Death is not the end, it seems, for Heavy Rain. A Videogaming247 report takes note of one feature of Heavy Rain that Quantic Dream's David Cage mentioned: apparently, the game's main plot will continue even if the main character dies.

Said Cage of the game,

I can’t really tell you too much about what the story’s about or how it’s going to work with the characters, all I can tell you that your character - the main character - can die, and the story will continue.

Cage continued by saying that the game wouldn't go into a side story if the main character dies during your game. "You can continue to play, without this character, of course," he notes.

Heavy Rain is certainly looking to be an interesting take on adventure games. If their treatment of this new game mechanic comes off well, Heavy Rain could prove to be a force to be reckoned with in the gaming market. We'll find out how well it does when the game comes out in 2009.
