Consoles Vs. PC

Many gamers out there have chosen the PC as their weapon of choice. After all, its difference from a console is undeniable: customizable controls, better graphics, faster loading times, and exciting multiplayer gaming. But then if that's the case, then why do console games still outsell PC games by 5:1? Bill Selles of DPAD tries to answer this question.

In his analysis, he has pointed out many factors that may have contributed to the popularity of console games over the years. For example, the fact that a console cannot be upgraded may be seen as a hindrance by some, but as a blessing by others. A PC can be configured with a powerful processor, gigabytes worth of RAM and a stunning video card, but then again, not a few have experienced the time when a new game is released and you discover that compared to its system requirements, your PC build which once seemed top-of-the-line, now looks prehistoric. So we trek off to the PC shop for that ultimate gaming video card. However, with console games, one doesn't have to worry about this since the game has been especially developed for the console that you already own. There's no need to cross your fingers that its graphics engine doesn't eat up all your memory and freeze your system. No more fiddling with the settings just so your game would run sans lag.

Another thing to factor in would be the cost involved. With a PC, once your system can't handle the latest game system requirements anymore, the ultimate video card that you need to buy would also most likely have the ultimate price tag. And just how many of us would be willing to pay $500 for a piece of hardware just so we could enjoy the flawless graphics and eye candy that game developers have promised? With a console, however, you buy the console, buy some peripherals, an extra controller, a memory card and some other small things maybe, and that's it. The rest of your money could go towards buying the games themselves.

A console has also been considered as "friendlier" upon set-up. You just take it out of the box, plug things where they belong, pop in a disc, and you're up and running. Because of this, new players, or people who have never tried gaming before can afford to try their hand at it and they would be less afraid or intimidated of picking up that controller; again, unlike a PC wherein a degree of advanced technical know-how may be required.

And lastly, there's the social factor. PC gamers have often been wrongly typecasted and associated with the image of a group of nerdy kids in a basement with PC's networked for a LAN party. It's also difficult for group play to happen since every participant will be required to have his own unit. For others to watch someone else play, others would have to be, more often than not, standing behind the person at the keyboard, something which is reminiscent of a group huddling by the warmth of the fire. On the other hand, the image of a player sitting on a couch in the living room, controller in hand and surrounded by friends seemed to have cast a totally different light on console enthusiasts. His or her friends could easily join in as well, just by picking up the spare controller.

All in all, one can already assume that this debate is far from ever seeing an end since PC gamers would most likely accuse console lovers as simpletons, while console lovers retaliate by calling the other party elitists. But in this age that consoles are starting to be able to do things that PCs are capable of, who knows?

Personally, however, it is quite possible to have the best of both worlds especially since many people, including myself, have attested to the convenience of owning both a PC and a console.

» Love my PC, but console is much simpler

A former dedicated, die-hard PC gamer for 20 years, I just switched from PC to my Xbox 360. I just got fed up with the constant hardware and software upgrades, the patch downloading, the O/S frustrations and errors and watching game software eat up my comupter's hard disk.

Sure, my 360 has it's quirks too... But ultimately the 120" screen projected on my wall, the dolby surround sound through my stereo system , the sofa and beer, and having just a controller in my hand sure gets comfy compared to hunching over my computer desk while playing. You can do that on a PC sure, but what a pain. =S

Sorry PC, but its RTSes for you nowadays - when I have the urge. Really, BFME2 works just nicely on the 360 so I'm not even sure about that anymore.

Maybe Vista will change all of that - but I don't know.

Also - $400 for my 360 is about the cost of my video card upgrades every 1-2 years. I think the console will save me more money in the long run. ^^

Console FTW!!!!

FPS and RTS are the only games I play on my PC these days - racing, platforms etc. are for my consoles. Probably going to be like that for a long time (unless the Wii changes that - Red Steel and CoD3 are looking good).

To 2# - it means "For The Win" (remember, Google's your friend).

