PS3 40GB 60GB comparison - Image 1It's almost November, and the 40GB Sony PlayStation 3 SKU is about to be released in US shores. Of course, aside from the obvious changes that we know the 40GB SKU will have (less USB ports, no backwards compatibility), we're also curious about the subtle physical differences the new PS3 SKU will have compared to the old one.

It's a good thing that Japanese gaming magazine and website Famitsu took the initiative and compared a 40GB PlayStation 3 unit and a 60GB SKU side-by-side. To make things easier, Famitsu used the new stark ceramic white PS3 40GB unit and compared it against a black 60GB console.

The pictures provided by Famitsu are pretty much self-descriptive: two USB terminals, less vent holes in the underside, the placement of the ports are slightly different. There's also the absence of the PS3's "Super Audio CD" logo from the 40GB.

It's better to check out the comparisons for yourself, so just click on the thumbnails for the larger pictures.

Wouldn't having less vent holes make it run hotter?

65 nm, just the thing the xbox needs. Microsoft needs to pull themselves together and release a console that works.

I'm getting pretty tired of waiting for this version.

» This new 40GB is awesome

It's quieter, runs cooler, uses less power, cheaper, is lighter, has less vents and comes in a great new colour. As long as you don't need PS2 compatability.

With great must have games like Ratchet and Clank - Tools of Destruction and Uncharted : Drake's Fortune, this Xmas is going to be fantastic.

Wonder y?

wonder whether theyll ever drop ps2 B/C permanently.

or will they eventually introduce emotion chip to europe? Does the EE chip shorten the lifespan of PS3? hence why they stopped it in US

is my 60 gig launch jus as same the current 60 gig?

So many Qs and mysteries

But r we even going to catch up to the japan store? I play alot of ps1 games and would love to get the rare ones, but we got along of meh games verses the japanese store. THEY GOT KING OF FIGHTERS '95-'99!!! Sony needs to at least give us a regular helping of ps1 games, maybe 1-2 ps1 games per week?

Are they goning to make a white 60gb or 80gb model? What about the people that want the white color but want everything with the system, and not a watered-down version? Also we see some changes like in the port placement. Is this for cooling results?
