It's not exactly an update for the recent rumors of a PlayStation 3 successfully running backups, but it's going in that direction. CJPC is sending word of the development of a PS3 TEST Backup Launcher, currently at version .001 Alpha. Here's CJPC's accompanying screenshot of the application's interface:

Hack: PS3 TEST Backup Launcher V.001 Alpha (Work in Progress) - Image 1

According to the developer, this application will enable users to copy games directly to the console's HDD. The launcher does so by copying the game files into a folder it creates in the HDD, much like how PSN game demos are loaded into the console. As CJPC further elaborated:

The games are then launched using a relevant call, such as sceNpDrmProcessExitSpawn or sys_game_process_exitspawn2 (depending on location) and the loader then passes control off to the game, where it is run from.

The bad news is that this launcher is still very much in the  pre-Alpha, and will only run on a Developmental PS3. It will not run on the console's retail version. That said, here's what the launcher can currently do:
  • Boot PS3 Games from HDD
  • Boot PS3 Games from DVD/BD-ROM
  • Copy Original PS3 Games from DVD/BD-ROM to HDD
  • Patch the executable on some games to run from HDD
Keep an eye out in case we pick up any new updates regarding this possibly ground-breaking news bit.

a PS2 launcher from the HDD!!!!

bought my ps3 to play ps3 games, not ps2 games. Thats why I really don't care about backwards compatability.

 » .

Thats also why we dont care what you bought your system for. I bought my 80gig for the full package, and im not gonna let my library of ps2 games just sit there. Only reason why people bash BC is because they couldnt get an 80gb or anything besides a 40gb.

This hack is also pointless. Hope anyone who uses this gets caught.

   Re: Eclipze_ - 2008-03-11
 » lol

I can say the same thing, I don't care what you bought your system for.. (it works both ways).. Before you jump to bash conclusions I have a 60GB ps3 with full BC. But in my opinion its useless to play ps2 games even if you have them there, the ps3 is meant to play ps3 games, next gen games. I wonder why people would buy a ps3 and play ps2 games? If you want to play ps2 games you might as well should've kept your ps2.. Its the future yet people want to stay stuck in the past.

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

"But in my opinion its useless to play ps2 games even if you have them there"
That can certainly be your opinion but it's not a well informed one.

"the ps3 is meant to play ps3 games, next gen games."
It was also meant to play not so NextGen PSN games and PS2 games.

"I wonder why people would buy a ps3 and play ps2 games?"
Would someone buy a PS3 for the sole purpose of playing PS2 games? I doubt it. But if you need scenarios as to why someone would play PS2 games on their PS3 here you go:

1. They still have the PS2 game and would like to play it again.
2. There are some PS2 games that they skipped and never played or just never had the time to play and want to play them now.
3. Lets now forget the games being made for the PS2 and NOT the PS3.

I'm all about #2, I'm currently playing FF12 as I never played it before. Next will be DMC3.

"If you want to play ps2 games you might as well should've kept your ps2"
That's a major assumption. You assume they owned a PS2. Plus you assume they have an unlimited amount of video/audio hookups in their entertainment system.

"Its the future yet people want to stay stuck in the past"
Stuck in the past? All of 1 year ago? Months ago if you count PS2 games being created that aren't for the PS3?

BC is about CHOICE. Why take choice away from people? That's silly.

   Re: Mr Toasty - 2008-03-12
 » eclipze...

There are people who sold their PS2 to buy a PS3, don't assume everyone has enough money, and what about people who had an Xbox or Gamecube instead of a PS2 last gen?

I can see ONLY playing ps2 games on a ps3, but I'm currently playing a couple ps2 games on my ps3 as well as PS3 games. Not to mention there are loads of games being released for both, with the PS2 version being cheaper to buy.

Your opinion is pretty ridiculous, you're one of those people that refuse to play old, (and good) games simply because of bad graphics huh.

 » Well

Unless theres some sort of exploit for original PS3's, then we can't do anything with this.

 » hey

we've got motorstorm and resistance for that, but that RSX memory got locked off...... probably why we can't anymore dumping. but maybe we can load from an ext. hdd.

