They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Well, tell that to the police force of Fairfax County, who are outraged because of the poor depictions of them and their cruisers in Grand Theft Auto. Again? That's two for GTA today!

No one killed somebody this time, nor did anyone else find ecstacy in the game package. This time, the cops are griping about their depictions in the controversial game. It began when some YouTube users uploaded gameplay clips, showing what GTA is best known for: civilian-slaying, car-jacking, and hooker-honking.

"The Fairfax County Police Department finds the videos in very poor taste," said spokesperson Don Gotthardt. "One of the reasons we find it in poor taste is because of the way the officers are depicted." The force has already contacted YouTube for removal of the clips, while Rockstar Games made no response to inquiries.

 » well

i suppose they have every right for them to take it down. it kind of falsely dipicts what those cops in that area do and are about. and having that on youtube falsely advertises them. the cant make the person change what they do to the game but i think its totally their call if they want the video taken down. i know i wouldnt want anyone to falsely represent me. i think thats also the reason rockstar only immitates big companies and such in their games instead of actually putting their logos in there.

San Andreas has been out for how many years? If anyone was to form a specific opinion of the 'fairfax county' police, they would have already formed that opinion. All the sour faces just need to give up arguing about a franchise that they CAN'T BEAT.

In Vice City didn't the police say funny things too? South Park does this kinda thing every week to celebrities, organizations etc. I sure hope when i'm older i don't sit around complaining about the kids skateboarding on the street.

 » Bloody Hell..!

Did anyone bother to mention that these cars are not actually in the retail version of the game, and that Rockstar didn't create them?

The person who uploaded the video has just modified the skins/textures etc for the PC version of the game, which you can do with pretty much all games.

The game isn't sold like this..!

It's like buying a newspaper which has a headline reading "Hero Rewarded For Killing Terrorist" and then scribbling out the word "Terrorist" and replacing it with "Innocent Civilian". Just because I've altered my personal copy, nobody else's says this, the newspaper's writers didn't do this, and the "Hero" didn't actually kill an "Innocent Civilian".

Again, people moaning about games and don't have the full facts. Getting pretty tired of this now. Wish the people who keep moaning would get tired too.

» What is the limit of parody?

Or, for that matter "free speech"? ---You know, one of the *freedoms* that the police supposedly "protect"?

While on one hand, I would agree that the modified game images are 'false representations' of what the actual represented police do ..... on the OTHER hand, ask the question: would the police go so far and be so concerned about you or me if someone plastered our faces on a YouTube video? ..or a private company we own? ...or (how about this one) a depiction of a religious icon important to you or me?

--I think not. And the game (for those who've actually PLAYED it --not just soaked-up the media 'controversy' out of context) functions as a parody.

Perhaps in a different time, years back: yes, these would be out of line. But, anymore (and increasingly) we see the police play the role of 'thugs' in our society, enforcing infringement on our freedoms, and embracing ever-restrictive laws, setting up Big Brother cameras in order to fine us for going a couple miles above the speed limit.

So, yes: I'm a little jaded when it comes to them causing a big fuss over a PARODY depiction of both the game and the police. Matter of fact, I think there are probably ...y'know: BETTER USES OF THEIR PUBLIC-PAID TIME than wasting resources on this.

 » good point but..

That is a good point on the infrigement but you forgot to mention it is their right to deny access to their image publically on the internet. Yet, if they really wan't to have this video clip removed, they should be willing to sue rockstar games to have the depiction removed also or its just crap.

If my picture were on youtube being displayed in a poor manner, I would want to have it removed too. You do have a point though, if it were just a picture of a person the same race as me like the generic police of grand theft auto I shouldn't have the right to take it down.

 » I love how..

the people comment on how they wouldn't let their kids play this..

And they're right- ITS A *****ING 18+ GAME.

And if you're gonna take a vid off youtube, it'll get reuploaded elsewere,on the likes of veoh, or crunchyroll.

People have no clue these days.

It's just a game.. When someone shoots someone over GTA, I'll bet 90% of the time there's a prior warning that goes unheeded, there are signs of mental illens, there is SOMETHING in that person that suggests instability.. If GTA didn't trigger it I'm sure a violent movie would.

The game also portrays corrupt and bloodthirsty Asians, warring Hispanics, and crack smoking black people.. And you can kill them all. It's a game lol

A parody is a parody. Boo-hoo, so the game makes cops look bad. It's packed to the brim with jokes and parodies of everything else, get over it.

Should go cry about something else. Or they should make the cars say faxfair or something to get them of their back.

 » "kids"

Those "kids" are good at 3d modelling and inserting them into a GTA. They make it fit flawlessly into the game as well, those sure are some "kids".

I think any realistic depiction of what cops really do would make any [human being] hate them.

They have nobody to blame but themselves.

   by jmak0 - 2009-04-10
 » they poorly depict themselves

you only have to watch police camera action and other similar tv programmes in order to see how brutal the police can be, and I think gta captures that aggression perfectly

 » LMAO

If a kid is savvy enough to mod his towns police cruiser into the pc version of this game chances are he dont give a gosh dern about becoming a fairfax county police officer...
