats why sony rules

   Re: WiiCool - 2007-07-09
» so what about old controllers

I hope they have a trade in deal with the old controllers, I already think they are retards for not including rumble...how many times...the price should be 450 for the 60gb. I do appreciate the price cut, but that still too much.
   by Annony - 2007-07-08
 » Thank God...

Thank God they're not bundling it with that Golf game like in Japan... ack.

Still, if Sony wanted to play their cards better, they should have shipped the 80Gig with 'Resistance:FoM' rather than Motorstorm. Not that Motorstorm is a bad game, but why not package the system with the most popular and highest rated title? It's probably sold a half-million copies already, so, financially, it'd also be the safest game to 'give away'.

Still, the only way I can 8!tch about this news is the fact that I got my new PS3 2 weeks ago...
"PWNED by a whole Benjamin"

   Re: PWNER (Unregistered) - 2007-07-08
 » Gotta disagree

I dig R:FoM, but Shooters don't have such a widespread audience. Yeah, the audience is huge, but packing the PS3's with "M" rated games might be a double-edged sword (especially with what's going on in Congress). Packing an "M" rated game won't have the widespread appeal of a (somewhat) family-safer "T" game.

Plus, Motorstorm uses the SixAxis much better than Resistance does, so I imagine that's one point Sony wants to drive at consumers.

Either way, sorry to hear about the 2 week thing, but there's still the free 5 Blu-Ray movies you can cash out on:

   Re: whoelse (Unregistered) - 2007-07-09

with the rumble sixaxis (fingers crossed) they can simply update motorstorm again to use rumble.

See I told you that it was true.

Now you believe me? LOL

Sweet now PS3 gonna outsale the Wii. By the way, I bought a Wii to turn around and sale and ended up trying it out to see what the hype was about. I was not impressed in the least little bit. Very cumbersome controls and game play was awkward. It would take some getting used to for sure.

So for me, I am very dissapointed in Nintendo. It is only a fad right now and I believe in the next 2 years to come, Nintendo will fade away one again and the battle between XBox and PS3 will continue.

Good job Sony. A very good move.

   Re: WiiCool - 2007-07-09
 » stupid

Very pointless comment... it reminds me of the other people saying Wii was a fad back when it sold 2 million in a lonth... The Wii is not a fad, it could have been, but it is not. I would say that PS3 controls are more "cumbersome" than Wii controls, but what really makes that comment stupid is that you are insinuating that a console that costs 2x as much will suddenly sell much faster than the console reaching nearly 10 million... I like different aspects of each console...but I truly think the Wii will sell the most. This is not a fanboy opinion, but the opinion of an averge person.

shut up....ps3 is alright but 360 and wii are waayy better...wii is much better than ps3 and who cares if ps3 got a price cut ill bet its not even going to sell 100 console...sooooo shhhhh

   Re: Eclipze_ (Unregistered) - 2007-07-09
 » Controlls

The PS3 has motion sensing like the Wii, with normal controls (for those thar dont like motion sensing) and soon rumble like the 360... idk but the controller is already on top in my eyes.

   Re: Eclipze_ (Unregistered) - 2007-07-09
 » The wii

My system needs 4 things
1. Good graphics (This is NEXT GEN u need it)
2. Good online (is pretty close to 360 now)
3. Good storylines in games (Mgs4, heavenly sword, n not wii sports)
4. Good controls (PS3 controller has everything the wii has just not rumble) soon to come.
With the wii you get what you pay for... a cheap system.

   Re: ... (Unregistered) - 2007-07-16
 » ...

1. You act as though the Wii has the graphical capabilities of a rock.

2. The Online Wii Games have yet to come out. Wait until Brawl comes out and then talk to me. And the Wii can use wireless G (or is it B?) straight out of the box.

3. Why would you expect a good storyline in a sports game, do you think before you type?

4. PS3 does not even compare. tilting it side to side is no where near the Wii. And you can be a lazy fatass and play the Wii.

It's interesting now because the elite is only $20 cheaper than the 60gb ps3. It has a bigger HDD, but nothing else. I rather have a bluray player than an unnessary 120gb hdd.

To his biased comment, "story of the XBOX".

Which world do you live in Buddy? As of this moment, yes, it would seem as if the 360 has won, but all you have to remember is, nothing is set in stone. Hell, 2 years ago, would you have thought that an SCEA product would be struggling at launch while the 360 enjoys unqualified, if undeserved, success?

So, enjoy your 360's transitory success, because nothing is permanent, neither the MS console, nor the Sony console and not the Nintendo console.

Huh?
That's absolutely insane, in UK I can't afford it for £425 ($855), it's ridiculous. for $499, it's $355 cheaper in the US than in the UK, and we don't get a choice about which model to buy... there are still 20GB floating around the US market but we only get 60GB for more money I have to spare.

Yes, same in sweden, if your lucky you can find it for $825 and thats it.. we want pricecut and motorstorm bundle to!!!! but i guess we have to wait another 6 month or so, thats okay sony take your time i'm in no hurry..

They are expected to annoucing pricing changes for other regions in another day or two. Although it will probably still be higher than the US model.
