they say that the ps3 was a multimedia machine and didnt really give a crap about how the games looked because you have bluray? now they flip flop and say that it is a gaming powerhouse.
I am not going to get that machine and have to plug in another system right beside it so I can play ps2 and ps1 games. ***** that! The ps2 is the most popular system in the world - and I guess that Sony is just preparing to take it up the @ss and let the ps3 fail...
bastards - I wanted it to be good.
The components they mention are all from the premium version of the PS3 in USA and Japan. What improvements have they made? Also, from what I understand, the Jap and USA PS3s come with the PS2 hardware built in so that they can get a very high success rate with backwards compatibilty. Are they implying that they are going to remove this and try another method, possibly emulating like the 360 (which means each game has to be specifically programmed to run on the hardware)?
If anyone has more input on this, please let me know. I have a bad feeling that Sony is simply stripping down the euro/aussie models and trying to give the bad news in the form of bogus good news. Someone please tell me I'm wrong.
Yup they are gonna drop the chip and use emulation,at least on the 360 they had no choice because of the xbox1 chip wasnt theirs but this just takes the Biscuit.
They are charging Europe,Great Britain(even more expensive) and Australia far more and taking out the PS2 hardware !! so you are actually going to get FAR LESS for a LOT more money its just unbelievable.
I am not buying one I wouldrather keep the PS2 and now go for either the Wi or 360.
You're absolutly right. The euro PS3 is piece of *****!
you are rigt!this is a rip off! i have already pre-order my PS3 but now...
this is a ripo off! this new specs are no different from the premium US console without the extra hardware!!!!! where the price difference went? if it has less chips it would cost less? right?!!?!?!
what a rip.off!!!!!
I made a huge investment on this game, if there really is a newer version out there in EUR that would be unfair as balls. If there's a chance that they'll introduce this more powerful ps3 to the US, I'm gonna kill my PS3 and get it RMAed.
It's not new, or more powerful. READ THE ARTICLE! Sony Is REMOVING the PS2 chip from the Euro PS3's, NOT adding anything. Be glad you bought a U.S. model before they decide to do it here too!
No they are not. The article does not say that
just more lies from sony to push a few more consoles.......what a joke...they say ps2 games cannot look good on ps3 well my 360 makes xbox games look better than they originally did.....oh yeah ps3 is ***** im so glad i've wasted 700.00 on a bluray movie player
What the hell does this have to do with the 360 or Xbox in general for that matter?
I'm a euro customer (UK to be specific) and aren't arsed in the slightest if they back down on PS2 compatibility slightly especially if it means better performance PS3 (less heat/bugs ect).
I have a PS2 I use to play ps2 games, divx blah blah blah...I'm sure I'll probably try out Metal Gear Solid 3 at some point on it but thats about all...
And I didn't see anywhere the mention that they took chips out of the console, probably just preparing EURO fans for the problems that already exist with PS2 back compatibility (as the japs and yanks have been complaining about it alot). And will be focusing more with getting the console better with updates rather than the back compatibility...
Thats how I read it, nothing to do with stripping it down...
READ:
**** Cell Broadband Engine, 60 GB hard disc drive, Blu-ray Disc player, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, SIXAXIS wireless controllers and the rest of the original hardware. According to Sony ****
I will tell you what it has to do with the 360
HA yer right what has this got to do with the 360 well go back and look at posts other than Blu Ray the other PS3 favorite boast was it had FULL PS2 hardware compatibility and the 360 didnt,
And say what you want this, but if they have removed the PS2 hardware to MOST PS3 owners this was a very important part of getting a PS3 and its going to hit Sony hard.
Got this from another site -
Sony seems to have removed the processor from the machine that handled the backwards compatibility and replaced it with software emulation in order to cut costs. Yet Europe and Australia still pay the highest prices for the PS3 console, when Japanese + Americans do get mostly full backwards compatibility
I see what you're saying about the removal of chips from the system. 2 things:
1. I'm waiting for this to clear up more, rumor wise, ust out of curiosity.
2. Still not arsed as it'll mean a cooler/lighter/longer lasting system for me.
I'm sure people who are really bothered about playing PS2 games will keep their PS2s like I did. I'm buying a PS3 primerily for PS3 games, and they're giving me a system dedicated for that purpose...
