Really happy holidays: 80GB PS3 for US$ 499, 40GB for US$ 399 confirmed? - Image 1Remember just last week when Michael Pachter made a prediction that the 80GB PS3 would go for as low as US$ 499 this Christmas? Well, it's either a) he's a very good forecaster, b) Sony listened to his theories, or c) he just got lucky. Lucky as he might have gotten or otherwise, if this rumor proves true, then we ourselves get lucky too!

A reliable source (with a good track record too) close to Ars Technica has just revealed of Sony's listing of console prices this holiday season. According to their insider, we get the following:

  • 80GB PS3 for US$ 499
  • 40GB PS3 for US$ 399
  • 80GB/40GB PS3 bundled with a Spider-man 3 Blu-ray
  • PS2 for US$ 99
Whoa nelly. The first figure cuts too close (actually, it fits exactly) with Pachter's prediction: US$ 499 for a 80GB unit. But what a lot of you might be eying right now is that 40GB for 400 bucks. If that's not a bargain, then we don't know what is. The existence of this "low-end" 40GB unit was talked about previously, so this could just be it - and back then, it was already predicted to cost US$ 399. That PS2 price cut might also drive sales on its own as well. What about the PSP?

Regardless, it's only September and we've got a long way to go 'til the holiday season hits. And until Sony official makes any announcements, this gets stashed on top of the Rumor pile for now.

Thanks to Jonathan Waters for the tip!

*Update* We just got whiff from Next-Gen that they've contacted Sony about this certain rumor. As these kinds of rumors go, the response that Sony gave was the regular "It's our policy not to comment on rumors or speculation" staple line. And as always, the only thing we can glean from this is that Sony still hasn't confirmed nor denied the existence of the price cuts and 40GB PS3.

Wow. PS3 for $399. Wait, does this still have blu-ray in it. I heard that a 40gb may not have blu-ray.

Re: Real Gambler (Unregistered) - 2007-09-10
» No BluRay, no games.... Simple

And since there's not $100 difference between a 40Gb and a 80Gb, one of those two price is absolutely wrong.
Another rumor started by Microsoft to stop the sales of the PS3 because they are too good. Now people will believe this and wait and wait and wait.

Sure, the 80GB at $499 is around the block, but forget the other one!

   Re: xman (Unregistered) - 2007-09-10
» no price cut for you!

all sony will give you is more bundles and starter packs with crappy games! motorstorm blows ass! they lose too much money and don't have any games to make it back. sony will lose big time this holiday!

   Re: Stealth! - 2007-09-10
 » WFT....@Xman

Your serious right, did you know they sold some of their shares and got back 4 billion dollars. So they wont be losing money you moron, its because of that there able to lower the price maybe further after holidays. Stop being a pro xbot fanboy. Your just as bad as MCS and Axo, though lately MCS has calm down a bit.

   Re: hermit (Unregistered) - 2007-09-10
 » blu-ray

there's no way sony could make a ps3 without blu-ray... for the same reason why 360 cant make any games for hd-dvd. you ahve to go with the lowest common denominator. and for 360 that means DVD and no HDD support standard. for ps3 taht means blu-ray and HDD support.

a ps3 without blu-ray would mean every game would need to be released not on bluray.

   Re: dopey (Unregistered) - 2007-09-10
 » omg..noobs!

please have some common sense!! how is it not going to have blue ray?!?!
its like buying a dvd player without the dvd format supported. omg. i cant believe people are that stupid.

PS3 for $399. But does this mean it will not have blu-ray in it. I heard a rumor that a 40gb would not have it.

If it didnt have blu-ray then it wounldnt have any games

ps3 games are on bluray disks..

 » thanks god...

u said it first because any with common sense will know if it didn't have a blu ray tray then how u will play games? what u will do? play ps2 games only or what? is just less har drive memory.. like 60 and 80 gb ones.. have 100 dollars of difference too... but like I said before.. they need to sold out the 60gb one first to low down the 80gb ones because they don't want to lower more the 60gb PS3...

bluetooth?

   Re: mohaas05 (Unregistered) - 2007-09-10

it already has bluetooth and i highly doubt they'd remove it since some accessories use it.

   Re: gtauk - 2007-09-10

some minor accessories, for instance... the flipping controller!!

   Re: hush404 - 2007-09-10
 » LOL RE gtauk

LOL- yeah!! Really tho man!

All these "rumors" going around are retarded!!!!

Blu-Ray CAN'T be taken out, it's the only format PS3 games come in (besides downloads).

Blue tooth also CAN'T be taken out, it's the technology that the controllers use to work.

If this 40gb model does come out you can be sure it includes features such as Wi-fi, media card slots and so on, cuz Sony released the 20gb without those and it didn't sell. Thus they wouldn't release the same thing with dbl the HD space expecting it to sell.

   Re: ,,, (Unregistered) - 2007-09-10
 » ,,

@hush404

What you're saying is just dumb.
Why would they have a 100$ price difference if it's only 40GB HDD difference..? They wouldn't.
If this 40GB really is coming (and I highly doubt it) then it will be like the 20GB version but just a slightly bigger HDD.

   Re: mohaas05 (Unregistered) - 2007-09-10
 » ...

the controller uses bluetooth? i thought only headsets and keyboards and stuff used it. i thought the controller uses some other wireless signal. oh well i guess it is pretty important then.

