Many personalities in the video game industry have expressed their
views on the future of gaming. Some say PC gaming is doomed, some say
consoles will someday merge into one, some say there's a 20% chance
that we are computer simulations.Ok, that last one didn't have anything to do with the subject, but anyway. This new insight comes from John Welch, CEO of PlayFirst, the studio that made Diner Dash. Welch is of the opinion that PC gaming isn't doomed - rather, it's the consoles that have something to worry about: I think the console is going to be over as we knew it previously. They’re expensive to make, there is no real need for them. [...] I think the biggest proof point in the death of consoles in my thesis is the Wii. The most successful, most difficult to acquire console in this generation is at least a generation old in hardware. The advances are in software and peripherals. Why do you need a box for that? If the real expansion is occurring because of what Nintendo has done, why do we even need a console? He argues, though, that it doesn't mean consoles will disappear altogether, since the PC is mostly a computing device, while consoles are successful because they are easy to use, so kids "can't break them easily." While he has a point, it sounds like he just reworded the "one-console" future theory. Related Articles:

ofcourse we dont need consoles, we dont need computers or electricity, all we have to do is live off the fatta the land
anyway its not that consoles are easy its, pc can move too fast at times and can be more expensive than a console (at times)
i simply just dont like having to boot up my pc everytime to play a game, i want to play it in my room on my tv, and cant be bothered hooking a vga lead up to my tv
i dont like the mouse and keyboard even if it is faster
i just dont like pc gaming, i like to have a gaming device, a working device a browsing device and a media device seperate
i just cant be bothered with a pc
also i dont know what other games this guy made, or what he was talking about the wii
anyway oooh diner dash, a 10 yr old could make that game

Well this comeing from anyone related to Diner Dash says it all really.
Now PC gaming isnt bad you can get better graphics at times and better gameplay, but then again most of us dont have thousands to spend on high preformance gaming rigs.
We need consoles so we can enjoy great games without needing to worry about "is my gfx card powerfull enough? do i have enough ram?"
Thats mainly why i use my consoles for gaming, it play's the games and it plays them well.
Doubt anyone is going to listen to this idiot.

» old ps2 commercial
remember that old ps2 commercial where they are advertising ps9-- the one where the dude snorts some crap into his brain and "puts" him into a gaming world? maybe that's what he is talking about. I CANT WAIT! i hope it's backwards compatible.

» Well
If you are talking about the one where they do flips and all that stuff, then no, they werent advertising for future consoles. They were just trying to prove that you can immerse yourself into the console. anyways, ya that was a pretty good commercial.

well said. also, the ps3 gives clues that game consoles might become computers themselves. They have great graphics, and you can hook any modern storage device to one and transfer movies, songs and data.
Also, new consoles give games individual pluses that make them even better playing. ps3 for it's superior graphics and efficient blueray, wii for it's creative controller, and Xbox for it's ability to charge every minute thing almost required for the console and still make millions. (30gb hard drives aren't really that *****in expensive!)
So yea consoles make gaming more efficient and creative and fun.
also, compare playing on a 17" screen to a 36" HDTV!

» Yet another hair brained console opinion.
I'm pretty sure the vast majority of PC installations out there are not hooked up to the living room TV.
PCs are more expensive by far. Seriously, just to keep up with the minimum requiremens of the latest games you have to spend at least $200 in hardware upgrades every year. I know, I've done it!
Sure, PC titles are less expensive, but at least I'm only buying new hardware about every 5 years instead of yearly.

» oh another idiot is trying to show his stupidity
i have a high end pc ( intel extreme ...4750 ati...4gb ram...etc...) and you know what.. i don't use it for playing games i find consoles more acceptable
for hardcore players....imagine that ninja gaiden or NG2 were released on a pc or any of those fast action games can you still play it on a pc or a console ?
for me i will play it on a console rather than playing it on a pc. besides pc's are more expensive and the specifications differs from one to another.
that jerk doesn't even know what he is talking about..
amigo don't even try to say anything about that in the future...idiot.

Until the day everyone's hardware has the same architecture (only ATI or Nvidia, only AMD or Intel) and your gaming experience isn't defined by how much money you throw at your PC, you will always have consoles.