So no complaints here...
All the machines were supposed to get software emulation and a special team was put in place just for the sake of it. They simply didn't finish on time so first consoles got PS2 hardware to properly play BC games. But even then it was said that majority of PSX/PS2 library will be playable.
Let's wait for the BC list but my take is PAL version will get software emulation WITH upscaling and other enhancements, and some of games will not play but majority of killer aps (GOW, GT, FF etc) will be perfectly playable. I bet this is one of the announcements PH has for GDC
HA HA this is just so funny, all the PS3 fans always going on about the 360 only had backward compatibility through software emulation and now this bombshell.
I like the bit about taking out the PS2 hardware for better PS3 graphics etc LOL its about saving MONEY and yet they are charging Europe and Australia MORE for LESS of a system HA HA.
Helluvalot saving generate they can :)
Give it a break guys. Wait for the BC list and then start complaining You can't play PS2 games on your PS3.
Yes, he's right.
They said that the backward was being built by software.
But the didn't finished by time and they said the first units will carry the ps2 hardware.
now, it's time to remove this. They may have the software finished.
it's a good new.
I have a U.S. version, that HAS backward compatibility, so I'm not worried.
wth are 360 peeps doing in here just to be hating. sure, I know there are some people that would like to play their ps2 games on the ps3, but why would you do that with all the ps3's potential, it would literally be a waste of electricity (if you read the power hog articale you'd know what I mean =P). All the other haters that don't own a ps3 and are x-box boys should stop coming in here and picking on the ps3 for minor things like this, or I'll start picking on their moms, the fact that the x-box had a huge overheating problem unlike the ps3, and the fact that the x-box was fathered by pure evil (Microsoft).
Just ignore it mate, if sony decided to make the power light orange and move the eject button to the left hand side of the console under the flap the X-box trolls would start making fun as if they just halved the power of the unit...
I do my best to ignore them, you should too...
;-)
That was funny :)
Yeah, but YOU were fathered by ME.
I wonder if the software emulation is even being worked on.
David Reeves said that %u201Cgames designed for PS3 offer incredible graphics quality, stunning gameplay and massively improved audio and video fidelity that is simply not achievable with PS and PS2 games. Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, truly taking advantage of this exciting technology.%u201D
Translation: you're totally screwed if you want to play BC games on PS3 in Europe, despite paying much more. PS3s in other regions will likely have the same components cut out.
The funny/pathetic thing is that sony's trying to make it out like you're getting something better! Classic sony! What crazy antics will you be up to next?
When is the official launch in mexico?
If you want to know, Sony is much better at emulating than M$, ask the PSP, it has full BC with ALL PS1 games.
*ask's PSP* ....It's Ok take your time ;)
Sorry, I gotta' call bs on this one. I love the ps1 emulation on psp but it's got some nasty freezing issues on some games. I'm on the second boss fight in ffviii that freezes the game when the boss does a particular attack. Having a little trouble with Chrono Cross as well.
sony has not released FFVII for the psp nor chrono cross. if you are having trouble with the game is more of your fault.were lucky enough that its good enough to where you can just rip an iso and play it. if you cant rip an iso its not sonys fault.
Sony isn't going to be able to emulate s*it anymore, as it's only a matter of time before the PS2 chips are removed from the PS3 in other regions. XBOX 360 has over 230 BC games and MS is still working on it. I can guarantee sony won't get close to that number, because they are worried about profits, not letting people play games that won't be sold much longer.
I cant believe sony did this! yes its a question of saving money. More, the europe ps3 will have a "new chassis".
Check this out:
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=23003
Dear god, what is happening? Are we europeans put aside?
It will not be in the interest of Sony to support 2 different platforms. They'll consolidate the software emu functions very soon. When this happens, it doesn't matter if you have the US version or not. The emotion engine in the US / Japanese version will be shutdown and locked out via firmware update.
I am dreading the march firmware update. This is supposed to be the major one....
