Adam Mapleson. Gamer. Hero. - Image 1With all the talk about video games being a bad influence in general, it's good to hear about gamers actually stepping up to do the right thing - even if it means putting themselves in harm's way. Such was the case with Adam Mapleson, a quiet and gentle IT consultant who tried to prevent two armed robbers from making a clean getaway after a heist - and received gunshots to the chest at point blank for his efforts.

It's a typical case of an ordinary individual responding to the call of duty, really, even if it meant grievous bodily injury. Adam Mapleson was on his way to work when he saw two armed robbers, their faces obscured with scarves, assault a female security guard who was in the middle of reloading a cash machine.

Ignoring common sense and the instinct to run away from danger, he instead ran toward it - tackling both robbers in a mad dash to help the security guard. But even with the element of surprise, it wasn't long before things went completely downhill for our young gamer. Shots were fired, and Adam crumpled to the ground in a puddle of his own blood.

Thankfully, there's no bad ending in this tale of modern-day heroism. Recent news tell us that Adam's doing fine, recovering in a hospital bed, surrounded with loving family and friends. On the other hand, it's quite obvious that things didn't go as planned for the two robbers, with the stolen cash box having set off its security countermeasures: dousing its contents with indelible red dye, effectively rendering the money inside worthless.

An extraordinary feat of heroism from an ordinary human being, indeed. While some people can prattle on about a recent shooting and the culprit's already dubious connection to videogames, friends, family and even Adam himself states on his MySpace account that he's a true gamer at heart. Maybe this could shake some sense into those parties, but who knows?

One thing's for sure, though - Adam Mapleson saw what needed to be done, and he did it. Gamer? Yes. Hero? Definitely.

 » Gamer? Maybe. Hero? No.

A hero doesn't run into a situation with not knowing what to do and then doesn't stop the criminals at all.

They both would've been safe if they just let the robbers have the money since they would be caught eventually anyways. He rushed in there like he had a death wish which is pretty stupid no matter how you look at it.

for you to say his actions were stupid make me think your some what of a jackass....this guy took bullets in the chest for doing what was right and stopping an injustice from taking place and your going to call his actions stupid? Thats pretty pathetic in my opinon....especially coming from someone who would probably be a COWARD in the same situation.

Dumb fùck...
As long as they weren't gratuitously hurting the security guard he should have left them to it... For the following reasons ;
It wasn't his money. The money belonged to the bank. Banks have insurance. They wouldn't have got away with it anyway (red dye). Even if they did would it have stopped him sleeping?

   Re: Bob (Unregistered) - 2007-05-30
» It shouldnt matter that it wasnt his

Jesus christ how self centered can you be? It shouldnt matter whether it's his own, or someone elses stuff, would you like it if you got robbed and everyone else on your street stood there and let the robber pass, just because they werent going to lose anything? You dont have to gain something from your actions to have incentive to do it.

Besides, the guy was shot, chances are, that gun was pointed right at the security guard before he charged them. They might not have been hurting her at the time, but that's more than enough reason to get in the way.

OK the guy may not have thought it through thoroughly, but think about it yourself first. A gun was out, these guys were trying to get away. Would he have had time to stand there weighing out the pros and the cons of charging headfirst into them? Chances are he didnt.

The guy may not be a hero, I think that was just the writer glorifying what he's done, but it was an incredibly brave thing to do, and I can guarantee, most of you, especially the idiots criticising him for doing this, would have sat there in the nearest corner crying.

What I really want to know though, from you lot that have been saying he's stupid for interfering with a robbery. What's so stupid about helping someone who probably had a gun aimed at their head?

» » » Yo, buy both X360 & PS3 consoles [End of the Console War Debate]

So many losers online say their console (either PS3 or X360) is better. No, the PS3 hardware is better only because it’s newer; however, the deciding factor which will choose the winner of this console war is the content (games).