So it runs on PS3's without a hypervisor/software security...
Way to go, PS3news! Again...

haha yeah I thought the same thing. Running a program on a dev kit is not hard. Duh, It is MADE for programming....

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-03-10
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

If it's not hard then why hasn't anyone else done it yet? Why has no one else encrypted the discs yet?

Exploring the HELL out of the dev units is how they'll find exploits for the retail units.

Duh!

   Re: J2Jack - 2008-03-10
 » Bollocks!

The dev units allow ANY code to be executed.
And this HAS been done, lurk moar!
There is no security on the devkits, it's really not gonna do a lot except develop a toolchain for when we can get the hypervisor on a retail PS3 to accept unauthorised code entirely.

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-03-10
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

Begin able to run ANY code has nothing to do with being able to run a copied RETAIL game disc. A lot of work had to be done before hand.

 » no bu

where does it say anything about PS2

also i hope backups wont be able to be played because its worth to save up for that 1 brilliant game than dl 100 of them and waste money playing a crap game on a newly purchased hdd never mind no PSN

but i do however up homebrew will be run and hopefully something can be sorted out between sony and there views of it

 » Stop hating guys.......

Well at least ps3news is trying and making progress. If they find an exploit on the ps3 this could easily run.If all goes well we may see a backup launcher before summer.I would love that since I got a 360,but I don't wanna be banned off online. So I'll just hack my ps3.Man a ps3 will be the best sytem ever hacked since u would be able to run homebrew(emulater, etc) HD movies, can make BR movies region free if u buy BR movies and don't dl them for free. Also the most improtant thing backups!

   Re: dragonracer900 - 2008-03-10
 » Re

You know that many people want systems hacked not to do backups, but to play isos of games they dont have. Too me I dont see the point of backups because blueray could play even if the disk is scratched. If it breaks then it may be the users fault do to not taking care of it.

Homebrew is important, because it lets the community to be able to create their own innovated games, but Sony might do the same as Microsoft did with xna, and letting others play the games on their xbox via download service. I would play a few dollars to play a game created by the community.

Why spend money on the system that may be useless once it is able to be hacked. You can be banned the same way as the 360. Just because online is free on the ps3 doesnt mean sony wont make any rules using their online service. So that was stupid to say u want the ps3 to be hacked and not the xbox just because of online.

 » Sigh...

You guys do realize that hacking into the Ps3 means a hell of a lot more than playing backup games? It means homebrew, too, which is a hell off a lot cooler!

You would pay like $600 for a PS3 so that you can play user created homebrew, sounds awesome......

   Re: Eclipze_ - 2008-03-11
 » where were you?

Cause if you didn't notice already the price dropped a while ago..

   Re: Mr Toasty - 2008-03-12
 » Soo

You'd pay $600 for a PS3 only to play games, and NOT want to get a little more out of it?

I guess some people are happy being sheep...

 » blAHH--like the obvious

yes..im not sure if this makes any sense or not..but isnt this obvious...the most memory u get on the ps3 so far is 80gb..and i know we can do this we can do that..and somehow people have more memory on the ps3 but honestly out of everyone who owns a ps3 ..who is willing to open their 600$ monster ( i refer to monster in this case in a good way :P) honeslty..we aint rich..so coming down to my most obvious point..an first gen PS3 owner had memory of either 60gb or 20gb on their psp..tell me something arent ps3 blu ray games 50 gb each?? ..so tell me where we going to get the space from..oh yea sure sell me an attacthment ur going to sell me for 200$ on the internet that i can connect to my ps3 and dload games and play..yes sir ..lets no buys games no..lets dload them..what we can afford a psp but cant afford games for it..we can afford a DS but cant afford games for it..we can afford a damn laptop and we cant afford the software to run it!!!..LOL wait the last part i disagree..who the fk is willing to pay 700$ for photoshop..like wtf...man use MS PAINT BOO YAHHHHHH

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-03-17
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

1. It's not MEMORY. It's Hard Disk Drive space.

2. You don't have to open up your PS3 "monster". The HDD slides into the unit from the side. The owners manual that comes with the PS3 shows you how to change out your HDD.