"The European version of PlayStation 3 will play fewer
PlayStation 2 video games when it launches on March 23 compared with models launched earlier in Japan and America, Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news) (6758.T) said on Friday.

"The backwards compatibility is not going to be as good as the U.S. and Japan models," a Sony spokesman said.
PlayStation 3 (PS3) was first launched in Japan and North America in November and the model that will be introduced in Europe will be designed differently.
Software will take over some of the functionality that was originally taken care of by dedicated chips, which means far fewer PlayStation 2 (PS2) games can be played on a European PS3 compared with the Japanese and American PS3 models which play 98 percent of old games."

Sony hates you Australia & Europe!
OMG! ive been waiting for this and ive kept all my PS2 games only to find out that they wont work on the PS3!!??!?!?! AHHHH! thats really unfair.. usa and japan get it but us? ohhh no... oh yeah you can still BUY them from the firmware thingy RIP RIP RIP RIP RIP RIP!!!
as you can see im quite pissed about this
360 for me then.
You are dishing PS3 because BC and conclude that x360 is for you then, maybe you are going to play PS2 games in your x360 :D. Those Xbots are really awesome, every apparently bad news for the PS3 are taken by them to promote their console.
I'm sure SONY has maturated the BC by software, probably many PS2 games are working right now on the PS3 under software emulation, and probably they don't see the need to include more hardware in the PS3, that will let them to reduce their losses in every unit they sell. I hope SONY will be able to make a price drop in the PS3, and that is what many PS2 gamers (like me) are waiting for.
If they dont do a price drop after making PAL users have to keep their PS2 I would be more than shocked, but it does make you wonder why they seem to put the worst news and prices on the PAL users.
but dont come here and blame the lack of hardware BC for the PS3 as the reason to dish the PS3 in favor x360, it makes no sense, specially considering that x360 has an almost null BC. Probably the best games from the PS2 library (a huge one) will be supported using software emulation, we need to wait and see.
"specially considering that x360 has an almost null BC."
Let's just see if sony can get 230 PS2 games working perfect with upconversion to HD. Keep in mind the PS2's inferior hardware compared to the original XBOX. I wouldn't be suprised if sony gave up after 2 firmware updates.
Also, why would you want to use a PS3 to play PS2 games? Because they should look better! The PS2 could even play PS1 games that looked noticeably better. Look at you fanboys, begging sony for scraps of features.
although i really don't like microsoft's business practice and hence will not buy an xbox360, i think this behaviour by sony sucks. there is no reason why europe should pay more for less. okay more for the same is justifiable but more for less seems like blatant disregard for the loyalty of it's customers.
having said this i still think the ps3 is a much better machine than the xbox360. i have seen both systems (i own a ps3 and played on my friends xbox360) and i do think that the ps3 has no comparison - and no one can persuade me otherwise. in terms of design, innovation and technology the ps3 is really in another league. i just hope sony don't keep shooting themselves in the foot because i do want the ps3 to succeed - otherwise a gaming world ruled by microsoft is not one that is best for the consumer.
Sadly you cant bring yourself away from being bias towards the PS3 your second paragraph proves that as whatever Sony do wrong you give them a right...
yes i am a sony fanboy that is why i titled the comment sony fanboy.
but in the same way i think the xbox is a better (not necessarily more successful) system than the ps2, i actually do think the ps3 is a better system than the xbox360. but that is probably why the ps3 cost a heck of a lot more!
wished they´d changed the RSX and upgraded the memory. Third party titles look still better on the older and cheaper 360.
Wow that is so sad. I'm so glad I live in N. America and bought the PS3 already. Backwards compatibility is important to me.
it seems like sony really want the ps3 to fail with the way they are handling things. the only country where the ps3 will be dominent is japan. america it will probably be last behind the wii and 360. and in europe, well with this news and the fact that it costs more here than anywhere else, i think its pretty much going to fail. just another nail in the ps3 coffin.
