Kaz Hirai beaming proud with PS3 - Image 1Sony certainly won't be resting on its PS3 laurels, if Kazuo Hirai were to have it his way. Not content with just beating their own PS2 monthly sales, Sony's chief exec has set their goals higher - as in 10 million sales higher than the PS2's 140 Million - for the youngest of the PlayStation family, PS3.

This number is in terms of lifetime sales, and, well, they've got nine more years to break past the glass ceiling put up by PS2. Says Hirai, "It's not fun for me replicating the PS2 numbers. I've seen that movie already." And though that movie may have been particularly good, that shouldn't stop you from aiming for a greater one, right?

Well, it's still a long way to go for Hirai and the gang seeing as how they've barely reached ten percent towards that target. Then again, it's only been a year since the PS3 came out, so we could cut them some slack.

Besides, with big exclusive titles like Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance: Fall of Man and LittleBigPlanet spurring further interest in owning the console, not to mention the obvious winner of the format wars, Blu-ray, we're looking at pretty bright years ahead for the PS3. Although canceling out the equation is the loss of exclusives, like Final Fantasy XIII.

Oh well. Again, it's too early to foretell whether or not they will meet this goal or not. But all the luck, Sony. "I want to try  and see if we can exceed the PS2 numbers after nine years, otherwise why are we in this business?"

That's indeed a record to beat. 150 Million... whew.

This is one of the reasons why we can only hope to get PlayStation2 backwards compatibility on future PlayStation3's.

Talk about corporate scams.

Man, I own all three console, that's the PS3 (and not the Wii or the X360), but the PS2, PSP and the PS3.

Man I love my PS2, because I play games that are really cool and rear to get. My PSP I use at work and if I'm travelling.
The PS3 is the beast man! This console get do anything, its pure power.

Peace out!!

 » Nice goal

But probably won't happen. The PS3 had a rough start, and that will hurt it in the long run.

I own all 3 consoles BTW, the PS3, 360, and Gamecube.

That any of the next gen consoles (maybe the Wii, but only in numbers, not great games) will be able to reach the sales the PS2 reached. The PS2 sold a lot because it had more appealing, exclusive games. However, this generation consists of mostly multi-platform games, so there's really no obvious choice in which console to buy besides personal preference. Again, I'm talking mainly about the 360 and PS3 as they're the consoles with a decent selection of games.

 » I agree

Since last generation, PS2 had all the diversity in terms of games. The other two were basically trailing behind. Whereas this generation, it's pretty much a wash. PS3 has a smaller library of games than 360, but more diversity. 360 has a greater number of titles, but less diversity (however that's changing as it is gaining RPG games from Square-Enix). Wii has games that are for everyone. So, it really comes down to what you want. Last generation, people had one clear choice, the PS2. It has all the games that appeal to everyone, be it RPG, be it shooters, be it party games. Gamecube did have Mario Party and the other classics like SSB...but that's hardly for everyone. PS2 has a little bit of everything, so it won. This time, PS3 is trying to replicate that, but it is struggling. I do hope that in the future PS3 will be able to reach 140 million sales, but that's a goal that is definitely a monumental task to reach.