The PC was never meant competed with the consoles , the PC is made to work with and the the consoles to play . And that how it was during the 80s and most of the 90s when only enthusiats used their computers to play , but then hardware became pretty cheap and more and more ordinary people started to play on their computers . This was of course seen by the hardware industri who started to created high-end stuff that was made for gaming , and that gave the PC users a more technological superior gaming exprience that drew even more people to it . I think few people during the days of the SNES and PSX thougt that the PC gaming market would grow so big as it is today .

 » Lmfao

This is dumber then heck. Pcs will always haves gameing. No they was'nt meant for it at first... but once video cards and games start being made for pcs... it just gos on and on.

My point is... what ya think a console is made out of!
It use parts that you fine in a pc and for the other stuff that it dont use in a pc but a console gots... is just ideas they got and made by know what a pc already haves and other stuff for like tvs/hdtvs and stuff, lol.

Really... if it was'nt for pcs there would be no gameing... and even if there was... the graphics would be far behind and suck big time even today if games was just made by console after console comeing out.

I say that because of the fact new video cards comes out on pcs every 6 months or so and that why when a console is 4 to 6 yrs. old the graphics for the new console gonna own alot more then what it would because of it will already know what the best in pcs are and when use the best or get next better stuff then a pc gots for the next console.

What really keep consoles going and I mean just for the one part why... is for new video cards and cpus comeing out all the time and other stuff in pcs... but a new console wil ltake it to the next gen and get there stuff better then the latest stuff for a pc or for sometime depending on what console it is and what it gots in it.

And if it was'nt for nvidia you would,nt even see a PS3... maybe I dont know... or I bet you would'nt see it with those outstanding graphics without them makeing RSX for PS3.

Then you would'nt see PS3 because it's other better next gen pc parts I would say in it and other things like hdmi 1.3 and stuff.

What consoles try to do is and for now on is to be better then pcs when they frst come out and then see how long that lasts.

They do that by useing the latest or next gen in the works better graphics that will be use or made by nvidia/ati for a gpu for a console.

If nvidia and ati was'nt here... I dont know if PS3 and xbox360 would be here... and if they was... I bet the graphics would'nt be all that great.

New consoles that come out always get next gen stuff now betetr then pcs like if a pc haves 512mb (just sayin) a next gen console owuld top it with 1024mb.

Just a ton of diff stuff like that and also make there own stuff or next gen pc stuff and work on it and make it better to do this and that and run faster, more power, less heat, and stuff, lol.

A other part is cpus... PS3 got Cell... that owns all, lol.
Why? Moshly because of ibm, lol. And There would'nt even be a thing called a cpu if it was'nt for pcs.

That a other way consoles do when there next gen console comes out. Like look at all the pc cpus then say hmm I want a better one for a next gen console, lol.

Lots of diff stuff like that. If pc gameing died... all gameing would die. And if not... then the graphics anit gonna jump to next gen after next gen and look so outstanding when that time comes for a next gen console because no pc video cards being made.

So makeing a new gpu for next gen consoles only in 6 yrs. or so is not gonna be outstanding as it would be if there was video cards being made for pcs that get better and better all the time.

You sould totally know what I am trying to say here, lol.
I also say pc gameing will never die... and I dont think console gameing will ever die.

It just gonna get better and better for pcs and consoles.
Just like alot of other tech stuff, lol.

 » For got to say...

But consoles in ALOT of ways are much and way better for games then a computer is. In ALOT of ways and reasons why.

But I wont go into that, lol. But then again consoles are better for alot of other too like movies and a ton of other stuff and media stuff.

For whatever a console can do that a pc can do a console can do it much and way better and faster, lol.

Consoles can be more powerful and be more faster and less heated then a pc can be also.

I talk to much and I'm sorry lol and I dont want to go into detail because I talked about some or most of it on this web site on a diff news for something, lol.

I remember a neighbor of mine telling me that PC was better than a console and that console games looked cheap. One day he came to my house when I barely got my Dreamcast and his mind changed real fast. He wanted to play. Now with Playstation 3, wii, and xbox 360, the line is blurred evermore.