@ Manchester Bloke
thats pathetic, i think a major feature of the console being removed is just a tad more major than moving the power button
and its got everything to do with the 360, because fo this the consoles are virtually the same for europeans
same preformance (face it, the tech specs are virtually the same, the cell processor is just as hyped and overrrated as the emotin engine)
very similair features (albiet a far worse online function on the ps3)
only advantage the ps3 now has is blu ray, but if blu ray loses the format war......
so u ask most europeans wheter they want to pay £200 for a 360 premium or £420 for a ps3, bearing in mind they are almost the same, i think we know what they will choose
I love Sony's game systems and I've really been rooting for the PS3. I've had a lot of faith in PS3 and Blu-Ray (their fates are very much entertwined--if one succeeds, both will). I've blown off all the negative press that it's gotten until now as idiots just wanting to root for the underdogs, whether or not the underdog deserves any rooting.
But this.... this may be too much. How far is it going to go? Are they going to start shipping the stripped down units to the US and Japan, too? Will the EE be locked out in a future fw to force everybody onto the same page?
Perhaps I shouldn't have rushed out and got a PS3 so early.
I wasn't referencing a change of location for the power button to the removal of BC.
I was talking about xbox lovers taking the oppotrunity to bash the console...
It may be a problem for some people but not for me, thats all I'm saying mate, I have a PS2 to play PS2 games with...
you guys jump to so many conclusions it's ridiculous.
a few things:
first, Sony said that they would be removing or cutting off the PS1 GS and the PS2 EE once they had a handle on software emulation. we all know that sometime in March, the PS3 is getting a major firmware update.
i'm just speculating, but i'm assuming that this firmware update will have the necessary PS1/PS2 emulation software included.
in either case, they still haven't said which games wouldn't be compatible, but unlike Microsoft and the 360, i'm sure Barbie's Horse Adventures will be shirked in favor of Metal Gear Solid 3. who knows, the percentage could still be in the 80-90% range. we just don't know right now, and it's silly and juvenile to get riled up over it until we hear more.
moreso, we pay next gen money for a next gen console. you want to play PS2 games, buy a $130 PS2.
anyway, we knew this was coming, so why the fuss?
Sony is doing what they have to to cut costs, and removing a component that isn't 100% necessary (how many PS1 games do you truly play on your PS2 nowadays? for me, just Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and i'm sure that would work fine on a UK PS3), in order to stay alive.
would you guys have them continue to include costly components in the PS3 and maybe close it's doors because they can't recoup the losses?
of course, i'm an American gamer, with an American PS3, but even i couldn't see myself getting up in arms about this.
save your energy. really.
this has to happen, its inevitable. once the ps3 games become more abundant playing ps2 games is going to be as much as a priority as playing ps1 games on your ps2. its a matter of time and it will wear off.
ends justify the means. the margin of gamers who keep and play every single game they own is very slim. most ppl trade games in to get new ones or simply just never go back to the old ones. besides it cant get any worse than the almost non existant xbox360 BC .
its not a big deal, i have a ps3. just make a new Capcom vs SNK game and ill be a sony fanboy for life.
Here is the words from the monkeys mouth.
According to a official press release from SCEE, the PAL PS3 will feature hardware changes which will enable the console to emulate a %u201Cbroad range of original PlayStation titles and a limited range of PlayStation 2 titles%u201D, says Sony.
BROAD range of PS1 titles
LIMITED range of PS2 titles
I'm guess broad means 80-90%
And limited could be anywhere between 10-50%.
we pay double what the japs pay for what a shaven down model with even more half assed ps2 emulation i mean it still goes in the rumor bin for now but i wanna see how am i gunna benifit from "amped specs" for some reason i cnt seem to see any this sucks i payed 425 for a shadow of a ps3 the americans get and japs get yet i pay more we get ripped of in the uk and we get it l8 thanks sony you are getting worce than moneysoft
we arew getting ripped off here, had to wait an extra 5 months for the ps3 and now we are paying 100 quid more for the console and we are getting less ps2 games to play on the ps3!
What happened to Sony's old mantra of complete "legacy" backwards compatibility? Let's help Ken Kutaragi rewind to last fall:
"...the PS3 will feature backwards compatibility with PS and PS2 games from day one. I'm emphasizing this because, from what I hear, there are some platforms that haven't been able to completely do this. It's costly in terms of hardware, but we'd rather [invest] firmly on compatibility from the beginning, rather than to have issues later on."
