Old-schoolThink you've got l337 h4xx0r skillz? Here's a chance to prove it AND get a PS3 for free.

All you have to do is hack the PS3 that this website is running on and you're on your way to winning the PS3 with all of its default accessories (its HDD has been replaced with a 160GB HDD) and pre-installed Linux (Fedora core 5 PPC + PS3 add-on), an HDMI cable, and a copy of Resistance: Fall of Man.

Now everyone can talk the talk but this time you've got to prove that you can walk the walk. In order to prove that your hacking job was successful, you have to replace the default image in the website (a baby holding a PS3 box) with the JPEG image located in the root user's home directory, inside the "ps3_challenge" subfolder.

You also have to announce your victory in the ACBM forum (the link to the discussion thread is in the website) and send an email to Shimpinomori. In case more than one person is able to do a successful hack job, the one whose email arrived in Shimpinomori's inbox first will be judged as the winner. You will also have to put a text file with your name and postal address in the root user's home directory, inside the "ps3_challenge" subfolder.

If you wanna win the PS3, you've gotta do all the above and nothing more. Any alteration of the PS3's files other than the ones specified by the guy who started the contest is not permitted (obviously). Also, according to the site's owner, You must do a "clean" hacking job : no DOS, no "dirty" attack which saturate the internet tubes. Moreover, do not attack other machines located in the same subnetwork."

Well, there it is, boys and girls. Good luck to those who wanna take a stab at the PS3. Click on the 'via' link below to check out the website.

Its not the ps3 firmware. It's the linux inside the ps3 you have to hack.

» Wow say its nearly impossible

Linux by far is one of the most secure OS.

If someone managed to hack this PS3 then it would make front page news over the world because he/she would have found a new exploit in the Linux OS itself.

You can be safe this is a joke to hackers as this is a contest that probably wont be won by anyone.

Cause if someone hacked into the PS3 running Fedora, the same exploits would be existing in just about all builds of Fedora 5 and possibly 6. Red Hat would be in a press frenzy.

 » I agree

...but Sony is paranoid. If this contest actually starts, expect SOny to release firmwares like crazy.

   Re: Gamer - 2006-11-26
 » Um....

Sony can't release firewares for Fedora, as Fedora is a different distribution from the OS the XMB uses.

 » not really

The PS3 add on for linux is not hardened and most likely full of bugs seeing as it was rushed out. This has prolly introduced a whole host of exploits. On top of this the easiest way would still be social engineering because no matter how secure an OS is someone needs to be able to access it and they are the weakest link.

 » linux is secure but...

yes linux is very secure, but if not properly setup and configured can be like leaving the door unlocked, its still up to the person who put it on the ps3 to make sure it all locked up.

» Cheap PS3- Real or Hoax?

http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-video-games-consoles-we-are-selling-PS-3-AT-400USD-XBOX-360-AT-400USD-W0QQAdIdZ7888232

Found this post at Kijiji. The guy says that he will sell a ps3 for $450USD shipping included. Contacted him and he is in greece and wants money transfer.

1. First Greece didnt get their supply of units.
2. And second 450 USD seems a bit cheap for a new console.

Is this guy a hoax or what?

Those are scammers, they will want you to send the money first and when you do, you'll never hear from them again.
