Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots screenshot - Image 1The sky's the limit for Hideo Kojima, as fans of his Metal Gear Solid series among others would know. Such expression is no understatement, since for the mastermind behind the most popular stealth action title and head of Kojima Productions, even the massive 50GB space the Blu-ray disc offers is not enough for his Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriot on the Sony PlayStation 3.

In an interview, Kojima explained that his team had to compress many elements of Metal Gear Solid 4 to make it fit in the disc. While they managed to squeeze the game into Blu-ray, Kojima said the quality could have been better if there was more capacity to work with.

Just recently, it was announced that Metal Gear Solid 4 will be released on June 12 worldwide, with each version of the game having region-specific voice overs. In other words, given Blu-ray's size, it still wasn't possible to add Japanese voices in American versions of the game and vice versa.

I applaud you Mr. Kojima.

   Re: Charlybob - 2008-03-02
 » Why is it awesome?

All these comments are idiotic. Why does taking 50Gb of space automatically make a game awesome?

If anything, I'd be more wary of the game because of it. How can any company make 50GB of quality stuff? They can't, it's borderline impossible. It's either got to be filled with crap, or there will have been so much focus put into resource heavy things like graphics, it must have deflected attention from other sections of the game.

Now I'm not saying the game's going to be bad, quite the contrary, what I'm saying is, I can't see how they could have filed a 50GB disk without the actual game suffering.

I would be quite happy to be proved wrong in this, but to have filled a 50GB disk, something has to have happened which is going to kill the game slightly from what it could have been.

   Re: spicyhamster - 2008-03-02
 » it just means

that there is fifty gigs worth of content in this game. given kojima's track record, I think it would be pretty hard to say that any part of his last MGS game is going to be anything less than exceptional. fifty gigs of kojima-quality content is always a good thing.

   Re: superflyguy - 2008-03-02
 » @charlybob

The game used so much space because they had uncompressed audio files and other things like that.

   Re: Stealth! - 2008-03-02
 » @Charlybob

You really need to buff up on your understanding of Blu-ray and why this game is taking up that much space.

Most of the space is really uncompressed audio, Video and graphics.

And the gameplay is also what is taking up the rest of the space. Have you watched an Uncompressed Video compared to a compressed one? Or a uncompressed Audio compared to compressed one?
Anyone who has heard the difference, like myself, can tell you How amazing the quality is with uncompressed material is than with.

So there's no doubt this game will be a master piece worth your money.

For him to want more space is actually amazing. Kojima please don't compress it, use multiple discs. I don't care if you have to use 1 more, do it, we will appreciate trust me. compressed material isn't right for this great game.

 » You people are sheep.

Pure unadulterated nonsense. ANYONE should be able to fit a full game into 50GB. That's utter BULL*****.

   Re: GamefreQ - 2008-03-09
 » FreePlay

FreePlay never lies. He's still right. He knows everything. Uncompressed or compressed, there is no way it can't fit on a 50 GB disk. A compressed movie of 2 hours would be about 700 MB whist an uncompressed movie of 2 hours may hit up to 3-4 GB or so. Make it High definition and you'll be topping up to 10 GB. Some of the most complex game engines ever have made up to 20 GB MAX. Either he added a lot of padding, he's bull*****ting us to create hype for the game, or he's added over 6 hours of uncompressed pre-rendered high definition cut-scenes which is not even possible. Since most of it is rendered in real time anyways. FreePlay is right. Anyways, he could make a dual-layered Blu-Ray disk to hit up to 100 GB of space if he needed it. This is called HYPE*****.

 » 50 Gb??

I though that there was a quad layer Blu-Ray Disk giving it 100GB. The PS3 would only need a firmware update is what I believed that I had read.

   Re: Clixt - 2008-03-01
 » yeah but..

i dont think sony would do that so soon just for MGS4. Kojima productions should have made a 2 disc 50gb MGS4 instead of compressing it.i would pay a $100+ game as long as it has superb game play+graphics+story.

   Re: Lifeline - 2008-03-02
 » Yeah right..

Sounds like they are just trying to prove a point here.

A standard Bluray disc can indeed hold 100Gb data capacity, 50Gb PER SIDE double sided without the need of a firmware update!! So having 2 discs is premature.

   Re: ~~ - 2008-03-02
 » ~~

There apparently were 4layer bluray beta discs that could be played back on 'normal' bluray players with only the need of a little firmware update.

No dual sided bullcrap.

   Re: Lifeline - 2008-03-02
 » Oh Ok..

Dual Sided Bullcrap indeed!

Ok, try this one for size, Ritek, a company involved in the mass production of Blank optical media came up with the 10 layer Bd process which could hold 250Gb of data on a single sided BD, 500Gb dual sided. Such a large capacity disc could easily hold MGS4 and MGSO with uncompressed Video and Audio.

Weither or not the PS3 BD drive can utilize such a large capacity BD is a different matter.

   Re: jrm125 - 2008-03-02

They're using the 25 GB version of the disc.

Dont they still have time to change that? Put it on two disks if its a problem, but why the hell would you say it "could" be better when you still have time to "make" it better.

   Re: Eclipze_ - 2008-03-01
 » Another thing

I dont think it took up all that space.
Think about how much you can fit into 50GB's.
I think I cant understand killzone 2 taking up that space.
Ryan paton (how ever you spell his last name) said before that the audio in Mgs4 was fully uncompressed audio so it sounds perfect, That makes me wonder why would they compress other things? I dont think they would compress visuals...

