Happy Holidays! 80GB PS3 for US$499 possible, say analysts - Image 1Analysts are now more convinced that the PS3 might be getting a price cut soon. In fact, Michael Pachter has been specific enough to have noted that the 80GB PS3 units could be sold for as low as US$ 499 right in time 2007's holiday season. Pachter predicts:

We note that Sony recently acknowledged that it will no longer produce its 60GB PS3, and we expect the price of the 80GB PS3 to be reduced to $499 before the holidays, maintaining a premium SKU at that price point.

Furthermore, Pachter still remains confident in his previous analysis that yet another price drop could happen early next year once Grand Theft Auto 4 and Metal Gear Solid 4 finally roll out.

A hardware price cut during the release of such anticipated titles would definitely trigger a spike in sales later on. And seemingly, simExchange analyst Jesse Divnich concurs with Pachter's prediction.

After examining more closely the hardware sales of the PS3 over the last 6 months we have come to the conclusion that the PS3 cannot remain competitive in the current North American environment at its current retail offering at $499 and $599. To remain competitive against the other consoles, the Sony PS3 would have to reduce its 80GB SKU by $100 down to $499.

Divnich explains that if Sony weren't to announce a price drop, they might go for other options like bundling free games with the PS3 unit. This, after all, has been a popular trend during the holidays.

They need to do something. At least bundle in a better game than motorstorm. Even downloadable content can't make that horrible game any better.

An XBOX 360 with HDMI is now only $350, so sony expects people to spend almost double that?

While you seem far more rational now, your math still sucks.

 » Oh yeah

Thats your opinion MCS about motorstorm.

Well i have a feeling there will lower the price after all Sony knows what there doing, i mean there already catching up to the wii in sales in japan. Its only a matter of time.

 » maybe..

they are just waiting to sell all the 60gb ones because they do not want to lower it to 400 to put the 80gb one in 500 now... maybe when all the 60gb are out of stock and in retailers they will put the price tag of the 80gb one in 500 before holidays...... is just a 20 gb of difference between the 2 ps3... that could be real don't you think? anyway that's just what I think

   Re: gohst (Unregistered) - 2007-09-04
 » your right

Someone_PR, spot on. Sony wants to sell out the 60gb and make enough for 80gb during the summer holiday when the gaming market doesnt make that much money as they would have during christmans. I think they will lower the price very soon and of course they need to since microsoft did. When they do knock
£100, u can bet ps3 is gonna dominate the console market. Xbox 360 might have the better games over all this year but from next year and on PS3 will retain it's spot as NO.1. I'm not a sony fanboy, i own an xbox 360 and i'm going to buy a ps3 this christmas and all i'm saying is that playstation 3 is a better machine, i mean i've had tons of problem with 360, one right now being the disc scratch issue. If you only had seen my geas of war disc.

» Not bothering with Sony consoles this gen

I dont own either machine but Im getting the 120 gig Elite before Christmas, hopefully with the release of Halo 3 and Mass Effect not interested in GTA IV always found that game boring, Bioshock and Blue Dragon also look excellent hopefuly MS will be kind enough to bundle Gears with the Elite soon..that would make me even happier..

 » really?

I dont own a PS3 for the simple reason there hasnt been anything game wise that has gave me reason to pick one up yet. This is no doubt going to change.
But having 2/3 price drops within the first 12/18months just seems to come across desperate.
The PS3 is far from expensive but I guess when Parents see ps3 $600, Xbox360 $350 dollars it does.

I'm more than willing wanting to pay for a lowered PS3 price, rather than the steep $599.

I still dont like the release dates for MGS4 and GTA IV since they are like 2 days apart, that could really ruin the way both games sell.

» Elite is the best bet this gen

Th Elite truly is a bargain compared to the PS3 now. There is no argument its just fact......

And lol whoever up there said the PS3 is catching up with the Wii, it had ONE good week because of a big title launch that proberly cost them more to make than the sales of the actual game.

Oh and heres the sales figures this week for the Wii and the PS3 -

Wii 72,749 UP 11% on last weeks sales
Wii total sales 3,457,805

PS3 20,165 DOWN by 13% on last weeks sales
PS3 total sales 1,128,868

At this rate it will take years to catch the Wii.........

 » Original and complete report

I am the founder of the simExchange. Thanks for covering the story that was covering our report. Our original and complete report is available on our website for free: http://www.thesimexchange.com/research-report.php?id=3&r=1

Just to add, our analysis examines the sales of both the Xbox 360 and PS3 for the next few months as forecasted on the simExchange prediction market (http://www.thesimexchange.com/index.php?r=1). The forecasts are those of thousands of gamers, developers, and investors trading on a virtual stock market and are not the forecasts of an individual analyst. Our findings show a widening margin between Xbox 360 and PS3 sales in the coming months. However, since our long-term forecasts imply equivalent market share for the two consoles, we believe Sony will ultimately act to narrow this margin--this may include cutting the price of the console or bundling games to add value. Thank you again for interest in our report.
