While it's still uncertain if the Microsoft Xbox 360 will get DivX support, it's now confirmed that the Xbox 360's rival, Sony's PlayStation 3, will be integrated with DivX technology. DivX Inc. just announced that they are now currently working on certifying the PS3 for DivX. This is to ensure good quality video playback on Sony's next-gen console.

The DivX support for the PS3 will be installed to the console units on a later software update, so better make sure you install the next firmware update to take advantage of the added DivX support. Not only will DivX be used in playing media, it will also be used in gaming technology. In fact, DivX Inc. already updated PS3's SDK (Software Development Kit) to let game developers use DivX's decoder in PS3 software.

 » nice

i think the ps3 has enough power to allow it to play all fine formats. this conversion crap sucks. they should make it like VLC player. free yet owning all others.

Glad sony listen to costomers requests.
I filled in the online partition for this feature 6 months ago. Surprised how quickly they have implimented this.

Nice you care Sony!

Nice you listen Sony!!!!!!

Ps what the hell has happend to all the linux support for ps3? We still need access to graphics hardware under linux. Hope your listening Sony. Why don`t sony make a linux OS that is easy to use and better than windows. I would be willing to pay for a Good OS for the PC side of things. This would make Ps3 the king of all consoles! Sony it can`t be that hard all ps3 hardware the same so a custom OS would be perfect and cheaply made. They could sell the OS for the price of a game and it sure can`t be any harder than making a game can it?

 » good

This really good.. it would be nice if they added support for formats like ogg and ogm and mkv later on.

» YOU CAN PLAY DIVX NOW!

But I am able to play divx right now on my PS3, I download movies from the internet and simply use NeroHome to stream the movies over to my PS3 and it works just fine.

 » sweet!

that is awesome news!... now all we need, from a video playback standpoint, is WMV and AVI support, then I can die happy!

   Re: Oracle - 2007-11-15
 » Don't expect WMV support

WMV is a MS format remember? not that there's anything good out in WMV anyway

But Avi support will be in the next update, well to be exact it already is in 2.0. Remember AVI is just a container format, not a codec

Yes this is very good news. I can't wait to see this out on the coming firmware updates. Also this is very good news for people who use Divx for adult Entertainment *wink wink*

Anyway great.
