Sony - Image 1Yesterday, we shared with you gaming site 1UP's interview with Sony Studios Worldwide president Phil Harrison, and it gave a sneak preview of the company's future plans.

Harrison specifically used phrases like "a couple of exclusive announcements," "digital data," and "digital distribution" - no matter how you connect those phrases, they amount to content download.

Sony's main competitor Microsoft is offering games online, but you already know that Sony is doing the same as well. Now, what does the Xbox 360 have that the PS3 still doesn't? That's right, HD downloads for movies and TV shows, so the speculation now is that Phil Harrison was hinting at HDTV movie downloads. Even online site TV Predictions is speculating about the same thing.

After all, Sony owns movie and TV companies all over the place.

 » Um..

Movies are produced by other sections of Sony, them releasing movies for PS3, has no effect on PS3 game development.

DRM development and interface development takes away from dashboard and gaming related function development.

I think it would be a great idea to let us DL full length movies to our hdd. Trailers are great and all but i want more. Hopefully Sony somehow works a deal with major studios and networks to allow ps3 users to watch episodes of our favorite shows in Full HD like Itunes does.

Seriously, if you are just going to download your movies, what was the point of the ridiculously overpriced blu-ray drive ?

360 didn't include HD-DVD out of the box because they planned on having all their HD content downloadable, Sony should have done the same, but they are tards...

I dont want to pay $50 per year for the "privelage" of downloading movies...

Well that's good Katibah, because you don't need to pay $50 per year for the privilege of downloading movies on Xbox Live.

I agree with Shatterdome

If you decide to do HD downloads for TV then that will be fine but if you decide to do it for movies as well, that would defeat the purpose of having a Blu-Ray drive in the PS3. You would then be criticized by the press and others because they would wonder why the PS3 was so expensive if you were planning EDI for movies all along.

Think about it.

totally agreed. it would just hurt blu ray sales and throw away all the money sony has wasted with all the advertising of blu ray.

 » hmm

my guess is sony will probably release tv shows and movies that will not be released on blu-ray.

 » no way

downloading a htmovie would take days. It takes about 1 hour or more just to download a game demo.

Re: rolly poly (Unregistered) - 2007-02-16
 » really?

what kind of connection are you using? is it psn?

i have standard (in my area) 8mb down cable. xbox live game demos ~(1.25gigs) take about 20mins.

granted m$ chose 720p over 1080p for download content, most movies download fully in about an hour or so. hopefully sony keeps taking cues from XBL and let ya play the content before it's finished downloading.

here's hoping sony doesn't suggest mpeg2 for psn HD content like they do for blu-ray...

Do you all know how OLD this news is?

Sony has said that they want to (and they have directly stated this) sell HD movies off PSN (HUB/PNP at the time) a long time before MS decided to.

They were saying this back at E3, and Microsoft decided to do this back in the fall of 06.

This is just a lesson to all of you, EVERY game company steals from each other, the PS3 has the Xbox button, the Wii has the home button of the PSP, the 360 has 1080p, the PS3 and Wii have the motion sensor from Pelican (back in the late 90s), the 360 has HD downloads, the PSP had free online, which Nintendo copied, refurbished, and renamed for the DS.

Every game company steals, it's just that they try to hide it by re-naming it.

   Re: mohaas05 (Unregistered) - 2007-02-18
 » actually

just because game companies use the same idea doesn't mean its stealing. the 360 has 1080p because 1080p is a standard. It isn;t exclusively tied to one company. the ps3 and wii's motion sensors are also probably of a different technology than pelican's. and free online has been around for a long time before psp, wii, ds, or ps3 have come out.

Just because game companies use a similar idea or technology, it doesn't necessarily mean its stealing.

 » wow

unless you know a trick that i dont then that means you have to stare at that downloading screen for about 3 hrs rendering your ps3 useless.