All I can say is watch killzone 2 come out on one disk, then you'll know if this was true or not.

Anyways if this is true or not I still thing this game will be perfect. But I think (even if this were true) that they should'nt say this to the public. Why would you say the quality COULD have been better to people?

So this should put to rest any rumors of MGS4 coming to the Xbox 360, unless of course this youtube video becomes a reality:

   Re: Naroon Kasui - 2008-03-01
 » .

It was never coming to 360 and never will. Kojima has said this, plus the 360 cant really handle it so meh.

Now if they took up THAT much space, they were just being too *****y with the compression methods. They probably made the game with NOTHING compressed, then went back and compressed a few things to make it fit. MGS4 doesn't have the best gfx so far, so I don't see how they filled up 50gb that fast. The game wont be THAT big.

   Re: ~~ - 2008-03-02
 » ~~

How about umcompressed 7.1 and 5.1 audio on the discs ?

Can take up a lot of space, quite fast.

   Re: Naroon Kasui - 2008-03-02

Oh of course. Since the MGS games are 90% story and 10% gameplay.

Just saying.

Your just saying your opinion. I had no problem with the controls before (I was use to them). But you should say PAST MGS games, because they fixed gameplay on this one.

 » 200GB

They are making BluRay disks that have 200GB in size. TDK has been developing it for a while. If a game like MGS4 can't fit onto 50GB of space, think of the games that can't fit onto 200GB of space. There's one thing for sure: no pirate would really be willing to wait for 50GB of a game to download instead of running out and renting/buying it. ;)

   by Popson - 2008-03-02
 » Hmm

Considering a game like Bioshock can fit on a standard dvd and still reek of superb quality, i doubt kojima is seriously having problems fitting mgs4 on a bluray disk. Most games don't even top 10gb.

Either way MGS4 is going to be the first big reason to own a ps3.

   by Afa - 2008-03-02

50GB BD is now, developments are going all the way to 200...

and supposingly even BD Players u got now can still play the new ones once they come out...

and DW about Kojima taking too much stuff out for the 2008 MGS4..
there is no doubt there will be a MGS4: SUB... like SUBSTANCE and SUBSISTANCE which could eventually going super BDs

I bet ,they are saying that because they didn't have enough time to put something into or it will be too short or something . I bet its because of one of those reasons.

Anyways i waited too long for this game and im still waiting , hopefully it will be amazing even though all that !

   Re: Eclipze_ - 2008-03-02
 » too short?

I seriously dont think so, Mgs is a game that always has a good/long story.

And what we've always seen is even if they dont put somthing they'll put it in the subsistance/+ version of the game. They've done it for all mgs games so far so I dont think their going to stop with mgs4.

If they had 2 scale it down to fit on d ps3 den how wud dey b able 2 fit it on aregular dvd disc for the xbox

   Re: eggwonder - 2008-03-02
 » well...

they could start by compressing everything on the disk, then they could start taking out things that are unnecessary(like bonus content or hd cg videos and etc.), then take away more stuff and use an extra dvd disc or two or three.(would be kinda annoying for 360 users to disc swap tho.)

   Re: theaceoffire - 2008-03-03
 » 2 or 3?

Assuming that 360 owners would be happy with a gimped game, that is still 6.25 Dual layer DVD's you are trying to compress.
Getting it down to 4 would be astounding unless you really start hurting the quality.
   by crsa3000 - 2008-03-02
 » HD Pre Load

Just wait for how much hard disk space you'll need to make this game run smoothly without load times. I am hoping that they do have a preload function to speed it up, but not to take up a whole hard disk. Maybe they can load sections of the game at a time. Or even better, maybe they have coded this game to run fast straight from the disk.

   by xXPedroMaxXx - 2008-03-02
 » lol...

so if 50gb its not enough... so theres really no limit to what Kojima can do... anyways, the game must have a lot of stuff to fill the blu-ray, Also I think it must be the first PS3 game to fill a BD :) .

   by theninjashark - 2008-03-02
 » to you charlybob

filling a BD with different content on each part of the disc gives BETTER quality than it would if you were to dual write everything on the disc kind of like what happened with oblivion. load times on oblivion WERE faster and the game play wasn't all that smooth and it was choppy. MGS:4 will be very smooth and it will be the first ps3 game to fill a BD. and mgs 4 and mgso are two completely different titles on completely different discs. different system skus for both. also with it filling a PS3 disc, 360 has a 10% chance on getting the game as well, 4% chance without the HD-DVD drive.

 » There's no way it's going to 360

Kojima won't accept a gimped version to be released on the 360, unless Konami really forced him to the brinks. It's a shame if this gimped version ever gotten release to the 360. It's a disrespect to him. Kojima is a perfectionist, I think even the PS3 version does not satisfy him 100%...lol, maybe the PS4 will realize his vision of MGS with 1TB disks and Cell 2 running at 8Ghz with 8GB of RAM. (j/k)

hey you never know how much things can change from now untill the time PS4 comes out. Just think about when you got your ps3 (if you had one), at the start you were amazed at what you saw compared the ps2. Imagine how this is going to be when ps4 gets released. Every game will be looking like crysis at their minimum ^_^.

 » MGS was 2 Discs - 50gig? Not a surprise.

MGS was two discs for the PSX and back them it was huge game - so Why be amazed at the 50gig game Kojima has produced? As we advance developers will just use the system resources at its max as well as the capacity of the media. So ask yourself if a plain blank CD costs you $100 per say, wouldnt you use the the 700MB capacity to store y
