Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli - Image 1Even while the next-gen race currently going on right now has yet to reach its peak, Crytek is already preparing for the next cycle. Speaking at the Games Convention Asia, Cevat Yerli talked about their proprietary technology, the CryEngine, as well as their predictions as to when the next round of consoles race will begin.

Said Yerli, because the consoles provide a more fixed window of constraints than the PC hardware for the developers, they have to start designing for the future as early as now. Noting that the GPUs and CPUs "are on a collision course", it thus becomes important for technology producers and game developers alike to have an informed decision for the development of new products.

"The risk of 'uncanny valley for content is increased. As the more realistic graphics become the animation may not adapt," he said. Furthermore, "Games will differentiate more and more in artistic styles, physics, and AI, to be different."

As for his predictions, he said that the next wave of consoles will probably be out in about three or four years. "Sony knows but they wouldn't tell us," Yerli revealed. "But our estimate is 2011, or 2012." As for Microsoft, he says they'll most likely release another Xbox a year earlier than Sony.

"The future, in our terms, starts next year. Next year we start researching our 2012 engine," he further disclosed. More interesting to note, though, is this statement of his: "Frankly we are lining ourselves to the PS4." And although Sony has not given them full details on their new baby, he recognizes it as a "driving beacon" for Crytek. "That's probably the most important information that our company is missing."

A PlayStation 4, you say? Well then if that's the case, Sony's got only but a few years left to really prove what their PlayStation 3 has to offer. With all the talks on how big the potential for this system is, it's time they actually start fulfilling them, don't you think?

» The new xbox will come out sooner than that.

The dvd drive on the 360 will force them to come out with a new system within 3 years. Games keep getting bigger which means more storage space is needed on a disk. Otherwise half of the 360s games might need to be multidisked in the future. I am sure Microsoft will milk the 360 for every penny they can though.

 » Agreed

I'd count on either 2010 or 2011 for the next Box. 2009 is too early, 2012 is too late. Unless they add a BD drive, which seems unlikely

 » why

why is everyone STILL calling xbox 360 and ps3 next-gen consoles? they've been out for years now

   Re: DVD_Sandwich - 2008-09-20
 » why, indeed

because everybody's stupid. Every new console generation, the term 'next-gen' is thrown out around the launch of the systems. Generally, it lasts less than a year, but the way things are going, it seems like the term is going to stick the entire generation. I wonder what the next generation consoles are going to be called if everyone is calling current gen, next-gen. stupid...

because the consoles are constantly improving themselves

ps3 atleast, through FW etc, and its getting play tv etc, even though its a seperate piece of hardware

anyway xbox 360, a new one will come out in 2010, i believe

ps3 has a long life infront of it though, i think it will be between 2012-2015 before we see the ps4

anyway this whole no console/ home console/tv console/ one console crap is still meant to come out

but for me that would be *****, i like my playstation i like the way games are handled i dont want to change that

The ps3 is supposed to last 10 years, but that doesn't mean that another system (ps4) won't be coming out before the ps3's lifespan is up. I don't know what year the ps4 will some out but I know it won't be at the end of the ps3's lifespan.

 » next gen

Can't we stop calling the PS3, 360 and Wii next gen now?

Gamecube and Xbox aren't even being manufactured and while PS2 may still be selling it's not about to get any major exclusives

I thought someone awhile ago suggested "new gen" or even current gen or 7th gen.

The PS3 will surely get a Slim edition in 2k9 (and surely white), and the ps2 slim, like the ps1 slim, didn't last long at all. And the ps3/x360 don't have to prove themselves before the next gen start annoncing itself, I mean, the best ps2 games popped around the end of the console, and same for the ps1 (maybe not always the best, but always the most beautiful, like Kingdom Hearts 2 not too far from the end of the ps2).

And since we're only in 2k8, I think we can expect that, in 2k12 (wich is in 3 years and a half), the new models will appear, it's a Dah!) In 2k12, the x360 will have 7 years old and the ps3 6 years old. To date, the ps2 is the longest lasting console, and it lasted around 7 years, AND this time around, sony didn't have an inch of competition. Right now, sony is defending it's leader's title, so they'll try to be faster than M$ or at least around the same time. So they'll need to be faster...

 » i expect as much

for the 360, it needs the storage to expand, so im wondering if the existing models will get the option of an external addon for bluray, which i suspect will be needing an update to use for gaming, as well as a new verson with a internal bluray drive!!

if they don't allow their existing consumer base allow to expand on their existing consoles, they are shooting themselves in the foot!!

hence why i went for the ps3 in the first place!
