Sony Computer Entertainment CEO and president Kaz Hirai was recently interviewed on what he thinks will happen to this generation's console war. The chief confidently said that the PlayStation 3 will eventually come out on top by outlasting the Xbox 360 and the Wii.Hirai said that even though the PS3 is still trailing its rivals in overall sales, its 10-year life cycle will ultimately result in more consoles sold and more business generated for its game development partners. He also drew comparisons to the last two game generations to drill the point. "We certainly don't do the consumer the disservice of basically saying that the consoles have gone by the wayside because we have a new one," he commented. "Right now, a prime example? PS2 is nine years into it. Where's the Xbox? Where's the GameCube?" "Same thing with the original PlayStation. At some point we looked around and asked what happened to the Saturn? Where's the N64?" He likened the seventh-generation console wars to a marathon, and not a sprint. He also said that the real measure of a console's success when it's all said and done is how many sectors were able to benefit from it. He said that this should go beyond first-party partners. It has to trickle down to retailers and third-party publishers. Hirai concluded the interview by saying, "We're still only two years into the PS3, and I think the true test is really like the situation we find ourselves with PS2, where nine years later and 130 million units later we can look back and say, "Yeah - it's been a pretty successful platform." PS1 and PS2 literally annihilated the competition. It isn't the same right now though. Will it be like that again though? Perhaps.
Hell, at E3 they said there are over 130 PS2 titles in develop as I type this. Insane!

I'm pretty sure that PS2 will outlast the 360. 9 years on and a 4th generation console coming out by Christmas, it will continue to sell.

With FF13 gone and all the JRPGs coming to the x360, I feel ripped off. My ps3 will still be usefull for the exclusives, but I'll also have to buy an x360 (chipped since I don't wanna play online).

Combine PS3, PS2 and PSP sales and then match them against Wii and Ds sales, then Xbox 360 Sales.
It would probably look something like Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft.
Since the PS2 is still going strong yet the other consoles are dead Sony still has a huge advantage in sales.

really when you rationally look at the way Hirai has so politely put it, its so true. I 'm not a fanboy of any console, i appreciate all of their uniqueness and what they have to offer. ( Wii- the experience( the controller- it has more, but be real, it all revolves around the controller and i'm cool with it, so u should be too.), X-box360-Quality Service at a price, but still...(that's really broad but, 360 owners will get it), and PS3- All "arounder" ( yeah i made that word up but anyone that honestly seats back and looks at the all the features Ps3 and its potential, you'll realize that the PS3 is meant to potentially " do it all"). Sony's consoles have had long lifeline's and it's so true that u can't find a gamecube or xbox anywhere. Seriously, thinking back, i bought my ps1 a little bit after the time ps2 and gamecube had hit the shelves( xbox was coming later) and there wasn't a single n64 in sight.( which i was originally going to get, because my original n64 was stolen w/ the expansion pack and i haven't finished donkey kong 64 since, its okay because shortly after i stumbled upon a copy of ff7 and that day was the birth of a rpg fan ) and if you go to a store like bestbuy or walmart right now, your gonna find a ps2, but xbox and gamcube are no where to be seen.I can honestly see the ps3 holding up for years to come and eventually out selling both the other consoles. ( it's even built sturdy, for crying out loud) That's just the trend of sony's consoles, besides, sony has to make up all the money they've lost, then there's the slimmer PS3 that they'll come out with, and the trend will continue.

The Xbox was pretty much dead when Xbox 360 hits, heck it is basically being slowly abandoned by Microsoft leading up to the successor's launch. Gamecube lasts a tad little longer than Xbox but it is still nothing compared to the support Sony continually give to the PS2. PS2 really made a lot of money for Sony and that's why they are treasuring it for so long. Has any other consoles done this before? I highly doubt there's another PS2 from the first to the fifth generations. PS2 is one of its kind. It is still going strong after 8 years. This year is its ninth year in the market and there are still a lot of titles being developed and soon to be released for it. And I am confident that PS3 will do the same. From the looks of things, the Sony E3 conference was the most impressive out of all three. Microsoft, sure, it has all that avatar stuff and Gears 2 and Fallout 3 coming out. And the big FFXIII announcement and also a slew of hot JRPGs going for it. But I am confident that Sony will pull out a comeback very soon. With titles like Resistance 2, Killzone 2, FF Versus XIII, I don't really think Sony's future is bleak. In fact, its future should be filled with beacons of light.

The Gamecube is still around, they just call it the Wii now and new games aren't compatible with the "old" Gamecubes.
