GTAThe jabs at Sony just keep on coming. But as they say, you gotta roll with the punches.

Recently, Grand Theft Auto creator Dave Jones has divulged that he's not convinced about Sony's online gaming strategy and that beating MS' Xbox Live is a long-shot. He mentions in an Edge magazine interview that he "seriously questions Sony's policy of leaving it down to publishers to come up with their own standards for each [online] game."

He elaborated his statement by saying that "I completely disagree with it. I'm not going to put my credit card details with five different companies for some bits of downloadable content. Sony is a huge force, and definitely has been with the PS2 - but now I see it being, at worst, a 50/50 race, but as time goes on I lean more and more towards Microsoft."

Jones, leaning towards MS, isn't surprising since he is currently working on a Xbox 360 title- Crackdown. Both companies, Sony and MS, have become formidable forces in the game console arena, it would definitely be exciting to watch them wiggle their way out of their troubles and match-up in the coming console wars.

» If Sony isnt making their service unified theyre crazy

This news coming after sony's recent announcement of cutting ps3's down to just the US and Japan is making this blow after blow for sony. While this is just one persons opinion it is exciting for 360 fans to hear this sort of confidence in the systems approach. If that is really how playstation network platform is really going to work it sounds really tedious to me. I wouldnt be surprised if you could save your credit card info onto the console to make purchases but that doesnt really sound appealing either.

i was all for this article and agreed with alot of the comments til......

"Jones, leaning towards MS, isn't surprising since he is currently working on a Xbox 360 title- Crackdown."

that comment just made me go woah! hang on! he aint exactly going to big up the ps3 if he's developing a game thats a 360 exclusive. Use ur minds people

The fact that Sony's Online service will be free is what appeals to me. The companies charging money I'll usually avoid Im afraid.

 » heh

Sony online network will be free, but to play multiplayer battles you have to pay a small fee to the makers of the game... Sounds about right.

 » Tits up for Sony!!!!

it just keeps getting worse for Sony here i think. I think this is the final straw for me really. Living in the UK i cannot get a PS3 til at least march but probably realistically next christmas with the shortages they will still have at launch. The only reason i would have bought one would be for Metal Gear really anyway, so with what looks like a substandard online experience and no PS3 for me for a long time, looks like i'll be getting a few more miles out of my 360 yet.

And oh yeah, to number 3, just because this guy is currently working on one exclusive 360 game, doesn't mean he will burn all bridges with Sony just yet. It does mean though that he will get an in depth look more so at the 360 and online experience and so will therefore have a very valid point.

» I don't see understand how Sony's online plan is any different...

...from the PC model, and that seems to be working just fine.

Free online play with downloadable content at a cost (a la Steam).

 » CC Details

Asking this guy for a comment, would be equivalent to asking Ted Price at Insomniac what he thinks about the 360.

Of course you will be able to save your CC details, and not have to input them in everytime.

I never seen so much negative news surrounding a console launch like the PS3, but in the end, I find it all so funny. I will still plan on getting one on November 17th, and have no doubts it will be a huge success.

No Sony will let the companies decide if they want to charge. Like on PS2, many games are completely free to play online with multiplayer.

.hack//fragment, MGS 3 Subsitance, S.O.C.C.O.M. etc.

Thats what I want, so im glad theyre keeping, and imrpoving it further.

» another engaging shot at sony from a guy who doesn't actually work for sony

some people should just shut the hell up about online service. Nobody gave a crap about online until xbox gave us a pc to console expirence. Same goes for the 360 EXCEPT now you have to pay roughly 2x as much to play online AND pay for new "content" that is usually free for the pc. I don't hear anyone *****ing about that.

And of course the guy is going to lean towards microsoft, they're paying him big bucks to create a game thats roughly 4 years old. Whatever though, people who want a console expirence will get a ps3, and people who want a cheap PC alternative will get a 360. And people who say life doesn't matter will get a wii. just because.

» Yeah, the CC comment was a bit silly...

I assume billing information would be handled like most DL services. Like iTunes, for example, I can pay with a credit card, an iTunes gift card, or even PayPal, and my billing info is linked to a login/e-mail account...

Geez, you'd think M$ created internet commerce or something...

» The fact is this guy knows nothing about the PSN (Playstation Network)

He is just speculating. BTW he has no bridges with SONY what are you talking about??

He co founded "Real Time Worlds" a bull$hit start up company that is developing exclusively for the 360 under the MS umbrella. Is like Bungie but a mediocre version for Christ sake.

BTW he did not create the stellar GTAIII, he was involved in the creation of the GTA series on the PC way back when hardly anyone knew what GTA was. He is just some dumba$$ who knows nothing about Sony's platform and is under MS's payroll. His word is a good as Major Nelson as far as anyone is concern. I think this should be more emphasized in the actual blog entry.

   by JimmySunderland (Unregistered) - 2006-09-07
» Yeah, this guy is totally suspect...

I mean, information about the Network Platform would've been provided with the dev kit, wouldn't it?