I'd agree that Consoles are great for friends to play together, but I definately cannot say that they outweight PCs in every way. For PCs, games never get out of date. It's nice backwards compatibility is there, but not cross-console, unforunately. I'm all about customizing my games, that's something you will never be able to do in a console. I mean come on.. Warcraft-flavored CS, or deathmatch. Look at all the mods people have made for games, those couldn't happen on a console. Nevertheless, games like World of Warcraft will never happen on a console, there's too much customized things and too many controls, it simply wouldn't be possible to keep the gameplay even similar. For people that just like to play games as they are, then consoles are your friends. But I absolutely guarentee you the exact same game with a keyboard and mouse given to a hardcore PC gamer will never be defeated by a controller. There is simply no way to argue that a controller is faster than a mouse. Controllers use sensitivity or steady movement. You move the joystick to the left, and it turns you at a rate. With a mouse, you can learn exactly how far left you need to move the mouse and can do so in an instant. They both have their advantages and disadvantages, and I think this is one of the best articles regarding Consoles vs. PC games arguments I've ever read.

My 2 cents..

» The two are just different business models.

That's really the only difference. People always make a huge deal about the differences, but at the end of the day your console is still a pc.

What is different about these two types of computers is the business models that are involved:

Pcs can be upgraded, and they have a mouse and keyboard. The user also sits right up next to them and the screens they use are generally much higher rezolution than the televisions gamers use to view console games. But above all, computers can be upgraded.

This is not a good thing for developers already working on a game. Putting otu content for the PC is like hitting a moving target. Another major factor that makes development harder for desktops is the variation between different users machines. So PC dev is actually more like aiming at a moving spectrum. You have to cover the lowest and highest common denominators.

Consoles were born from a want to have unified hardware in homes to make it easier for developers. There is no moving target. You know exactly what the box is capable of an exactly what your competitors are capable of producing. There isnt any variation in hardware (usually) and therefore less hassle. The inherant downside is that those specs dont change for many years. That can be kind of frustrating sometimes, but ask any developer, and they'll tell you that everytime a new console is released it causes some mild chaos in the studio while adjusting.

So there ya go. they really arent very different at all. The only difference is, one upgrades faster than the other. just remember- its really all just business.

» As much as I love PC gaming, gaming on the PC is going the way of the DODO

With the power of consoles now surpassing what PC offers and since these machines are custom made just for gaming, the PC as a gaming platform is dying indeed. (This might not seem like it because Devs have more experience on current PC architectures and games might look better for now but in the very near future the PC will not be able to compete)

Having to upgrade every time a new game comes out is a pain in the Arse. I remember when I bought GTA III for my PC, It looked like crap and the slow down was unbearable. I decided to buy a new Video Card ($300 just for that one game!!) and the game improved graphically quite a bit but the slowdown was still there and it hampered the gameplay. $300 down the drain!

If you noticed PC only games are now moving to consoles. FPS, MMORPGs for example. RTS are probably the only ones left but with the PS3 allowing keyboard and mouse natively, It will not be long before this is also done on home consoles.

The average person uses their PCs for checking email, blogging =), gaming, word processing, web browsing. With the PS3 allowing this and having Linux pre-installed you could in theory replace the PC for the most common things. Of course if your a graphic designer or a software developer, nothing is going to replace your PC but for the mass market audience that doesn't need all that and now has an HDTV that can display text clearly (unlike SDTVs) this is a dream come true for many. It will save consumers tons of money.

MS doesn't want your console to replace your PC because they own the PC market but I think there's going to be a great movement in that direction with the PS3. I see Hardcore PC gaming dying off, not casual games like spore and flash games, in 4-5 years.

   by TheProfessor - 2006-09-05
» BTW custom interfaces can work on consoles,

You can have MODs on console games. MS just hasn't allowed them in 360 games for now. There is nothing in this next generation of consoles stopping MODs from being done. Unreal Tourney 2007 developers actually mentioned that they are planning on this and even seeing how they can make PC mods work on the console counterpart.

