InFeCtus modchipNow this blogger isn't exactly technically knowledgeable enough to figure out the significance of being able to downgrade one's PlayStation 3, but all you code-smart homebrew folks might be.

QJ Forums member mhorpheox, writes in the QJ Forums that there's been some progress with the InFeCtuS Modchip (the one that's intended to be a modchip for all consoles). To be specific, mhorpheox claims that the modchip is the first that allows the for the PS3 to be downgraded.

You can head to an English language tutorial on how to do that via the video or our "read" link below. Word of caution first, a lot of Flashing is involved so be sure to follow instructions on the InFeCtuS tutorial carefully. To discuss the merits of this chip feel free to head to the QJ Forum Thread via our link below.

Will this lead to the inevitable? Time will tell.

If this works and if paradox actually releases there loader it will be brillant because there loader supposedly works on firmware before 1.5 so hopefully they release there loader soon

The word "there" means a place...like I put my apple over there. The correct word for each of the three situations you used "there" in is "their" which implies ownership. I hate to be a grammar Nazi but your comment makes you sound unintelligent, and I'm sure you are not.

 » i don't get it

to what do we have to downgrade the ps3? what has downgrading got to do with all this any way?

the psp has to be downgraded to be homebrew enabled because, the earlier firmware versions did not check the digital signatures (or whatever).

i don't get it, why would any one want to downgrade their ps3? i think a bunch of idiots came up with this "downgrading" because they don't really know what downgrading is for in the first place.

in otherwords... BULLSH1T

I think these so-called idiots aren't as idiotic as you are. The first FW versions are most of the time full of glitches and are a hackers walhalla. If someone will release a loader, it will probably be on one of the first firmwares. If you wanted to be an up2date smartypants and you upgraded your PS3, you'll be pretty F*ck3d.

 » First of all...

... to /dev/null:
Your inability to see why "downgrading" could be of use to someone shows us that you have no idea what you are talking about. It can be beneficial for many different reasons. Homebrew through the XMB and other less than legal and not recommended reasons are just a couple. You obviously don't know any of them. It's not like you calling them idiots is the pot calling the kettle black. The only idiot is you!

...stilgar91:
I do want to be up2date. I think that the positives far outweigh the negatives. Particularly the fact that I am able to run folding@home when I am not viewing an BD movie or playing a game. This could me my ticket to nirvana. Only time will tell. If not, it's not a really big deal. Games, movies, multimedia, and homebrew through Linux are currently available. If I can't downgrade I don't think I will be too sad.

I Cant hardly wait to crack open my $970 (CAD) PS3 and put some stupid mod chip in it.

Sarcasm aside arent future blue ray games expected to hit 50+ GB and 8 layer BRD to hold up to ~200 GB?

If game devs really wanted to fight piracy they would make thier games so big they would be a waste of time to DL. 120 GB elder scrolls 5 anyone? they could do this as well with the PSP even with a 8 gig MS who is going to want to DL and store 1.8 GB psp games, would be easier just to buy the damn thing.

 » ...wow

You possibly don't have a PSP. You are correct in saying 1.8 GB for a game, if game is referring to a COMPLETELY used UMD.

Many games that have been pirated for the PSP have had unnecessary parts of the game such as previews for other games. Wipe-out has been bundled with the full movie of Stealth, therefore making the game waayy less than 1.8 GB. Some games I have had were under 100 MB, most were even under 500 MB. The iso image creators would just cut out the unecessary parrts of the game such as background music or in game thematics. So just by taking out some audio and video, they size was GREATLY reduced. And most servers where I got games from only took an hour, if that, to download any game under 300 MB.

So do you really think I want to pay for gas (currently $3.19 in my town) to drive out to a Gamestop/ Wal-Mart/ Target/ etc... and let alone pay 50 bucks for a game, you my friend are completely wrong.

I would much rather wait days/weeks for a download to complete than paying 60 bucks for a PS3 game.

Stupid Canadian.

 » 3 cents

i understood what the random canadian means but
the ps3 will not be able to handle more than 2 layers of blu-ray because it is not designed to and no FW upgrade can make it do so.

due to technology, hackers can always rip these games even if it uses the full 50gb, pirates will always have copies of games because writers are available on the market. nobody can pirate UMD games on psp but hackers figured out a way to rip UMD data and convert it to PC ISO format and homebrewers created a program that reads it. in short SONY will only fend off pirates IF they can ENCRYPT their games so hard that nobody can UN-ENCRYPT it, only the game machine.

Re: Random Canadian (Unregistered) - 2007-05-19
 » Stupid american

There are ways of using all of the space on a disc and making it very hard for UMDgen and like programs to detect and remove or compress, IE by adding a slightly compressed bin file containing the games video in uncompressed format. Or by putting the game data in a container the is more difficult to open (see FF7 ISO)

Gran turismo 2 arcade disc crashes with almost every attempt to make the game size smaller, I know this from personal experience.

Lastly if everyone pirates games the companies arent going to make any -Bottom line-

when u got a nice torrent downloader like Blackcats- games.net u dont care because its fast 100-200k/s

private trackers rule!! im on blackcats too +] "lawllawl" my user name, you'll see me on the ps3 forums alot.

   Re: KUYA (Unregistered) - 2007-05-19
 » har

and i use public trackers
gives me a maximum of 3 megabytes, bytes not bits. 3MB per second of Download (3MB size of an average MP3). my dsl is just a regular flets, so what if i upgrade to those HIKARI speeds, i may get 7MB per second. on private side, i find demonoid is way better than blackcats.

 » It's stupid......

Just use Linux for homebrew. And if you really like your PS3, you'd buy the games instead of trying to pirate them and steal money from developers.

if you are an english speaking only human stucked to live in an island like COWABONGGA isle, no english game releases. availables are PC, turtle fast internet, overpriced consoles, and cowabongga language games, can you still say what you've just said?

Even is you don't want to put a modchip in your PS3, which it seems like it would be very easy since it can be done on many consoles, this chip will help lead to software exploits that will give people homebrew even if they don't want to get the chip. Thank you infectus.

 » the chip is junk

Not a chance in hell I'd install that. I've put modchips into almost everything I've owned, and i'm not installing a useless universal modchip into my precious ;) if it doesn't do anything!! Come on!.. The PS3 can't even run with low firmwares! There were so many things lacking. Are you idiots just doing this for a few free games? Like the PS2 and PSP you won't need this eventually, so why bother. How many people installed a modchip in the ps2 before they found the swap magic? Seriously, someone will find a disc loader that works, for PS3 games, and you can all pirate away. Fu Ck the firmware.

@KaNo: wow you know an anti leech tracker. Respect. And 100-200kb/s sound really great if you download 50gb x). Okay the games are still just about 10gb big, but maby they'll became bigger. Get away from the stupid torrents and buy the games cause if you stay on alts like this (I mean the public ones) you'll get cought (sooner or later).

» yay this is good news

i can't wait to go down to the market and buy a $5 ps3 game! piracy is a good thing, developers like piracy thats why they continue to make games.

i'm going to have every ps3 game pirated. if you could get hardware for free would you get it? yes! if you could get software for free would you get it? yes! if you could get games for free would you get it? yes! if you couls get sex for free would you get it? yes!

everything i own has been stolen or pirated. my ps3 i stole from a little girl next door. piracy makes the world go round. without piracy the world will become a bad place like asia. who wants to live in a world like asia? not me, not anyone! it's scary to think of the world like asia, so if you don't want to be like asia pirate as many things as you can.
