Devil May Cry 4 PS3 update: 4900MB HDD install, PSN support - Image 1A few members of the NeoGAF forums were able to get hold of the latest copy of Famitsu magazine and learned a couple of exciting details about the PlayStation 3 version of Devil May Cry 4 (also on Xbox 360 and PC).

This latest iteration of the DMC franchise was originally a PS3-exclusive but Capcom ultimately decided to have it as well on other next-gen platforms.

Despite that, it seems that DMC 4 PS3 is given enough attention especially with these features:

  • HDD install is 4900MB (4.9GB).
  • Save files are 3392KB.
  • Some variety of PSN support.
  • 5.1 LPCM audio.
While the save file and audio details are nothing new, we are interested about the rather huge amount of space the HDD install requires. If this turns out to be accurate, then we may be on our way to having a really seamless gameplay experience.

There is still no word regarding the specific features for the Xbox 360 and PC build but we believe that Capcom will soon be keeping all of us posted.

 » WTF?

This is bull*****, 5gb?
If all games did this I could only have 6 games. (i have 30gb space left)
I guess you can delete it once your bored though. AND you can get a bigger hdd

   Re: Yaz - 2007-12-27
 » It's an option Payka

Just like Ridge Racer 7 and Genji (which I mention in my post below), gamers have the option of using 5GB of HDD space to improve the load times.

Not everyone will use it, but those that do will be sacrificing 5GB of space for better load times in the game, which is good compromise imo. :)

 » yeah...

5gb installs must blow....especially if you've gotten the 40gb....

I generally only cycle through 4 games at any one time....but man, having to use 20 gigs of my 30 so that I get decent load times.....no thanx....

I really hope a PS3 in the future comes with a faster blu-ray drive so installing to the HDD is not needed...

 » omg topic for whiners

just dont use the HDD cache thing if you dont have enough space. its not like using it will double the speed or anything that radical.
and the article is frustrating to read, why not just say 5gb hdd cache and 4mb for a save file.

and for the faster bluray drive? there are faster ones available for pc but i doubt sony will change the speed of the one included on the ps3, the console must still meet the least common denominator and proper patents.

 » Well..

According to reviews i've read, installing a game onto the PS3's HDD can do more then lessen load times by 4.....so if they give you the "option" to install, it's not really an option at all, unless you want to waste your life looking at loading screens.......think about it, if the game loaded fine off the blu-ray, why would that "option" even be there ?

Also, they changed the specs of the PSP quite drastically to improve performance, so I don't see why it's not possible with the PS3 as well...

» ??? But surely this is nothing new!

Numerous PS3 titles have offered the option to dump 4-5 GBs of data onto the HDD to improve load times, especially since the Blu-ray drive in the PS3 is slower than the DVD drive in the 360 overall.

RR7 and Genji are two examples;

So DMC4 appears to be another game you can add to the list of PS3 games with this option.

It will be interesting to see how the PS3+HDD load times compare to the 360 version (loading from DVD only). The PS3 version using the HDD should be quicker, but how much quicker is anyone's guess right now.

Still, we'll know the answer to that question soon. :)

WRONG about the blu-ray v DVD load times...if you knew what you were talking baout you would know that blu-ray reads a little bit faster than dvd because it reads at the same speed throughout the whole disc..unlike dvd.

and whats this about having the option to install?! admittedly i don't have RR7 or genji..but with assassins creed, warhawk and resistance you have to install the game data...

   Re: ~~ - 2007-12-27

And games such as NinjaGaidenSigma have a nice 'Install' option in the main menu.

See, some games jsut automaticly install and others present it as an option.

» *Sigh* Please checked your facts FIRST!

If do know what I'm talking about but it's clear you don't!

http://www.blu-ray.com/faq/

The Blu-ray speed in the PS3 is 2x, and being a CAV drive offers a steady 9MB/s (72Mb/s).

The DVD drive in the 360 is 12x "dual layer". Being a CLV drive means the transfer speed is lower on the inner most track than the outer most, giving about 8MB/s on the inner, 16.62MB/s on the outer.

Even when ignoring the fact that devs make sure that the data they want to be read the fastest is on the outer part of the DVD (with data where speed isn't an issue on the inner part of the DVD), DVD 12x dual-layer offers on average 12.3MB/s.

So on average, the DVD drive in the 360 is about 35-40% faster than the Blu-ray drive in the PS3, and when devs organise the data to be on the outer part of the DVD, it's even faster (50% or more).

And this isn't just me throwing around official numbers, numberous devs have spoken about the SLOWER drive in the PS3, hence techniques such as duplication of data across the Blu-ray disk and use of the HDD for game data are some of the methods used to overcome the speed difference.

"and whats this about having the option to install?! admittedly i don't have RR7 or genji..but with assassins creed, warhawk and resistance you have to install the game data..."

And I don't have a PS3 to check all the games which use the HDD, but I do know for a fact that whilst some games may require a HDD install, other which use the HDD in this way offer it as an option!

   Re: Yaz - 2007-12-27
 » Exactly ~~

"See, some games jsut automaticly install and others present it as an option."

That's right, hence gamers like Payka shouldn't get angry over 5GB installed onto the HDD when it hasn't been confirmed to be a requirement, but could simply be an option.

But I'm sure my posts can still be understood. ;)

» Seems that there's a way around that

I mean. Uncharted writes nothing to the HDD and its one of the best looking games for the PS3 if not the best and it has no load times whatsoever. So clearly Naughty Dog knows something no one else knows.

   Re: Yaz - 2007-12-27
 » Not really

There are console games from last gen and the gen before that also had no load times. It all depends on the game and the design decisions taken at the start of developement.

And it's not the HDD (although it can help), since PC games are always installed completely onto the HDD, and yet very few PC games have no load times. :|

   Re: gtauk - 2007-12-27
 » but

did the last gen games with no load times look anywhere near as good as uncharted?

   Re: Yaz - 2007-12-27
» I hope you're joking with that comment gtauk... :)

...because it means absolutely nothing since it could apply to almost any top current gen game on the 360 or PS3, with or without load times!

My comment isn't about Uncharted and how great it looks, but about the fact that games with no load times is nothing new, it's not something Naughty Dog knows that no-one else does, and also no load times doesn't come without compromises, hence it isn't practical to implement for most games.
