Piracy killed the PC star. Arr. - Image 1GDC 2007 had a panel on piracy. And even if you believe that they're just whining about the supposed "cost" of piracy to the business, if GDC has a panel on that, then THEY, the devs, believe it's a problem for THEM, the devs. Take id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead, who, according to Joystiq's coverage, points to internet piracy as the reason why Enemy Territory: Quake Wars has gone multiplatform.

Why? He says that console piracy is minimally relative to PC piracy. "By a large factor."

Here we go again. The nitty gritty of the economics of piracy to developers is more complicated than you think, which all depends on the popularity of the game in various territories, enforcement if intellectual property laws in those territories, the financial health and development portfolio of the developer... you get the drift, right? And our take is that ethics... is ultimately the responsibility of the guy practicing it, not to the guys preaching it.

Short version to chew on, though: professional devs need to eat, too. Easier job if you've got Gears of War in the bag and Unreal Tournament 3 in the side pocket, perhaps - pirates might as well be tilting at Catalan windmills. And while Quake Wars comes from a long-running franchise, if its developer is looking to consoles as part of a loss-mitigation strategy...

 » Hmmm...

They don't have it all bad....I mean, it's not like I can return a game that I don't like to Wal-Mart after all the intellectual property lobbying nonsense. Having a product that is illegal to return no matter how badly coded it is must be nice.

As far as consoles having less piracy, maybe for now. There are already pirate modchips for Xbox, PS2, X-360, and Wii. PS3 will be any day now. Then what will they do, run to making games for cell phones? Or perhaps just STFU and go back to making games for PC?

Why steal games from iD? They haven't made anything worth stealing for nearly 10 years now and the prices were much lower back then.

when it comes to software piracy - in this case games, its no real mystery as to why there is such a large difference in the amount of pc titles pirated compared to console titles. PC Gamers know the internet, they know how their pc works, they see a side of gaming console gamers are oblivious too. Console gamers know what the 'hottest' new system is, or think they do(PS3=jokes). After deciding on one of the few consoles thats about as deep as gaming goes for them. Of course there is online play such as the Xbox Live [SUBSCRIPTION] service, but if you even want to consider that multiplayer gaming then compared to pc multiplayer gaming - its primitive community. And this is why there is such a large amount of pc pirated software....because pc gamers know its out there, and in time they learn how available it really is. So for a pc gamer to pirate a game its nothing special, its not some 007 'im a 1337 hacker' ego boost its common knowledge. Now if you take a pure console gamer and ask them about getting pirated console titles they wouldnt know what to do. Console titles are not pirated as much as PC titles......because console gamers dont know HOW. I could even make a safe assumption that if some console game is downloaded/pirated etc etc. it was done so by a pc gamer who may also play console games, or for a friend who plays console games.

heh i love rambling on about these topics when im somewhat tweaked out O_O! but regardless of that i still think i got most of my point in there. OH another thing just so i dont come off as some "warez monkey", i actually do pay for my games even if i already have 'tested' it out. Being mostly a competitive gamer the cdkey verification to play online is a very effective security system and im all for it because it has its ways of improving online play and competition. other then that though, cdkey's needed solely for installation are useless.
