Don't break my achy-breaky bike, curse you!!! Finger-flip!EDGE Online decided to ask its readers if there's anything they wanted to ask Santa - er, Evolution Studios, about MotorStorm. Well, anything but a free PS3 with MotorStorm, perhaps - that, they can ask Santa for.

Anyway, the results are up on EDGE Online's site, and there are a lot of questions, and a lot of answers from the devs. We're going to extract the most interesting bits for you guys to chew on - perhaps you won't have to worry about that CES gaffe anymore.

  • Yes, there will be online VOICE chat during online dust races. Evolution says you can use USB and Bluetooth headsets. Currently, it's for 12 foul-mouthed, achy-breaky players... they're hoping for sixteen but the devs "can't commit to that right now."
  • There are currently no plans for split-screen (which this writer wished was at least in the demo), due to the complexity required to render two gameplay experiences in one screen. But guess what? "unless we get an overwhelming demand... the beauty of online consoles is that the game can change... and we can sit down with SCEE and say, 'Let's offer this for download – the fans want it'."
  • Regarding the lack of online in Japanese MotorStorms: Evo's Matt Southern revealed that, when talking to the Japanese localizers for the game, that this sort of thing is actually quite normal with them. They're used to "new iterations of the game" coming after launch, whereas Western audiences prefer the complete package out of the box.
  • Download Part Deux! A reader asked if there could or would be a "Replay Feature" in the game with full camera controls. Says Evo, "Not for the boxed launch, but as ever we’ll see what is being demanded by fans when we start to offer download packs."
  • They didn't miss rumble while making MotorStorm: "because we were heavily influenced by film in the making of MotorStorm and it has been proven many times over that you can achieve immersion without rumble." (... define Irony: Immersion without rumble...)
  • Finally, Blu-Ray. Evolution did compress game data to save space and loading times, but still "the sheer size of top-quality high definition data necessitates something like Blu-ray."

» Thats something alot of games have been missing!

split screen multiplayer for the PS3, Its just something that we've come to expect! especially when we have people over they dont want to watch us play and we dont want to watch them play we'd rather loose some screen space and play split-screen

 » WHAT!

NO!!! lol. THIS GAME MUST have split screen support! I demand a revist! lol how dare they take this out?

   by Alex (Unregistered) - 2007-01-13
» They didn't take split screen out.

It was never there in the first place. I've got broadband, so I'm perfectly fine just playing it online and hogging the whole screen to myself.

So Basicaky they are selling a game without slit screen, without replay, without rumble and without a japanese version...what a POS

 » ....

Most console games, if not all, are no longer split screen.

With online, whats the need for split screen.

You cant honestly tell me that the experience playing online is not as great as playing split screen in this type of game.

Halo2 split screen sucks.
GoW Split Screen sucks.
GT4 Split Screen sucks.
RFoM split screen sucks
Every Split Screen game now pretty much sucks because gamers have higher standards.

There hasnt been a split screen game that isnt better online on the Xbox or PS consoles.

Get use to it, because when you split screen, you sacrifice something in order to get it, With Halo2 you get massive frame drops.

With GT4 you get hard to judge turns. Thats pretty much with every racing game period.

» Split screen is fine on 360

Hmmm you may get framedrops on Halo2 but arn't you forgetting that is an "xbox1 game" ? and Gears of war runs perfect in split screen mode maybe it's time you got yourself a HD-TV and to everyone else go look in your local store and play GEARS on split screen it runs faultless.

 » VietOne...

I played through the entirety of GoW, splitscreen with my buddy....no drop in frames, no damned headset on, and easy ass communication....as well as passing around bowls, slurpee breaks etc....

Playing with your buddies in person is WAY better then playing with them over live.

XBL is still great, but I still like to have a buddy I can punch sitting next to me...

 » not true

GT4 split screen does not suck, in fact it's one of the things i do most with GT4. me and somone else pick match ups of cars (like honda s600 vs honda 2000) and take to the track, and it's always fun. not once have i or anyone else screwed up cuase the screen was to hard to see (i even played it on a really tiny car screen and had no problems) i don't get where you had problems with it. but on motorstorm, i think split screen would be a great addon, and i say go for it

I was hoping they would finally comment on the 720p 30fps / 1080p 60fps issue. =/

And only at 720p and 30fps....sounds like they are pushing the PS3 to it's limits already and are not ABLE to run split screen (pretty much running two instances of the game). Very interesting.....so maybe an update to dumb down the graphics durring split screen, which would have been the logical choice in the first place.....but then sony would lose face....haha...*****ing companies....

   Re: Shatterdome - 2007-01-14
 » oh yeah...

and NOTHING about this game "neccesitates" blu-ray.....not unless there are a couple hours of HD cinematics that are NOT needed.....ohhh damn, sony makes me laugh at how much they lie and twist the truth...

Re: Mr. Common Sense (Unregistered) - 2007-01-14
» cuttin' corners again huh sony

The only thing making sony's blu ray necessary is the sony hype machine or S.H.M as I call it. There's just no way more than 9gb can be required for a game like this, especially if the data was indeed compressed. There's not a huge number of tracks or vehicles, and the tracks aren't that big (I've played the demo.) I'd say sony is telling developers that to make blu ray seem necessary.
I wouldn't say the PS3 is being pushed to its limits at this point, but its capabilities could evolve at the same rate as the 360, if the sales go up and it's actually worth it to developers.
How can it be so complex to render 2 gameplay experiences on the screen? Come on the N64 could do 4 player split screen with almost no graphics drop! Not everybody has fast internet and their own console to play 2 player so removing split screen is dumb. Then Peter Dille from sony still thinks motorstorm is 60fps at 1080p!

WHAT??? Do you HAVE friends?

YOU cant honestly tell me that playing online against anonymous people is the same FUN as sitting with your buddies on the couch and beating the hell out of them (or getting beaten anyway)! Anyone who has EVER done such a gaming night will agree.

Exactly what I was thinking! They cant do it unless they sacrifice graphical prowess. But its idiotic:
I you have to sacrifice something, like higer resolution textures and polygon count, then damnit: DO IT. With the smaller screen each player has one wouldn't notice anyway and GAMEPLAY COMES FIRST!!!

» No split screen, no thanks

Serious, I don't care for competition over the internet with people I don't know. I wanna own people in my own house w/out having to get another PS3!

Do you not EVER have people over, and just want to have some fun playing PS3. Thats the purpose of Split-screen! I love how the 360 fanboys come in here and bash at Sony because of this when they arnt the ones developing it! ive been seeing alot of people getting 360's over the holidays but most of those people are just idiots, like one thinks a woofer is the same thing as a subwoofer and uses the wall as a screen for his projector! Thats just ubelivably stupid to have a projector without a screen! Walls leave much to be desired...

ok, read what you just wrote. You will see there are times, it looks like you are trying to say something coherant. But sadly you come off as the idiot you are trying to bash. Goodwork, heres a cookie.

» NO SPLIT SCREEN _ HORRIBLE

One of the best games for ps3 in sheer easy to pick up fun will not have split screen?

THIS SUCKS!

I want to be able to split my widescreen into half and race with a friend, or my brother .... jesus, how many people have siblings that they play games with - even go halfs on expensive consoles...

split screen in gran turismo 4 defined racing on the ps2.... if you want to lose out on that market and have players picking up other games because they don't want to bore the hell out of people just sitting around them - be my guest... but they'll all pop in a multiplayer game....