And Sony certainly wouldn't be sending one of those to an M$ second-party. So where's this guy getting his info...

   by Weeee (Unregistered) - 2006-09-07
 » To TheProfessor

I bet he know more about psn than you. Seriously what do we know about it, NOTHING!!!! If its anything like the ps2 online ill wait till a price drop. My ps2 and 360 are giving me enough games to feed me until the ps3 price drop.

To me he has said the truth that i have tried to avoind for quite sometime (and since he has said it, i have leant to accept it). You guys may keep trashing and turning on your seats about what he said but i strongly believe he's saying the truth.

 » Holy crap...

this guy has been working on that online game since Vice City. LOL

   by TheProfessor - 2006-09-07
» I dont criticize something I know nothing about.

That's exactly what he is doing. Do you honestly think he knows anything about the Playstation Network? Were you serious about that comment?

THIS IS A SECOND PARTY 360 DEVELOPER!!!

Not even first party Sony developers know much about the PSN platform except that it exist.

BTW a certain Sony Prophet who has leaked bunch of info on the PS3 and has been right for about 13 items (see previous qj.net post) mentioned that there is a single sign on for the network. So in response I say, I probably know more than this guy does about PSN. Especially since the point of his comment is to create FUD.

 » *rolls eyes*

Not only is that a quote from someone who is currently paid by Microsoft, but who cares? He's the creator of the ORIGINAL gta, which was really not rated that well, it improved slightly for gta2, but really, nobody cared about the series till GTA3 and on, which he had NOTHING TO DO WITH AT ALL. I think he was already out of Rockstar before GTA3.

   by Shatterdome - 2006-09-07
 » ....

People need better reading comprehension skills.

The credit card comment said that he did not want 5 different companies with his info....which they will, even if you save it on your PS3 to auto input each time, it still has to go to company X so they can get paid....then if you want to cancel or something, you have to figure out who you actually paid.

Thing is, it's going to be just like PS2 + downloadable content....and how good was PS2's online ? not very....

 » TheProfessor knows nowt

I think you'll find that this guy has his own funded development company. His company is making 1 game currently exclusive to the 360. This does not make him a 2nd party 360 developer. Do you think he has done no business with Sony in the past? I'm sure he will want to in the future for his company to be a true success. He will also know more than the average shmo about ps3 networking as will sony's first party developers. What do you think they are working on now? Do you really think they will only implement online gaming after launch?

   by DP (Unregistered) - 2006-09-07

If you admit it... Sony´s online service for the PS2 was plain crap.
Microsoft did a good job with the new LIVE and is steadily keep working on it.

I just played about 4 Hours of Test Drive and I have to say I have never seen such a well integrated Online Mode. Its plain perfect.

But with the Sony Concept impossible.

Oh and by the way. With the one price you pay for XBL you can play ALL Games. So, if you buy 15 Games for the PS3... and want to play them ALL online... think about it! Do you really think it will be cheaper then?

You think none of the publishers will charge for there games?

Okay. Think so if you want. We will see wich service will be the better...

PEACE

P.S. And as always, excuse those crouts bad english of mine ;)

 » what

doesn't it take a long for xbox games to come , yes it did with a lot of games. latest gta 3, 4, 5 games came out first on ps2, why did it take so long to release it, huh. come on xbox you have to pay for online games very lame to take advange of your wallet. ps2 and 3 are going to free online play. plus ps2 camera came out first before so who is copying.

» If Microsoft wasn't Microsoft, do you really think they could survive?

Reason why microsoft focuses on Live is because they can't create any worth a crap titles. Mass Effect? Viva Pinata? hell even Halo?? they're not made by microsoft development houses, they're made by third parties who were bought out by microsoft (because they can afford it!)

   by Vietone - 2006-09-07
 » Free online

What you guys dont realize is online games have been free for a long time now. Developers just have to get use to tjhe tried and true system of PC online gaming. Dedicated servers or listen servers are the way gaming should be.

Do you think developers like Xbox Live? Its the most restricting online system that exist. Think of future games. Xbox Live has alot of limitations like maximum amount of players. You will never ever see a 32 multiplayer game on the Xbox. I dont think they will ever get past 20.

All your credit card information is charged to Xbox Live, then microsoft takes a cut off of everything and developers get the rest. So why do they charge a fee? Because they can. Thats why Xbox Live is the crappiest online service ever made. Game Spy has been the biggest online gaming service for years because they know how to do things right. They make you watch small advertisements for free use of their online system. You get just about every function they offer but for a small fee like Xboxlive, you dont get advertisements and wait lines.

PS3? They will have their own unified online system but not the way people think. I dont need my friends to know what PS3 game I play if its online or offline. I dont need my friends to know im watching a damn movie but with the Xbox360 they know.

I forsee in the future that PC and PS3 games will be compatable with each other. Being able to play in a 64 player server in CoD3 will be something that Xbox360 owners will never be able to expierence. As long as Xbox360 games dont use dedicated servers, they will never get close to the online expierence that has been the standard for over a decade.

 » wrong

you guys are wrong microsoft will allow developers to add their own servers to xbox live it just have not been implemented yet, and you still just pay one fee 50 bucks a year, but time will tell which company has the best online service sony or microsoft, my bet microsoft.
