GameStop, one of the largest game retailers, recently saw a very exciting season for the next gen consoles and their respective games. This recently got head honchos Richard Fontaine (Chairman), Daniel DeMatteo (Vice Chairman), and David Carlson (Executive VP) to get their heads together in a conference call to discuss the game industry's ups and downs.

Regular readers might already be familiar with some of the things they discussed like how price cuts certainly affect the market: the PlayStation 3 price cut doubled their sales and the Xbox 360's gave theirs a significant boost. They also observe how Sony PSP sales have sky rocketed enough to endanger supply but they expect it to slow down in anticipation of the PSP Slim.

The most interesting point of discussion is probably their approach to the delay of Grand Theft Auto IV. Being one of the most heavily anticipated games for the Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Sony PS3, its delay would certainly affect the market. However, the honchos believe that it's probably for the best.

They believe that its delay will make more room for the market to absorb other quality games better, especially the release of Halo 3 which will overlap with GTA IV's. Flooding the market with so many games might decrease sales since buyers can only buy so much games. From a retailer's point of view, excellent games coming in for every major console would balance out the hole left by GTA IV's delay.

basically what they are saying is "We dont want a lot of good games to come out at the same time, because then people can only buy one of them and when they want to buy the other great games months later, it will have a reduced price and we wont make as much money"

» Halo 3 sales will sell Elites and outsell all PS3 games put together on its first day

GTA is old, boring and stale now, its so old now Im sure it was out on the Amiga computer about 20 years ago.

Halo 3 would totally destroy its sales and it would be especially bad for the PS3 if this was released at the same time as Halo 3.Whereas the 360 has shown it is now in a position where it can still sell huge amount of titles even when Two or more big games are released on the same day i.e Blue Dragon and Bioshock...

lol you do know what Sony is going to do just before or a few days after Halo 3 is released.... There going to drop the price, Phil Harrison hinted at it at E3 and he mentioned the month October which is the Uk release for Halo 3.

 » Stupid fantards....

I'm getting sick of this fanboyism, every forum there's an argument about which console is better and which one has the better game, this is so childish. You dumb Fantards dont realise that your a tool for sony and microsoft.

I'm in the gamers side NOT on sony and microsoft. Think about it, if halo was available for PS3 and MGS4 was available on 360 it would mean every gamers will get to play these games. It's a win win situation for gamers, the only losers here would be big coparate companies like sony + microsoft(not that they wont make any mone).

All i'm basicaly saying is games should be for all gamers not for exclusive to a single corprate company that take soo much money from you.

» Elite has more storage space and Halo 3 will sell more in its first day than all the PS3 games sold to date

Halo 3 will sell huge amounts and it will sell a lot of 360 Elites which has far more storage space than both the Two already dropped PS3s and the current 80 gig one, it is looking more like the Devs are going to use the big Harddrives in the consoles like they do on the PC, where most of the data is stored on the HD and the DVD just runs the copy protection etc so at the end of the day officially the 360 has the more space, as the devs use offical space so saying yer but I can add a bigger third party drive means crap to the devs only OFFICAL realesed drive space counts..

can devs use the 360 hard drives if they aren't guaranteed a hard drive in every console

 » Storage space huh

The PS3 can use Laptops hard drives, meaning the PS3 can have a Hard Drive of 250GB, The Elite comes with a 120GB Hard Drive, now I was never good at maths, but 250GB is bigger than 120GB Right?

» Lay off the HDD arguements guys? :)

Firstly Stealth! (not the real one obviously), devs are not going to dump most of the game data onto a HDD, so the amount of HDD storage is irrelevent to games like GTA4. At most, as seen with some PS3 games, the devs *may* allow users to dump 4-5GB of data for the purpose of improving load time. But that's about all.

And gtauk, Oblivion for the 360 uses the HDD for caching if it's present. So you don't need a HDD in every 360 before it can be used, they just need to design the software to be able to use it if it's there. However, if GTA4 becomes one of the few 360 games for which a HDD is required, then that solves that problem anyway (except for core users who will need to purchase a HDD to play the game).
