Little more than a month ago, a grad student created a popular Head Tracking program on the Nintendo Wii. Using the Wiimote, he was able to create a virtual environment on his TV screen, creating an illusion of depth and space with perspective to your field of vision.

Inspired by the idea, programmer Thomas Miller set out to do something similar on the PlayStation 3. Using the PlayStation Dev Kit he created his own Desktop VR program that uses the PlayStation Eye in place of the Wiimote.

Check out the video to see how the program works. At the later part of the video, Miller also remarks that he will be releasing the source code on the PlayStation 3 developer's network, so watch out for it if you're an aspiring programmer.

Even though this is nice, just like the guy who made the program for the Wii, do you think it will be looked at by the actual devs and seek him out to use this technology in the PS3? If so, this could mean a new edge in gaming, for example an FPS, where you can shift your field of vision by moving your head. Sadly alas, you usually don't see innovations like these used in games, unless in homebrew.

I would want to see this put into a game, Hopefully it'll make its way to one of the developers eyes and we can see this put to the test.

When I saw this one the jonny lee website I was WOW, and I though that a wii would be worth getting when games with this pop, but now that it's working on ps3, lol. :D

I hope we'll see downloadable games that uses this feature :D. And I hope we'll also see, in near future, some of this in a real game too :D

That's exactly what gaming should be like. Imagine the possibilities!

hmm.....

I don't think this is so good...
This has a great disadvantage over the Wii:
Like the guy said in the video, you need a self-made Infrared pointer. For developers this is cool, though. They could make great games with it. But here's the disadvantage again. You will need to buy the Infrared pointer then. And I'm pretty sure that IF Sony comes out with something like this, it won't be cheap....

Doesn't matter, does it?
I mean, people bought the stuff for Rock Band, they would be willing to buy a headset to get 3D games...

I'm getting a computer (I want a good one that can handle games). I got about $2000, so which is a good computer?

Computers are built for hardcore gaming--and other stuff too :P