   Re: dopey (Unregistered) - 2007-09-10
 » omg

bluetooth and blu ray cannot be taken!! no mater wat. Same with the hdmi port. CANT BE TAKEN OFF!!! those are the main features used t operate the ps3!!

i heard that the 40 gig ps3 wont have ps2 support. Thats probaly the 100 dollar difference.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-09-11
 » .

The only things they can further take out to reduce costs are WiFi and the memory card readers. The blutooth needs to stay unless they decide to go with USB or 2.4 Ghz controllers, which they won't.

 » Interesting Predictions

Hey, I heard that the reason for a 40 gig is it's cheaper to put 40 gigs of space at a time in a hard drive than the 40 + 20 that made the 60 gig that's why there is talk of a 40 gig. This could be a way for Sony to save more money. Also, even with 40 gigs it still has more than the 360 premium which would be 50 cheaper if this rumor is true.

by Mister Common Sense (Unregistered) - 2007-09-10
 » I don't believe it

Sony said they wanted to stay with a single SKU because the 20gb PS3 sold so horribly.

I think there will be more bundles, even though I hate them. If you're lucky, there may be a $549 motorstorm bundle this year.

   by Thabor (Unregistered) - 2007-09-10
 » Don't think so.

The 40GB doesn't make sense. Regardless of the manufacturing cost, they would be completely undercutting the 80GB system, as you can replace the drive at retail for less than $100.

   Re: ackeejag (Unregistered) - 2007-09-10
 » not really

most people dont know that they can do this much less how. hard core gamers or people that are pc literate will go and buy the 40gb and replace the HD if they want but the common gamer will se the difference as a bargain.

 » COOL! but...

What about the 40g? If there is ONLY the HD capacity, then it's a bargain. If it have those stupid lacks the 20gig had, NO WAY for me!!!

I'm in for the 80gig if it's not only the capacity that changes... Maybe the 80gig still come with motorstorm then? so the 40g is not a bargain, it's the 80gig? dunno.

I'll understand when we'll have more info I suppose.

I really hope that the 80g still comes with motorstorm! :D Or that the 40gig is tha same as the 80 with half the memory (I don't really care about that).

 » This makes sense

To steal MS's thunder this holiday, they make a cheaper PS3 for the people who want the top games this holiday. The 40gb will most likely not have the card readers or HDMI. Or both. I think that they will include wireless internet, only because that was the big difference between the 60 and the 20 (besides HDD size) I think this is a positive move on Sony's part. Now I know that my other friend without a PS3 may pick one up now.

   by Geo (Unregistered) - 2007-09-10
» They should have HDMI for upscaling

For the 40GB they need upscaling of DVDs via HDMI, so HDMI should be standard, card readers...meh, who cares. I use it but some people may not see the need for card slots. It's a plus, not a necessity.

by holy crap (Unregistered) - 2007-09-10
 » daaaaamn

So lets see.. it hasnt been a year yet since the PS3 has been out and so far we have seen 20gig, 60gig, 80gig and now a possible 40gig SKU for the PS3. This is not even including the bundled versions.

If there is anything that screams out 'holy crap were lossing money and not enough people are buying out console' than what the hell does? Dont get me wrong, I love my PS3, i love playing warhawk and resistance online and I wish the mass majority would just go and pick one up so I wouldnt have to worry about it becoming obsolete in a few years. This shiet scares the bajebus out of me. I just hope and pray Heavenly sword lives up to the hype unlike Lair did. Then were really in a big mess once Halo 3 and Mass effect come out.

Re: snakes on uranus (Unregistered) - 2007-09-10
 » so....

core, pro, pro w/ hdmi, elite... sound familiar?

Re: Jesus Christ (Unregistered) - 2007-09-11
 » Yea...

The difference between the 360 and PS3 though, is that Sony is constantly whining that more than one SKU could confuse the consumer, then they do stupid ***** like this.

Furthermore, its just core pro elite. You can't count another sKU because it has HDMI, that's like calling a whopper a whopper with pickles.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-09-11
 » yay

The reviews for Heavenly Sword are good! I'm getting it as my first PS3 game. The only complaint I read is it's pretty short at 6-8 hours to complete. They even managed to use sixaxis controls in a way that doesn't ruin the gameplay.

Re: What common sense is really about - 2007-09-11

Warhawk was the first game i bougt and it's extremely good!
   by senjutsu (Unregistered) - 2007-09-10
»  suppose it's almost official now

Sony always say: There is no plan to... when it's false, and they normally say: We cannot comment on... When it's true! :D

Still, I wonder if the 40g will have less functions.. if it have less stuff, like the 20g had, I'll buy the 80, if not, I'll buy the 40. :D

   by gamesadict (Unregistered) - 2007-09-11
 » hmmm

i knew it, if they were to release a "low end" PS3 it had to be a 40GB one. But now I wonder what they should remove to make it cheaper...

What if they did bring out a 40 gig ps3, but with a HD dvd drive or cheap multiformat drive as well as remove bluetooth and wifi?

   by the by - 2007-09-11
 » @dopey

the ps2 support is done via a software emulator now so its highly doubtful sony will ditch the ps2 support for the 40 gig sku!! unless you are referring to the now redundent emotion chip!!!

as for lifeline, its doubtful theyre going to put a HD-DVD or a dvd multiformat drive as that would mean that

1)that you wouldn't be able to play any of the games and
2) it would cost a lot more for a multiformat hd drive than just a bluray and besides? why would they??? sony wants people to buy bluray!!! not hd-dvd!!!
