Heads up, people - it appears that another developer may have found a way to hack into Sony's PlayStation 3. This latest attempt was reportedly pulled off by Spiker, who's managed to access the PS3's system files while running the console on firmware 2.17. According to the dev, here's how it was done.

I load the file up in Other OS, and it runs a check system run, and it shows I can get to the files, and they are free for the taking, I just need to write something to have them dump on my memory stick or some other place.

The hack was executed on a 60 GB NTSC region PS3. Spiker notes that he's still currently unable to view or edit the PS3's files. He has, however, managed to tweak the PS3's shutdown/boot up process, and its Blu-Ray drive.

We remind the readers that this hack it still in its very early stages, meaning there probably won't be a public release any time soon. That said, Spiker did post a video demonstrating the fw 2.17 exploit. Enjoy the clip, and be sure to visit again in case we pick up any more info regarding this project.

plus this is a load of crap. Why would i want to watch someone put a game into their PS3? That's not an exploit and this guy certainly isn't a "dev"

   Re: fiberwire - 2008-03-24
 » not a dev?

i don't think i've seen your awesome work that gives you the right to determine who is and isn't a developer. maybe you could show us sometime?

   Re: dodswm - 2008-03-24
 » duh...

i didnt say i was a dev, although i have made some apps.

This vid has proved nothing, is my point, so the person who made the vid has not "developed" anything...

 » Well

but he is on the right track for a dev.

 » NOT A DEV!!!

I have an easier way to make the power button an eject button, but you'd have to be able to use a soldering iron better than this guy programs.
This guy is obviously a joker...
by the way FIBERWIRE... I'd be very careful who you lip off to in these forums, some ppl here have contributed more to the homebrew community than your mouth ever will to anything, including your girlfriend... she told me so last night, lol
Anyways some people just come by these places to laugh at people like you who think shooting your mouth off on forums is a good living, go back to your 360 provided to you by your mommy's welfare cheque

What kind of Hack is this?!?! The only thing is that the "eject"button is broken.

 » hmmmm

That's funny, I don't see any booting of the OtherOS, or PS3 system files that are "free for the taking", or a way to write "something" to copy them to a memory stick. This guy just browsed youtube, found a video called "look how long it takes me to eject my ps3 game!". And this gets posted.... why exactly?

   Re: platon - 2008-03-24
 » yeah

That's crap. Like Silver-Tiger said, it's just his eject button that's broken. And there is NO hack, at least not right now. It's like it was on the PSP, lots of fake trash... then, one day, a working hack was on ALL the web pages and free to download. THEN the hack was for real. So we'll have to wait till it's BIG!

Seems like most of the commentors here merley just watched the video and didn't read the post.

I did read the post and watched the video he did not show us that he could edit system files. all that he did was have a ps3 with a broken eject button and claimed that he made it do that by editing the system files.

I am going to need to see more before i am a believer.

 » 2.20?

I wonder if he's going to try this on 2.20..
I don't think i'll update until that's been tested.

people are quick to say omg fake, this guy is crap, lot of people said the same thing about the wii zelda hack, hmmm how did that turn out? o yea, linux wii channel soon. i say this guy is onto something, for the better, eventualy, if i was this guy i would read all these comments and in my release shame you in a welcome message in the app
shame on you! tut tut.
this point of the app wasnt to show he could load a disk, it was the show he can change the way the disk drive works, which can lead to many things, modified DVD drives could allow you to load DC games on PCs to back up games
