Hideo Kojima - Image 1Anticipation has reached fever pitch after Metal Gear Online beta codes were passed around, since that event marked the first step to Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots' much awaited release on the Sony PlayStation 3. However, it seems series creator Hideo Kojima of Kojima Productions himself is not stoked, saying the game fell short of what his team wanted to create.

"The original vision was to go ten steps further, the reality was just one step, which isn't to say we didn't progress," said Kojima in his latest interview with UK-based Edge magazine. He expressed his dissatisfaction in Metal Gear Solid 4, stating visuals and other technical aspects such as map size failed to accomplish his original vision.

Kojima looked back to when Metal Gear Solid 4's engine was revealed at the Tokyo Game Show - the time when his team thought of the Sony PS3 as a dream machine - and noted that the powerful console turned out to have restrictions. He then explained:

I remember saying three years ago that we wanted to create something revolutionary, but in reality we couldn't really do that because of the CPU. We're using the Cell engine to its limit., actually.

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing the PS3 machine, it's just that we weren't really aware of what the full-spec PS3 offered - we were creating something we couldn't entirely see.

I guess this means that the next gen after PS3 will be more suitable to create his "ideal" vision of this game... never mind - i know this game will be 100 times better than the Latest PS2 counterpart of the game

» a lot of these statements..

about using the CPU at 100% capacity are actually misleading. Sure it probably is using 100% but that doesn't mean it's using it efficiently. If these statements were applied to the development of PS2 it would have meant the PS2 games would have never progressed much further from launch games which obviously they did. Which leads me to believe that without time constraints and with further developments Kojima could indeed make the game he had originally invisioned.

... True

I remember last year before Ninja Gaiden came out for the PS3, reading a magazine interview and the developer claiming that he got some of the dev PS3's to overheat because he was pushing the hardware so hard. But, --I'm sorry-- I've since seen a LOT more impressive games than Ninja Gaiden Sigma on the PS3. In the same fashion, we'll see better than MGS4 later down the line, too. But, I also suspect this is a bit of a ruse, to get people excited for the future: that MGS4 will be spectacular, and now Kojima will have us wondering what could possibly be next if his vision was "limited".

» couldn't have said it better myself Raven

Developers who say "we're using 50% of the cpu" are just blowing smoke. It's all about the efficiency

 » this is the same...

that he says with metal gear 3 and then a lot of games came out and better... is just is too early to said that. Now killzone what will use? 200% of ps3 power? the cell is just too difficult to develop in it and it's too early to say that...

 » ..

i wouldnt say its too early to state that, I believe he pushed the cell to its limit with what he has to work with, other games to come out in years will have updated dev kits and so will be able to do certain things easier and more efficiently. I hope when they make a special release of this game in the near future (Substance, Subsistance, .......?) they update some more things and add more cool stuff!

poor hideo kojima... maybe he should keep making these... awsome games untill he is able to create his dream... yeh maybe he should make another one to top this one ^_^

Maybe he doesn't really want to quite the series. Lets hope he changes his mind.

Why does he hate the PS3 so much?!? Doez hez not knowz the PS3 iz more powerfulz then the worldz super computerz? Has he not seen Killzone 2? It's the best looking game that will ever be created, ever. It makes Crysis look like a Wii game. Microsoft must of paid him to say that. Damn MS and their evil money.

   by NarooN - 2008-04-20
 » look at this.

He said the exact same thing when he was doing MGS2. "we didnt do our ideal version of the game, we pushed the PS2 to it's limits".

MGS3 came. "we pushed the PS2 to it's limits. it wont get any better than this". When tons of other games at the time had bigger areas in some cases and much better graphics.

Now he's talking about MGS4. And I guess Killzone 2 is using 300% of the cell. It's the only explanation.

Sorry Kojima, but you just don't want to admit that your engine is the problem, not the Cell.

   Re: Someone_PR - 2008-04-20
 » like I said

he always said that and I think isn't his engine or him or the developers... it like the history of the playstation, isn't too easy to develop with and we see his full potential almost in the end of that console cycle

   Re: MADMAN-_-zZ - 2008-04-20
» yeh it might be the engine..

I woulnd't go so far to say he can't admit something though, im sure the engine can push more but maybe the cell limits what he can do with his engine... if that makes sense, so yeh if he used a different engine that works with the cell more then he could go further but he has this engine which cell limitates and so he says, cells fault, but if he was in denial then why would he make this statement, I say he's telling the truth!

Remeber Kojima is an Artist (and what an artist) He is never happy of his work because theres allways that "Something" That needs to be done, believe me i have seen it happen with a lot of people that make wonderfull plays

This just makes me want to play the game already, just to see why he's not satisfied...

» MGS4 does not mean PS3 is maxed out

What he means is that the PS3 is pushed to its limits within the confines of his engine's limits. He did everything he could do in the confinement of his engine which the game runs on. The engine cannot tap out more powerful from the Cell, however that doesn't mean there aren't other ways of doing things with the Cell which can surpass what Hideo currently can do. There are better developers out there, keep in mind Hideo Kojima is not responsible for programming the game, he's the mastermind behind the story, the script writer so to speak. He doesn't deal with the technical side of things. It could also mean that his programmers are maxed out programming for the PS3 that they cannot manage to get more power out of the Cell. However, according to Insomniac, another reputable developer, the PS3 is nowhere near maxed out at present, there are years of improvement still. MGS4 does not mark the end of graphical improvements.

I hope he considers this when making the next Zone Of The Enders. I hope he makes it "double great".

 » Hmmm

You know, I think either way this game is going to be a masterpiece. Seriously. He was limited and forced to downsize his visions multiple times and each and every game he pumped out was a complete masterpiece. I think that when this game is released and in our PS3's...We're in for a real treat :)

Well that's a shame. Even though they probably aren't using the CPU as efficiently as is made possible later on in a consoles lifetime, have a lot of respect for Kojima, and if his team can't make more use of the CPU as of now then there are probably not that many who can. Which means it's probably going to take longer to see some really outstanding games 9in this sense on PS3. And that also makes you wonder just how high it can really go. It may not be as high as anticipated.
But then again Kojima is a perfectionist. What he calls one step, many probably refer to as five.

good point there bro, perhaps better development tools and more advance engines can help in the long run