Furthermore, even though a control pad will always be an integral part of console gaming since it lends itself better for a bigger range of games, Keyboard and mouse support is not far off. Scrivener a Sony insider has already mentioned that PS3 will have native keyboard and mouse support. You can actually take your USB Keyboard and Mouse and plug it in to the PS3. I don't think many games will allow gameplay through a Keyboard and mouse interface but the option is there.

Also rumors from EGM came out that Blizzard is working on WOW for the PS3. Makes sense since they are hiring console developers for a long while now.

» Some contributing factors that are not covered in this article...

When using a console system, pirating games is more difficult and in most cases requires certain types of equipment that can only be purchased online.
When using a PC, games can be pirated more easily using free software without purchasing any extra equipment.

When using a console system, there is not much free content available (without buying the equipment to run homebrew, of course).
When using a pc, there is a hell of a lot of free content available, some of which rivals a number of PC games.

When using a console system, you are usually limited to the content that is sold in stores at regular prices. There are not many games sold at yard sales and most sales end up on statistical records after each sale.
When using a pc, one can always go to yard sales and get a good number of used games for $1 or less. Sure, these games are not as good as the newer games, but for $1 you lose far less if the game sucks or does not work. These never end up on any statistical records.

» #12 - As long as we have PCs in our homes...PC gaming is here to stay!

>"As much as I love PC gaming, gaming on the PC is going the way of the DODO"

Nope, PC gaming will be here and still going strong 5 years from now. It's kind tiring now but everything you've said I have read for over 10 years now, with gamers absolutely convinced that PC gaming is dying and listing reasons why.

It's the same thing said every console generation ("Oh but this time it's different" they say). :)

Hence I'll repeat today what I said over 10 years ago when the Playstation was released, and 5-6 years ago when the PS2 and XBox were released, that is, in 5-6 years time when a new generation of consoles are released, gamers will once again compare the consoles to the PC and proclaim that PC gaming is dying.

   by killfox (Unregistered) - 2006-09-05
 » Yeah right.

PC is going know where. Yeah you may buy new hardware a lot. But thats because PC are always getting better and better. Consoles dont do that. They get what they get and devs have to deal with what they get. PC devs are never really limited with what they can do and how much they can put out in a game. With PC its you pay what you get for and then some if you know how to overclock your GPU and CPU while still keeping it cool. PC is very cool becuase it always feels good to get that new graphics card or CPU. Building a PC is so much fun. Because you feel like what you did made it better. Also i think upgrading is cool because it keeps you interested. I know alot of people might think im like a big hermit for saying this but im not. Im not a fanboy at all. I have a 360. I plan i getting a PS3 at launch. I plan on buying a wii. I love consoles. PS get a *****ing job you worthles pieces of *****.

Ok consoles are so innovated but with out PC you wouldn’t have themgamecube uses ati, xbox uses nvidia, xbox 360 uses ati, ps3 uses nvidia their pc dedicated for games that’s it.
Now console people can play online download updates for their games and download game demos
Pc gamers have been doing this for sometime now.
Consoles will always follow in the pc game footsteps

Don’t get me wrong im not dissing them I think the xbox 360 is a great system. And ps3 will be great too.
Much cheaper keeping up with the consoles than pc
Shell out 500-600 dollars on a video card or up too $2000 or more on a quad sli gaming system. For non-pc users that’s running 4 graphic cards as one in one PC

"Also rumors from EGM came out that Blizzard is working on WOW for the PS3. Makes sense since they are hiring console developers for a long while now."

