GameStop confirms 120 PS3 model release - Image 1With all the rumors spreading on the PS3 models, new and old, it's really difficult not to get confused. We got hold of new information that could probably shed some light into this matter.

Recently, GameStop held a conference where they explained that the 80 GB model was no longer going to be produced in order to give way for the coming of Sony's 120 GB (or possibly higher) model which is bundled with the Dual Shock 3 controller.

In addition, there hasn't been official date to when this improved model will be launched and ready for purchase. As for the price of the allegedly upcoming new model, there's still no information about it.

With all the information that was brought to light, Sony offered no comment again regarding this.
This new information certainly affirms the two rumors we previously reported: the discontinued production of the 80 GB model and the introduction of a 120 GB or higher model this year.

It seems that all the fine details will be released in due time, probably in the upcoming GDC. We'll be keeping you posted for more updates on this issue.

I think it'll cost as much as the 80 GB was, I think its possible. One thing I know they wont or shouldnt do is make it cost more then the 80 GB was, cause still no one is going to buy it.
I cant wait till they officially release the dualshock 3 though.

We will be posting information as soon as we are able to get them. Do come back for the updates.

i bet $5 canadian that this new ps3 is going to have some new bull***** (just like the psp) that the others cannot do. theres no *****in way that i'm paying 600.00+ for an "improved" system. i didnt do it with the psp, and im not doing it with the ps3.

I dont know why sony thinks we like just throwing away money. What am i supposed to do, trade in my 60g for 200.00 and spend another 400, for this "new" ps3? i know, i can just wipe my ass with my paycheck!

At least then my paycheck will be doing something usefull instead of lining the pockets of gamestop/$ony.

You wait and see b4 your start getting mad at nothing. I dont think it'll have anything "new" besides a bigger HD. Rumble controllers will be sold seperately also so dont get mad at that. Every ps3 should be able to handle anything unlike the PSP.
And if the ps3 got a new look (like ps3 slim or somthing lol) then I'd think that it would have new features, but thats not the case with this.

I agree with Eclipze. Rumble controllers will be available separately, and I doubt anything will be added to functionality. (It may get stripped down like the 40G was.) So, instead of buying a new system, get yourself a replacement HDD from Tiger or NewEgg, swap out, and buy separate DS3 controllers. Then you would have the equivalent (or better) of the new SKU.

I heard that it will not be the 120gb HDD but the 160gb HDD. And hopefully it will also have everything else from the 80gb

 » Conference?

What conference? Our big conference is in September. And then the DMs meet in Atlanta and Dallas for training. So what conference I ask? I will dig around today at work and see what I can find. But so far no emails or items in Back Office Inventory yet.

 » well...

from what i've heard, sony has developed a new 45nm cell processor... it takes about 3/4 the electricity usage as the 65 nm processor, but has twice the power apparently.. my guess is that they will integrate this into the 120 gig model.. but from what i've heard, they might not support backwards compatibility anymore... if sony wants to sell the ps3 more, they need backwards compatibility... whether it be hardware or emulated, they need it... i got my ps3 not only for ps3 games and blu ray movies, but also so that i could play my ps1 and ps2 games all on one console...

 » Um i don't get it....

How come when i last stated this could have full BC and stuff i got no smiley's on here and yet ibunkun stated something similar what i posted and get practically all smileys. Whats the deal. I swear people are abusing the smiley feature on here.

Anyway i think its possible for them to have Full BC this time around with this better model. I mean The production cost lowered from $800 to $400 and Sony has the new 45 cell chip and the 64nm and stuff. I can definitely see them bring back BC. I mean it wouldn't cost much and People will buy that think like Hotcakes, i mean people do want BC and i hope its not going to having less BC then the 60. I mean its a very good possibility. Anyone here agree with me.

 » Yep

I definitely agree with you, because if this model is the same price as the 80GB, has all the features of it, and retains backwards compatibility, I will buy it when I get a summer job. I'd like to pleh PS1+2 games pl0x :D