Too bad the sony faithful will just skip over that important contradiction. Now there will be issues with BC, namely a tiny fraction of games will work.
on my old ps2.
sorry but this is wrong the american model is $599 the uk model is far more expensive even if you take tax off it. i live in the UK and have a Japanese ps3 and am happy with it as its played the 20 jap ps2 and 10 jap psx games ive tried on it so far. i got one after update 1.51 so had no problems. The games ive played on it range from launch titles fantavision and ridge racer v to new games like yakuza 2. It also plays pepsiman for the psx fine too. Go here www.videogameimports.com if you are in the UK the ps3s are in the uk so no import vat i ordered my ps3 at 1:20pm on a tuesday and the next day at 9:00pm it came. You get a 90 day warranty as well unlike other websites that other uk customers nothing. You will be able to play weird and wonderful japanese games that didnt come out over here on the psx and ps2 plus the ps3 is region free so you can get american games, japanese games like ridge racer 7, virtua fighter 5 and resistance all play in full english if your japanese system is set to english plus places like yesasia.com sell games for £26 to £30 brand new and free postage and packing all customs paid too.
im keeping my slim ps2 for my pal games its not very big(the old big one broke).
I think of this as a good change. This is what I expected for the PS3 from the begining. However, since I do have a system with the PS2 hardware inside, It would be nice to have the firmware use software emulation if the game is supported, or go hardware emulation if not. Software emulation can give the same results that you can see with the 360 with their games (upscale to HD) but still give full compatability (games remain in SD) for those who are not (unlike the 360). Heck, emulation could help out the PS1 games as well with higher resolution.
This is a good chance for Sony... but who knows how it will go.
Shadow of the Colossus in HD.... *drool*
You're are dreaming if you think Blue-Ray is going to lose. The best HD-DVD can hope for at this point is to stay in the game, until dual players are on the market.
You've got the wrong topic. Also wait about 2 years and come back since I don't trust your psychic abilities.
sony never intended to install the emotion chip into the ps3 but time constraints forced them to do so. sony also said that they would remove the emotion chip once ps2 compatibility worked under software. unfortunately it seems like the ps3 is going the way of the xbox360 in the way of backward compatibilty. this is a mistake in some ways since unlike the xbox the ps2 has a huge fanbase. if - and this is a big if - ps2 compatibility is reasonable then ps3 owners won't be missing much and it will all be a storm in a teacup.
Very disapointing sony...only limited ps2 compatability makes that $1000AUD that much harder to swallow.
those american and japanese ps3's seem like gold atm.
Where is the source for this information?? Only a few weeks before launch and suddenly this comes out?? Looking at the state of the recent articles, are you sure it isn't another staffer reading something wrong and writing this??
this one paragraph says it all.
"The Euro version is more suited than ever to online play as it flaunts the Cell Broadband Engine, 60 GB hard disc drive, Blu-ray Disc player, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, SIXAXIS wireless controllers and the rest of the original hardware. According to Sony, the new model is a testament to their new commitment of bringing a better gaming experience to fans"
What the hell is the difference there?
Without some real proof, this one goes down as another piece of BS... And everyone gets scared to think they are getting cheated!! Calm down folks. Sony has always been backwards compatible. What makes you think they would eliminate that for only the EU customers?
Here is the original source of the news.
http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSL2267625820070223
quit using my name, tool
Sony think they are smart first we get a very very very very very very very very very very very very very late launch here in the UK / E.U then we have to pay 425 pounds for the console not including the 20 gb version they wont release yet.
Then you have to be the one of the 500,000 that have to sign up to get the blu-ray version of Casino Royale whilst the U.S get there blu-ray packaged in the console then this outrage out having less backwards compatibility for ps2 / ps1 games than the U.S and japan.
Sony just keep screwing us UK / E.U citizens over and over and over and over and over again we need to teach Sony a lesson about equal rights.
And before i forget you guys aint gonna believe this but two guys broke into a store or a place dunno which just to play a ps3 before its released in the pal territories click on this to see what im talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0S7k6lPcQw