Yes, Blizzard has announced 4 games they are releasing for consoles (thats what those devs are for). Then after that they had a press conference stating that World of Warcraft cannot be made for a console. Also, I'm not talking about professional mods. It's great that the Unreal team is doing that, but I want to see fanboys and hobbyists make mods, they are always better. And there's simply no *safe* way to allow that much customization on a console. I don't see M$ allowing it anytime soon (or maybe by charging you $99/year and limited your development to not modify retail games, because that can be considered cheating..), and I'm sure Sony isn't going to let you hack into retail games through their Linux-flavored OS either. It all screams hacks, pirating, and cheaters. I'll give you an example. M$ couple easily allow people to make Halo 2 maps, people have been doing that for a while, and are very good at it. But look at what that has opened up? More cheats than I can even type.

» The line between PCs and Consoles is .....

the price.

Not many people can afford to buy consoles and less then that can afford to buy a PC for games.

PCs beat consoles in every shape and form. EVery type of gameplay on a console can be identical on a PC. EVERY TYPE. All you need is one simple addition to your PC, a gamepad.

Why are PCs better.
Graphics
Sound
Controls
Customization
Games.

PC games are always of higher quality then Console games. There hasnt been a Console game in its history thats as well made as games like Half-life. PC games set the standard for console games. There wont be a console game with the same graphics and quality as PC games ever. Because the fact that PC video cards will get better every 6 months.

You can buy a 600 PS3. a 400 Xbox360. But neither will ever be on par with PCs.

   by hush404 - 2006-09-05
 » IT's a not brainer

Can you immagine passing up God of War, Mario (any Mario) and Ninja Gaiden just because you think consoles are "for kids" or PC's are "supperior in power" thus you don't go near consoles.... that's just foolishness and you're really cutting your self short of amazing gaming.

I believe that the PC does have strong points and a PC is really the best place to playFPS/RTS games BUT the cost of purchasing a top of the line PC (in the thousands) and continually upgrading it to continue playing new games is insane when you can be enjoying similar fun on a $200-$600 system.

Also, lets not forget that with this generation of gaming the consoles are able to do so much more then the gaming. Look at the 360 with it's media center features, great online connection, the PS3 with similar features, a browser, blue tooth keyboard & mouse support, the Wii with it's emulation of tons of old games... and lets not forget the amazing graphics the PS3 and 360 can pull off, that kind of beef in a PC would be 3-4 times the price of what the highend PS3 costs.

PC games will NEVER have the veriaty of console games, (adventure, action, beat em up, RPG, etc...) and the games are the most important thing to a gamer, right? so console win me, despite the acuracy of mice and keyboard, i'm sure you can hook a keyboard and mice to the next gen consoles, so problem solved for gamers who prefer mouse and keyboard, bottom line, more veriaty of games wins.

Consoles will definitely take a large share of gamers away from PC (since the console is so cheap and consoles have so many more games), but PC gaming is undoubtedly here to stay. If you love gaming and money isn't an object when it comes to it, you can buy a PC that destroys any console in every possible way.

I'm actually a big console fan and have given up on PC gaming for awhile (until I build my Vista machine, my current is a Gateway I got for $1200 last year and it already can't run Oblivion very well) because of constantly having to upgrade and all the errors and incompatibility problems you run into. But you're the blindest mofo in the world if you can't see that PC gaming will never die.

   by Hmm (Unregistered) - 2006-09-05

Of Course PC Gaming will never die its just that Consoles are only done with one idea gaming no Winzip and crap just gaming but PC lets it self down with the constant Upgrading and Expensive Hardware to Pass X360 and PS3 you would have to spend at least 5000-10000 Dollars which is dumb

» I know this is crazy but...

Sure I like consoles, but I think that if I wasn't spending money on upgrading my PC, I am quite sure that I would have purchased a car by now and exuded some more poisonous gases into the environment - which boils down to maybe PCs are indirectly better for the environment? Also, having less money to spend - because I spent it all on upgrades - I found that I ended up walking a lot more because you don't have a car - and for any hardcore gamer, this is crucial - imagine being a healthy hardcore gamer, eh? Now how refreshing is that?
Oh and by the way, if you feel that there is a shortage of smart pc game gear, you must check out da gadgets at www.cybersnipa. com - not only do they improve your gaming performance, but they are well made and price friendly!
