So the Sony PlayStation 3 can already play DivX videos, right? DivX is taking it one step further: they've announced that their video encoding technology is now available to PS3 game developers. This means that developers can now create DivX videos for their PS3 releases. "PS3 users can already use their PS3s to watch their own DivX videos," said DivX CEO Kevin Hall, "and now they’'ll also be able to enjoy the quality of DivX in the games." It'll be interesting to see how PS3 developers take advantage of DivX's video compression and high quality video technology. DivX is also in the process of getting the PS3 certified so they can offer a better media experience to console owners in the future. |

» No.
It'll mean the same quality but smaller videos so more content will fit on the disc, as well as a common standard video format based on features of the XMB so they don't have to rewrite/reinclude the decoder every single time.

The fact that divx codecs are implemented has nothing at all to do with graphics, cutscenes etc. its only a video codec, a very good one with very good compression but still its all about video quality and size.

» not really! maybe?
although divx was great and all, i wonder if devs are really into using an older version of what they currently use.
even though divx is h263 plus enhancements i think MP4 (h264) is superior in every aspect, be it picture quality, compression quality and speed.

» Sounds Good...but
I always thought that the ps3 used uncompressed HD video because of the blu-ray disk and its capacity. If Divx was to compress the file, surely this would have some detrimental effect on the quality of the video. I may be wrong though, anyone comment on this.

» Indeed....
Well whats interesting is that you can put uncompressed video into a divx container and it will look great, but that totally defeats the purpose of using DivX.....
So yeah, the only reason to use DivX is to compress the video to save space, which indeed will make it MUCH lower quality then uncompressed HD video......then with the huge capacity of blu-ray....well, I highly doubt any devs will be using DivX anytime soon....

» All digital video is compressed
Without compression, digital HD video of a 2hr movie would probably take up at least 200gb of data. The only 'analog' consumer video formats were Beta, VHS, and Laserdisc. Blu-ray does support uncompressed 7.1 PCM audio (or lossless compression of the same). But video is generally MPEG2, MPEG4 (AVC), or VC1 (essentially, WindowsMedia9). DivX is an even more-aggressive codec than VC1 or MP4. Now, since all PS3 game discs are Blu-rays (at least 25gb), I rather doubt we'll soon be seeing space shortages for cut-scenes. However, if DivX codec is natively-supported, then we might see better and more-frequent in-game video overlaid atop game graphics. For example, if you have a high-quality, high-compression video codec available, maybe now you can insert live-action video running atop polygons, etc. within the actual game action.

thanks freeplay for sheddin sum light ;D
jimmytime, it can but with divx devs can create more gameplay andworry less about the space taken up by cutscenes etc
